Dec 2017

Brett Mossman (30 Dec 2017) - [Huber Grove] - Bushtit. I did not have a camera or binoculars but birds responded to pishing. First identified by high pitch repeated chips and more rapid notes. Small gray bird with a red-brown mask and dark bill. Foraging in the pine trees across the parking area and Huber grove farm house. Exact count as birds flew from the pines to nearby cottonwoods.

Sharyn Isom (24 Aug 2017) - [Little Pole Canyon] - Common Nighthawk

Drew Meyer (21 Aug 2017) - [Jordanelle Reservoir SP] - Gray Flycatcher. Tentative ID, I will heed the opinion of the reviewer as I am a novice at Western empid ID. See photo; main points of ID were structure (I believe eliminates phoebes and WWPE). Other flycatchers eliminated by low-contrast of wing bars and primary edges, paleness of color, roundness of head shape, thin but definite eye-ring, overall low dorsal vs. ventral contrast, and tail-wagging behavior demonstrated in the field.

Jun 2017

Robert Wilson (29 Jun 2017) - [Provo River near Potter's Lane] - A friend was fishing and I chose to eBird. The water was high and I knew from previous visits that this was a great birding area. I was especially interested in recording eastern kingbird and grey catbird, both of which I had seen here before. I saw them both on this excursion. The riparian corridor has groves of large narrow-leaf cottonwood, dense thickets of coyote willow, and hawthorn thickets. There is cheat grass and some patches of invasive thistle, but it appears that weeds are being controlled. This reach of river is a mitigation area for the 1988 Jordanelle Dam. Paths are well worn by fishermen. This afternoon was clear and calm in the 70s. Birds were quite active in late afternoon and early evening. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and eBird allows my to satisfy my habits as a field biologist.

Bret Mossman (16 May 2017) - [Heber City, UT] - Nashville Warbler. At first glance I thought it was an orange crowned because of the yellow undertail. The bird was a first year female with yellow undertail coverts, white belly, a small amount of yellow in the chest and a complete white eye ring. There was much more yellow in the wings than I would expect for a Virginia's.

Jun 2014

Norm Brown (24  Jun 2014) - [Bald Mountain] - This morning, Dave Hanscom and I hiked up Bald Mountain via the East Black Forks Trailhead route in hopes of finding WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN. A chilly 39 degree morning welcomed us to the starting parking lot, but the trails held up well with a bit of sulky mud from previous rain/snow. The trail led us straight up with no interruption and once we peaked Bald Mountain the Ptarmigan search was on. After circling around for about 45 minutes I nearly stumbled onto a Ptarmigan. Blending in perfectly with the rocky hillside, the bird never lost its form. Hanging out for a five minutes behind a rock, then deciding to strut on for food, the White-tailed Ptarmigan continued up the hill feeding on the low brush at Bald Mountain.

The trail leading up to the summit is in very good condition, with only a few muddy spots, with the typical thunderstorm rolling in after 1:00 PM (which we avoided). It was a very active mountainous birding trip with multiple views of AMERICAN PIPITS, AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS (everywhere), plenty of GRAY JAYS, and lots of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, PINE SISKEN, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, CHICKADEES and HERMIT THRUSHES. We also got get great looks at TOWNSEND'S SOLITARES, HORNED LARKS, YELLOW-RUMBED WARBLERS and a lone BROWN CREEPER and PINE GROSBEAK.

Wayne Whaley (4 Jun 2914) - This morning around 11:20 we (the ornithology class) found a fledgling Northern Saw-whet Owl at Cascade Springs, Wasatch Co. It was a very cute guy sitting low on a branch by one of the paved trails. Everyone went nuts over how cute it was. And many photos were taken. It eventually flew to a higher branch and we left. MacGillivray’s Warbler was our next best bird.

May 2014

Nancy Matro (21 May 2014) - [Heber City] - I'm currently in the fields near Potters Lane north of Heber looking at two Bobolinks.

Ned Bixler (17 May 2014) - The Bobolinks are back at Potter Lane, and the Common Grackles are back at Charleston Park.

Dave Hanscom (5 May 2014) - The warblers have returned to Jordanelle.  There were several Yellow Warblers, and I heard a Common Yellowthroat in the cattails near the south end. Nice to have spring returning!

Apr 2014

Keeli Marvel (28 Apr 2014) - Yesterday I spent the afternoon hiking off trail in Main Canyon a mile or so past where Main Canyon Rd turns into dirt in Wallsburg, and picked up a small flock of Evening Grosbeaks, a Clarks's Nutcracker, and some very confiding Red-breasted Nuthatches.

Dennis Shirley (7 Apr 2014) - I spent the morning in Wasatch County. Highlights included; 118 COMMON LOON (actual count on upper reservoir only) and one HORNED GREBE on Deer Creek Reservoir, and a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCK and GREATER SCAUP on the Rock Cliff arm of Jordanelle Reservoir.

Dave Hanscom (3 Apr 2014) - It's definitely spring below the Jordanelle Dam. This week, for the first
time this year, we saw Osprey, Snipe, Kingfisher, Virginia Rail, Turkey Vulture, Coot, Killdeer, Cinnamon Teal, Sandhill Crane, and Spotted Towhee. Also lots of Red-winged Blackbirds and Song Sparrows serenading us along the way.

Feb 2014

Bryan Shirley (10 Feb 2014) - Yesterday 6 birders braved the weather and ended up with a decent day in Wasatch County & Summit County. We started out at the mouth of the Provo River in Deer Creek Reservoir. There were several hundred Canada Geese, thousands of ducks, and a few Mute and Tundra Swans. The waterfowl was being kept pretty busy by a few Bald Eagles that kept harassing them. We weren't able to find any rare ducks, but in total found 15 species or waterfowl there. The wind and rain made birding slow overall, but we made a few stops around the outskirts of town and had our 29 species for the county before long.

Jun 2013

Bryant Olsen (22 Jun 2013) - GRAY JAYS, PINE GROSBEAKS and AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS in Wasatch county up on Duchesne ridge on Monday.

Bryant Olsen
(6 Jun 2013) - I went up to my cabin in Strawberry valley and yesterday was able to re-located the PURPLE MARTINS I found nearby a few years back, in the same place 5 miles south of the marina turnoff. .... I also had a Flammulated Owl hoot at the cabin, first I've heard there in a few years, and the resident male Ruffed Grouse was doing his morning drumming. Plus Sandhill Cranes nested for the first time on the beaver pond below my cabin.

May 2013

D Hogan (20 May 2013)- [Midway] - A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK appeared at my feeders in Midway. He was with a group of Black-headed Grosbeaks that are frequent visitors. He didn't stick around long enough for photos.

Apr 2013

Dave Hanscom (25 Apr 2013) - One lone Long-billed Dowitcher was hanging out with one lone Greater Yellowlegs at Richardson Flat (just east of Park City). The water is finally starting to accumulate in that area, but much less than usual for this time of year. Still not many birds.

Dave Hanscom (28 Mar 2013) - Jordanelle is getting more birdy by the week. Lots of Song Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Green-winged Teal. Also a couple of Sandhill Cranes and a Belted Kingfisher today. Unfortunately, only the top and bottom ponds have water, and everything seems to be getting drier every time we walk there.

Feb 2013

Connie McManus (10 Feb 2013) - [Park City] - Yesterday (Sat.02/09) I had 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS visit my yard at the same time. There was a DOWNY WOODPECKER, the SHARP-SHINNED HAWK (a regular) and some REDWING BLACK BIRDS.

Jan 2013

Nate Brown (28 Jan 2013) - Wanted to report a Mute Swan (2 of them) sighting on Deer Creek Reservoir, yesterday, January 26. ...Easily viewed as you take Center/Charleston/3600 W heading south from Midway, UT ... View is to the west. The reservoir has finally melted some ice off from the northern areas, lots of waterfowl - juvenile Bald Eagles, Bufflehead, Tundra Swans, Coots, Common Mergansers, Canvasbacks, Canada Geese, Ring Necked ducks.

Dec 2012

Doc Hogan (13 Dec 2012) - I live in Midway Utah. Common Redpolls (up to 20) have been at my feeders everyday for the last 2 weeks. Looks like they're here to stay for a while.

Ned Bixler (7 Dec 2012) - I saw a single Common Redpoll at a feeder in Heber City today. It only stayed for about 15 min.

Nov 2012

Kimberly Rousch (12 Nov 2012) - Scott heard then saw a V formation of Sandhill Cranes fly over our house in Pinebrook, Park City (just east of Parley's Summit) yesterday!!

Dave Hanscom (12 Nov 2012) - I heard a flock of loud honking overhead as I looked for Tree Sparrows along River Road in Francis this morning.  (Found some.) It took a minute to sink in that I wasn't hearing geese, and when I looked up, there was a large 'V' of Sandhill Cranes heading south.  I counted 33 in the group.  The storm must have awakened them to the fact that winter is really going to happen in 2013, despite what they might have observed in 2012. .. I also found a Northern Shrike along the Mirror Lake Highway, but no Bohemian Waxwings yet.

Bryant Olsen (7 Nov 2012) - I've been at my cabin in Strawberry valley the past couple days, found some good birds. Yesterday on Strawberry reservoir I found a PACIFIC LOON just east of the "ladders", about 100 yards off shore ... Also saw my first of season NORTHERN SHRIKE and BALD EAGLE near the dam, and a few AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS in various places in the valley. New yard birds for the cabin included a PACIFIC WREN and a flyover PINE GROSBEAKS. Also had some EVENING GROSBEAKS, and the resident GREAT HORNED and NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS at the cabin too. Plus my first ever ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in the valley. On the way home I swung by Rock Cliff S.P.. and found a flock of 11 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the top of a cottonwood west of the visitor center, they are lovely birds with their rufus colors.

Oct 2012

Keeli Marvel (28 Oct 2012)- 12 Utah County Birders met yesterday morning for some birding around
Jordanelle Reservoir and Wasatch Mountain State Park. Highlights, in spite of the cold temperatures included a Tree Swallow (this late in the year?!), a Greater Yellowlegs and 11 Wilson's Snipe at the Rock Cliffs boat ramp at Jordanelle, and quite a few Common Loons and various Grebes at Jordanelle State Park. We also observed a pair of American Wigeon in the ponds at Wasatch Mountain SP.

Dave Hanscom (23 Oct 2012) - My wife and I walked through the Jordanelle Wetlands this morning and found a MERLIN in the trees near the north end of the trail. I saw one there a couple of years ago, but only that one other time.
--This afternoon I went for a run on the Deer Creek Reservoir trail which starts at Soldier Hollow. A couple of friends had told me that a pair of Great-horned Owls hung out in the big cottonwoods near the trailhead, but I hadn't been able to find them last week. Today I discovered that I needed to look on the ground, rather than up in the trees, to see them. They were sitting in the grass about 50 feet east of the trail under the big trees.

Aug 2012

Bryant Olsen ...(8-1-12) on the way home from the Uintas I saw 2 immature/non-breeding NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS at Rock Cliff nature center.

Jul 2012

Bryant Olsen (15 Jul 2012) - I had a "Green Backed" Rufous Hummingbird male at my feeder in Strawberry the other day. The truth is, Allen's are likely under reported as migrants because of their extreme similarity to Green Backed Rufous, and they should probably be on the Utah checklist, but go through un-noticed because they are virtually identical, but since Allen's have turned up as far out of range as New Jersey, Utah seems likely. So my advice is get a good look at those "Green Backed" Rufous, for one of them may eventually turn out to be an Allen's.  I took some video stills of the one I saw, and sure enough it had notched R2 tail feathers, making it a Rufous, but I still hold out hope for an Allen's.

Jun 2012

Nancy Matro (17 Jun 2012) - GSL Audubon participants enjoyed a beautiful morning birding at Jordanelle Wetlands and Potters Lane yesterday. Highights include hearing a few Soras and then actually seeing one, some Common Yellowthroats, a very cooperative American Dipper sitting on a rock (but not dipping) at Jordanelle and then seeing two Nighthawks flying over us at 11:30 in the morning and the Bobolinks at Potters Lane...

Bryant Olsen (7 Jun 2012) - I went up to my cabin near Strawberry reservoir on Monday night threw Wednsday morning, and came back via Heber and Guardsman Pass and Brighton. Good birds seen or heard include: LONG-EARDED OWL heard hooting both nights at Strawberry, plus a NORTHERN SAW-WHET heard on Tuesday night, and a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL heard and then seen on Wednesday morning. A lone male PURPLE MARTIN flying in the high winds on Tuesday near the nest colony by Hans Point at Strawberry...

David Wheeler (2 Jun 2012) - BOBOLINK on Potter Lane north of Heber.

May 2012

Paul Higgins (13 May 2012) - I spent all weekend in the Uintah Basin looking for Mountain Plover's (seems rather futile, now). On the way home I stopped to rest at Jordenelle Wetlands. This Common Yellowthroat kept me awake with it's insistent singing. I crept over, set up and he gave me some great looks. I'm always a sucker for Yellowthroats.

Ned Bixler (12 May 2012) - This morning at Potters Lane, there were several Bobolinks singing in the tree tops. Also, in the same area, there were Wilson's Snipe, on the fence posts along the road. Time was 10:30 am.

Apr 2012

Dave Hanscom (30 Apr 2012) - Spring continues to move into the high country. Today my wife and I walked the trail through the Jordanelle Wetlands, as we do every week, and were serenaded by our first Common Yellowthroat of the year. Also, two FOY Spotted Sandpipers flew down the river. Nice!

Kimberly Roush (8 Apr 2012) - The cat walk was a delight this am. As soon as I took Sundance into the back of our yard a beautiful FOX SPARROW was singing. To top that off, as I stood patiently waiting for Sundance to check out gopher holes, he started watching something move through the bushes. It was a LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

Jan 2012

Margaret Sloan (3 Jan 2012) - Yesterday, we drove through Heber, Midway, Kamas and Oakley on a "social" trip, but managed to see 8 Bald Eagles, 2 Golden Eagles and lots of Coots (Deer Creek) and Starlings.  The yak herd (OK, not birds) was a surprise!

Nov 2011

Brian Maxfield (21 Nov 2011) - I made a brief stop at the Soldier Creek Bay area of Strawberry Res. today and found a single WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (Adult male in breeding plumage). It was not far from US40 when I left and was mixed in with numerous American Coots. It was also a bit entertaining to watch the California Gulls repeatedly attempt to steal fish from Common Mergansers. The Ring-billed Gulls were a bit less aggressive but did harass the coots a few times. For those interested, Soldier Creek Bay is the last part of Strawberry Reservoir visible from US40 as you head east.

Oct 2011

Ned Bixler (14 Oct 2011) - Greater White-fronted Goose. Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Jul 2011

Bernie Sloan (8 Jul 2011) - Went fishing with my 30-year-old son today in the pond by the golf course in Wasatch State Park Near Midway. While fishing I spotted a Violet-green Swallow flying over the pond. New life bird!! We also were treated to a grand show by an Osprey fishing the pond.

Bryant Olsen (6 Jul 20011) - Just got back from the cabin up at Strawberry Valley, and those little spitfire copper colored RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS have arrived in good numbers. I saw at least 6 different males, just in time for the summer thunderstorms. Also a couple PURPLE MARTINS and the other common breeding species there.

Ned Bixler
(3 Jul 2011) - Potter Lane, Wasatch Co. There were Bobolinks, Sandhill Cranes, Wilson's Snipes, along with other birds this mourning. Good mourning to bird this location.

Jun 2011

Joel Beyer (11 Jun 2011) - This afternoon we observed a singing Grasshopper Sparrow in Heber Valley. It was along 2400 So., about a half mile west of the intersection of 2400 So. and Highway 189 (this is halfway between Heber and Charleston, and near the west end of the airport). Numerous Bobolinks were seen where previously reported (drive west on Potters Lane, turn at first left, turn again at next right, and go a quarter mile to large grassy fields).

May 2011

Dave Hanscom (29 May 2011) - Took the slow road home through the Heber Fields and was not disappointed. One Eastern Kingbird appeared among a huge number of Westerns...

Dave Hanscom (28 May 2011) - I saw a Grasshopper Sparrow sitting a fence when I was driving around the Heber Fields.

Dave Hanscom (28 May 2011) - I headed south on the West Strawberry Road to look for the Purple Martins reported last summer by Bryant Olsen.  I could only find one in the little grove of trees about 7 miles south of Strawberry Bay... On the way home, I turned west on Potter's Lane (across from the UVU campus on US-40 north of Heber) to look for Bobolinks.  None were visible from the lane, but there were several near the next road to the south.

Hugh Gillilan (14 May 2011) - Today there was a Trumpeter Swan on the southernmost pond of the former fish hatchery south of Midway.

Dave Hanscom (12 May 2011) - My wife and I walked the trail along Deer Creek this morning, starting from the north end by Soldier Hollow. Lots of FOY birds for that area - Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Chipping Sparrows, Green-tailed Towhee, House Wren. Biggest surprise was just before we got back to the trailhead when a DUSKY GROUSE sauntered across the trail in front of us. I don't remember ever seeing one at such a low elevation. Must be waiting for the snow to melt up high.

Apr 2011

Kimberly Roush (14 April 2011) - I continue to get large numbers of Evening Grosbeaks every day
and also see them around Pinebrook, Park City.

Dave Hanscom (11 April 2011) - My wife and I hiked the trail from Soldier Hollow along the west side of Deer Creek this morning. Lots of Common loons and Osprey, as well as one lone pelican, were the highlights. At Jordanelle Dam, Western Grebes and Common Loons. Best birds were a few Avocets and Godwits near the campground, Red-breasted mergansers at the edge of the ice by the marina, and Clark's grebes.

Mar 2011

Ned Bixler (27 Mar 2011) - The Ospreys have returned to Deer Creek Reservoir.

Craig Provost (26 Mar 2011) - Skiing at Deer Valley this week, my daughter spotted a "chicken size bird" on the ground between the Birdseye and Nabob ski trails, while on the Sterling ski lift. Some skiers gathered and scared it into a tree, where it stayed for over an hour  ... We did get photos on our iPhones and my daughter got a video. It was a DUSKY GROUSE.

Kimberly Rousch (25 Mar 2011) - Just wanted to report that the Evening Grosbeaks still come every morning. I also still pass them on the trail in Pinebrook - always in the same spot.

Kimberly Roush (3 Mar 2011) - RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER arrived. Seen at trailhead on Buckboard Dr. just after/south of Buckboard Circle in Pinebrook. Also of note: we have had a small flock 4-8 EVENING GROSBEAKS at our feeder for the past month or two. Usually come once a day @ 10:30 am. They have never come regularly to our feeder in the past.

Jan 2011

David Wheeler (30 Jan 2011) - Above Wasatch Mtn State Park, above Midway: I saw two flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS  a mile or so above the little power station. The first flock was in conifers, the second in aspen. Both were noisy. Also present were CASSIN'S FINCHES and PINE SISKINS, along with tits, etc.

Dave Hanscom (30 Jan 2011) - The Homestead Resort, just south of WMSP headquarters. As I drove in their access road, I ... was pleasantly surprised to see a flock of Evening Grosbeaks in a nearby tree. There were many more all through the grounds.

Kris Purdy (29 Jan, 2011) -- A baker’s dozen of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS made an appearance briefly this afternoon at about 4:00 along the Pine Creek Nature Trail (snowshoe trail) at Wasatch Mountain State Park, Wasatch County.

Dave Hanscom (9 Jan 2011) - headed for South Fork of Provo to look for Northern Pygmy-owl. This continues to be my nemesis bird, I'm afraid, but did see Kingfisher reported yesterday and a flock of Turkeys. Also took a side trip to Wallsburg to see if the LEWIS' WOODPECKERS were in their usual spot, and indeed they were. Best sighting of the day was at the Deer Creek Marina, where there was just a bit of open water. Two HORNED GREBES were hanging out with some Common Goldeneyes.

Nov 2010

David Wheeler (15 Nov 2010) - I took Mojo out to get us both some exercise in Main Canyon by Wallsburg, Wasatch Co.  I did not encounter the Pygmy Owl mentioned before, but I did spook up Ruffed Grouse in two different spots (Mojo typically oblivious both times), saw a lovely Pacific Wren in the steep-gully portion about two miles above the end of paved road, and then saw two Lewis's Woodpeckers by farm houses in different areas within about a half mile of the end of pavement (but on the paved side).  Overall, not very birdy in the cold, but some nice species.  Other birds included a Golden Eagle and a Towsend's Solitaire.

Eric Huish (11 Nov 2010) - KC Childs and I birded the North end of Deer Creek Reservoir, the Wallsberg area and Main Canyon today in Wasatch County. In Main Canyon we saw a Northern Pygmy-Owl about 1 1/2 miles up the canyon from where the pavement ended. We were walking up the road in a light snow flurry when the owl flew down the road and landed on a branch directly above me, about 20 feet up. ...Right after the snow flurry stopped we were looking at the Northern Pygmy-Owl through the bins when we noticed a kettle of Buteos soaring in the background. We watched the sky for the next 30 minutes and saw a lot of migrating raptors heading south. 31 raptors in all, mostly Red-tails and Bald Eagles. The canyon was otherwise birdless except for a few Steller's Jays and some soaring Ravens. We were in the canyon from 12:40 pm to 2:00 pm. Main Canyon is Southeast of Wallsberg at the end of Main Canyon Road.  ... On our way to Main Canyon we saw 4 Lewis's Woodpecker along Main Canyon Road east of Wallsberg.

Eric Huish
(6 Nov 2010) - Ned Bixler, Oliver Hanson and I birded Strawberry this morning hoping to find rare winter water birds.  There were lots and lots of fishermen and boats, no rare scoters or loons, just Common Loons, many coots, many California Gulls and the expected waterfowl.  Most of the water birds were far out in the middle of the reservoir.   We heard Evening Grosbeaks flying over in the early morning fog but never got to see them.  They were along the road to the dam on the far East side of the reservoir.  There was a Bald Eagle, a Golden Eagle and a few Clark's Nutcrackers along the Strawberry River below the dam.  We also saw a herd of Elk, one bull and 20 cows. Strawberry Reservoir is in Wasatch County along hwy 40 Southeast of Heber.

Cindy Sommerfeld (6 Nov 20910) - Steve and I  relocated the Red-necked Grebe at Jordanelle Reservoir It was at the same place as originally reported.  It was diving a lot.

Oct 2010

Eric Huish (23 Oct 2010) - I birded Deer Creek and Jordanelle Reservoirs this morning with KC Childs, Jeff Cooper and Eric Peterson.  Best bird was a Red-necked Grebe at Jordanelle State Park. Some of the other birds seen at Jordanelle were one Ruddy Duck, one Common Loon, Common Mergansers, many Eared Grebes with possible Horned Grebes (distant and in the rain), plus more expected stuff.

Bryant Olsen
(7 Oct 2010) - On Monday I went to my cabin near Strawberry res., and had 2 NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS in the woods behind the cabin. I had started mimicking a Pygmy Owls song to get the chickadees and nuthatches to come in closer, but instead I had the N. Pygmy Owls respond and eventually one of them came in very close, less than 5 feet from me. They stuck around calling all evening until dark, but were gone the next day, or at least not responding to my imitations.

Eric Huish (5 Oct 2010) - For the past several years there have been a couple Mute Swans I would
occasionally see at the North End of Deer Creek Reservoir. I assume someone originally bought these as pets/livestock and they have just been roaming the area ever since. This fall there is a Trumpeter Swan with them.... The swans have been hanging out at the bottom pond of the Heber Valley Water Treatment Facility for at least a month.

Eric Huish (4 Oct 2010) - KC Childs and I ran up to Strawberry this afternoon to try to find the Sabine's Gull and Pacific Loon reported by Stephen J. Dinsmore. We were not able to find the Pacific Loon. We only saw one Common Loon on the reservoir. We did see a Sabine's Gull but it was an Adult so not the bird reported... Before heading home we drove up Bryant's Fork (south of visitors center). We found a Northern Pygmy-Owl and a Three-toed Woodpecker...

Sep 2010

Kristin Purdy (26 Sep 2010) - A light adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK was one of the species observed by multiple happy people this morning at about 11:00 from Tri-County Peak at the top of Guardsman’s Pass.

Ned Bixler (26 Sep 2010) - ROSE-BREASTED  GROSBEAK - along the road to Soldier Hollow towards Rocky Mtn. Outfitters

Jeff Bilsky (18 Sep 2010) - After parting ways with Mr. Avery and Cedar Pete, I decided it had been too many days of birding in the valley and I needed to see the mountains. Figured I'd check to see what kind of migrants I could find up there. The Jordanelle Wetlands seemed like a logical choice:  I actually found some pretty good migrants. A NASHVILLE WARBLER and a couple of CASSIN'S VIREOS. Also was able to get a glimpse of a MERLIN near the riverside before it disappeared up and over a hill.

Aug 2010

Ned Bixler (29 Aug 2010) -  [Wallsburg] (highlights from list) Wild Turkey 5 , Lewis's Woodpecker 1, Mountain Bluebird 15,  Chipping Sparrow 23...

Eric Huish (29 Aug 2010) - KC Childs and I birded Cascade Springs and Deer Creek Reservoir this morning
(Wasatch Co.). We found 3 Solitary Sandpipers at the north State Park (near where the Provo River enters the reservoir). They were in the muddy area by the fee station. There were 4 Red-necked Phalaropes at the north end of the reservoir. Nothing compared to the 40,000 I saw on the AI Causeway last week but they were Wasatch County Lifers. A Gray Flycatcher near Cascade Springs was also a county lifer.

Eric Huish (5 Aug 2010) -  KC Childs and I birded around Wasatch County this morning. Most interesting birds were unexpected waterfowl. We saw Common Goldeneye, Ring-necked Ducks, Mute Swans and few few shorebirds (Willet, Avocet, Wilson's Phalaropes, Spotted Sandpipers) at the Sewage Treatment plant West of Heber. At Wasatch Mountain  State Park we saw a Wood Duck in the pond behind the Visitor's Center. At the bridge where the river enters Deer Creek Reservoir we saw a Common Merganser...

Jul 2010

Kimberly Roush (2 July 2010) - was zooming along, binocular - less, on my trail. I halted when I heard/saw something unusual. "Why," I asked myself,  "is that tiny magpie singing like a grosbeak?"I tried to turn it into a towhee but it began to turn it's head and it became a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK!!! It was singing from several perches. It is a CLIMB up there. Moderate hiking ability will do. Bring water. It is on the Pinebrook private trail system but no one ever questions anyone. So if you want to try alone have at it.

Jun 2010

Dave Hascom (30 June 2010) - A Ruffed Grouse flushed in front of me on the Iron Canyon trail in Park City yesterday at about 9:00 am.

Jean Myerst (27 June 2010) - A 1st year RED-THROATED LOON was seen on Strawberry Reservoir off of HW40 on June 22, 2010 from Chicken Creek West area. (Sight Record)

Kris Purdy (20 June 2010) - Wasatch Audubon surveyed our trails in the Monte Cristo Range yesterday, and for thesecond time in successive years, we also found a pair of Mountain Chickadees using one box on a fir tree at about 9,000 feet in elevation.

Mark Mossing (16 June 2010) - At the east end of Pineview Reservoir where Spring Creek enters the reservoir, there is a small flooded area where about 50 Western Grebes have gathered.  I saw three pairs dance in about a 20 minute period of time.  Directions:  If you go to Huntsville, then continue north at the place where Rt 39 turns east to go up the canyon this becomes Rt 162 and shortly turns east toward the reservoir.  There is a parking area on the left about a half mile down the road with a sign saying Spring Creek.  Pull into the parking and look southwest about 100 yards or so.  It is quite a show.

Jeff Bilsky (12 Jun 2010) - I participated in the Bio Blitz this morning at Jordanelle State Park, Rock
Cliff side, west of Francis, UT. Just west of the South Pavilion, in a group of mostly aspens, I found a vireo that immediately struck me as different than the many Warbling Vireos that were around. It had a green back and a distinctive blue-gray head (wasn't able to tell the eye color on this gray, rainy day). I was able to get pretty solid looks and concluded it was a RED-EYED VIREO...

May 2010

Dave Hascom (20 May 2010) - Went looking for Bilsky's Glossy Ibis again today, but couldn't find the flock.  A Bobolink and an Eastern Kingbird made the trip worth while, however. The Bobolink was along the next road south of Potter Lane, and the Kingbird was hanging out with a couple of Westerns a bit south and west of the Bobolink.

Apr 2010

Kimberly Roush (12 April 2010) - Two Eurasian Collard-Doves are hanging out in Elk Run.

David Wheeler (3 April 2010) -  [Deer Creek Reservoir] ... was welcomed by the repeated whinny cry of a Common Loon .... There were many Red-breasted mergansers out on the reservoir... At dusk, I encountered another large group of Wild Turkeys north of Midway.

Eurasian Collared-Dove, ... Western Meadowlark House Sparrow

Dave Hanscom (3 March 2010) - [Deer Creek Reservoir] I decided to drive down to Provo to look for the RB Merganser reported by Mr. Bilsky a couple of days ago.  Along the way ... stopped at Deer Creek to check out the places where the ice has melted, and what to my wondering (wandering?) eyes should appear but a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.  ... The only open water is at the inlet, where the Provo River crosses SR-113, and the southeast corner of the reservoir where SR-113 intersects US-189.  The merganser was in the latter location ...

Jan 2010

Eric Huish (9 Jan 2010) - KC Childs and I birded Wasatch County today (Jan 9th) from about 8:30 a.m. to noon.  Highlights were - Along 222 in the Wallsberg Area we saw Wild Turkey, 6 Bald Eagles, 4 Lewis's Woodpeckers and an American Tree Sparrow plus the usuals.
We scoped through very distant waterfowl from an overlook on highway 32 high above the Jordanelle Dam . There was a probable Cackling Goose with a large group of Canadas and a few Hooded Mergansers on the far side of the reservoir. Barely identifiable...

Nov 2009

Dave Hanscom (16 Nov 2009) - Thanks to last week's heads up from Betsy up at Bear River, I looked more carefully at the sparrows when my wife and I walked the trail through the Jordanelle Wetlands this morning. Sure enough, there were a few American Tree Sparrows among the Song Sparrows.

Sep 2009

Tim Avery (20 Sep 2009) - This morning there were 2 juvenile Sabine's Gulls foraging off shore from Renegade Marina on the south end of Strawberry Reservoir. Renegade Marina is 14 miles from Highway 40 and the Fish Hatchery on the northwest corner of the lake.

Jun 2009

Bryant Olsen (22 Jun 2009) - The PURPLE MARTINS I found last summer in the Strawberry Valley have returned as of yesterday... Other good birds in the valley were CASPIAN TERNS, WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, a female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD that came to my feeder, and a GRAY CATBIRD in Daniels Canyon.

Mar 2009

Wendy (18 Mar 2009) - just happened to glance out the window to the feeders at the visitor center at Wasatch Mountain State Park (Midway) and low and behold, there were three White-winged Crossbills, two females, one male. That was a first for me and for the park, I believe.

Dec 2008

Edson Leite (28 Dec 2008) - I did the Heber valley CBC and got a White-throated Sparrow at the wasatch state park bellow soldier hollow past the trail head near the dumpster.

Oct 2008

Jeff Bilsky (8 Oct 2008) - Hiked through Jordanelle this evening. Highlights include:... - Cassin's Vireo...

Sep 2008

Tim Avery (25 Sep 2008) - Yesterday I spent most of the day hiking and birding in the Center Creek area above Heber in Wasatch County. ...Near Bald Knoll a small group of American Three-toed Woodpeckers were making a racket. One male bird spent nearly 45 minutes tapping away on a dead snag, and could be heard from close to a mile away. Of interest several GRAY JAY were seen flying in the same area and calling. And interestingly there were large mixed flocks of songbirds, moving through the forest feeding together. The bulk of the composition was of Pine Siskin and Dark-eyed Junco, but Nuthatches, Chicakadees, Chipping Sparrow, Robins, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and jays were all in tow. PINE GROSBEAK, Red Crossbill, and Cassin's Finch were picked out among the masses.

Jun 2008

Bryant Olsen (25 Jun 2008) - I just got back from a trip to the family cabin in the Strawberry Valley were I found a colony of Purple Martins! They were in an Aspen grove about 7 miles south of the marina on the east side of the road. When I first saw them I thought " those are some very big Starlings" then it hit me what they where so I turned around and got some photos.

May 2008

Edson Leite (20 May 2008) - I figured that since most birds migrate during the night I still had a shot at the Yellow-billed Loon today. Beth and I once again arrived at Jordanelle Reservoir at 8pm. The wind was howling and the rain was starting to come down. We went to the marina because I didn't think we would have a lot of time to hike down. After scanning the NE part of the reservoir for about 15 mins. I spotted a loon near the NE shore it was working its way west. As soon as I got the scope on the bird it flew off. It flew right over us about 30ft above our heads. We had good looks at the bill. Then the bird headed East looked like it was going to land close to us in the water. But It turned north and gained a lot of altitude we lost sight of it going north over the mountains. That was around 8:20 p.m.   Thanks to all for their postings and great directions.

Milt Moody (20 May 2008) - Kris Purdy just called to report that the Yellow-billed Loon is still being seen near the east shore of the Jordanelle Reservoir this morning (20 Mar around 10 AM). She said that there is a road near mile 6.1 on old highway 248 going toward Kamas that will get you fairly close to where you can see the bird, but that you'd have to walk a little ways to to the shore to be able to see it.  Others that have seen the bird this morning are Pat Jividen, Alton Thygerson and several others in Kris's group.

Jack Binch (20 May 2008) - Lots of thanks here. Thanks to Marci Welch for finding a great bird [Yellow-billed Loon], even if by accident, thanks to Milt for getting out a quick post, and thanks to Pomera for telling me where to look.   - I watched the bird for an hour after phoning Huntington to get up there. I was joined by Steve and Cindy Sommerfeld, Colby Neuman, and Bob Huntington. I talked to Dave Hanscom when leaving and he had seen it from the other shore. Ned Bixler also saw the bird. Neat to see one in breeding plumage.

Pomera (19 May 2008) - As of 3:30 today (Monday), the Yellow-billed Loon was still at Jordanelle Reservoir in the same general area as originally reported by Marci Welch.  I walked down to the shoreline and saw the bird from the east side of the reservoir.

Milt Moody (19 May 2008) - Marci Welch sent in some pictures of a Yellow-billed Loon see saw at Jordanelle reservoir on Sunday (18 May).

Nov 2007

Kathleen Robins (5 Nov 2007) - Last week we decided to bird for a couple of days in the Uinta Basin. ...Our first stop was Strawberry Reservoir where we soon discovered the loons had arrived. They were scattered around the reservoir at several stops. Among the Common Loons that we had for comparison (size, neck pattern, head shape) was a tightly knit group of 3 Pacific Loons.

Oct 2007

Tim Avery (12 Oct 2007) - I headed up into the mountains south of Strawberry for one last time this year, hoping to finally tick off my nemesis for the year, Dusky Grouse… I spent most of Thursday. 10/11, hiking the forest between Center Canyon and French Hollow, hoping to scare one up, but after 6 miles the only grouse was a RUFFED GROUSE, that I initially heard drumming, or at least doing something similar...In the morning, a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL flew past our car as we drove up the mountain towards Center Canyon. … At the top of Center Canyon just after sunrise, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET Owl was heard tooting just over a ridge. This is the same area I photographed one last month. Around 9:30am in French Hollow I came across a female American Three-toed Woodpecker, noisily in search of food. 2 more birds were heard nearby but not seen. And in the afternoon around 5:00pm as I was sitting on a ridge between Center Canyon and French Hollow a flock of about 24 junco's came along feeding... Luckily for me I heard a warbler chip, that sounded like a Myrtle's Yellow-rumped. Sure enough, in a small aspen was the bird. But more strange, about a foot away, was a pale gray (snow-gray as I described to my dad) headed and backed junco. The bird sported two very faint white-wings bars, and a white belly. I thought "White-winged Junco", but couldn't remember where that subspecies was, or if it was a subspecies at all. ..When I finally got back to camp I flipped open my Sibley and saw the bird on p.501, a 1st year White-winged form Dark-eyed Junco. I hadn't seen this subspecies, before, and it was very surprisingly pale, which made it stand out as an odd junco.

Jul 2007

Angie (moabgirl@gmail.com) - Broad-billed hummingbird-Uintas - Observed a hummingbird with a reddish-orange, black tipped, slightly downcurved bill and a blue-green back at soapstone basin the morning of July 28th.

May 2007

Tim Avery (14 May 2007) - This morning I heard at least one American Redstart in the Jordanelle Reclamation Area along the boardwalk heading north from the parking area. The bird was initially heard singing about 60 feet off trail and out of sight. After some pishing and giving a few alert whistles the bird moved closer and I managed a few looks and snap a shot. And at the Charleston City Park were 3 Common Grackles, one of which was making all kinds of racket. 4 or 5 Eurasian Collared-Doves were also in the vicinity.

Dave Hanscom (3 May 2007) - My wife and I went for a rainy walk today on the trail along the west side of Deer Creek Reservoir. As we returned to the car, I heard a bird singing in a bush between the trail and the Heber Creeper tracks... The song was actually the familiar "Old Sam Peabody Peabody Peabody" [White-throated Sparrow] that I used to hear in New England. A second look confirmed that the bird not only had white and black stripes on its head, but also a very white throat. A nice surprise on a day when I didn't expect to see much of any bird activity.

Mar 2007

Ned Bixler (18 Mar 2007) - Todays birding in Wasatch County. The Greater Scaup was seen at the Wasatch Mountain State Park pond, in Midway.

Feb 2007

Ned Bixler (18 Feb 2007) - Deer Creek Reservoir is still 90+% frozen, however, the open spots had a large number of ducks in them.  ...Eurasiasn Collared doves... and a single White-throated Sparrow...

Nov 2006

Lu Giddings (17 Nov 2006) - I spent some time in Heber and Kamas valleys today... Three Eurasian Collared-Doves were spotted in Kamas, in the northwest part of town. I'm not sure if that is a highlight or not.

Oct 2006

Lu Giddings (21 Oct 2006) - At about 9:00 a.m. this morning, from the Kamas road overlook, I spotted a solitary loon swimming near the Jordanelle dam approximately between the second and third buoys. I believe it may have been a Red-throated Loon. It seemed significantly different from the numerous common loons I saw today. It seemed somewhat smaller than the common loons, was pale in its face well up to and above it eyes, had pale flanks easily visible as it swam, a spotted back with spots that seemed smaller than those of the common loons still molting into winter plumage, and a bill that seemed small and almost bi-colored, viewing it from a distance of about 1500 yards. The bird generally swam with its bill pointing upward but spent much of its time preening. I watched it for about 20-30 minutes and am still not entirely certain as to its
identification. If any of you have the opportunity and can confirm this bird I would appreciate it.

Aug 2006

Joel and Kathy Beyer (20 Aug 2006) - Yesterday evening, we saw a Solitary Sandpiper and at least 35 Wilson's Snipes on the mudflats at the Charleston Bridge section of Deercreek Reservoir State Park, as well as Baird's, Spotted, and Western Sandpipers.

May 2006

Jack Binch (21 May 2006) - It is nice to have a couple of predictable birds when birding time is limited. The Bobolinks are back at the Heber Fields and the American Redstart is in the usual place on the Jordanelle Wetlands.

Oct 2005

(1 Oct 2005) - Kristin Purdy reported a Juvenile Sabine's Gull along the north shore of Strawberry Reservoir. The gull was seen between Chicken Creek East fisherman's access and another fisherman's access farther to the east. Chicken Creek East is a well signed access off Hwy 40 between mile markers 41 and 42 and has a parking lot with restroom facilities. The gull was spending a lot of time along the narrow shoreline and would periodically fly along the shore one way and then the other. You might have to walk from the parking lot toward the lake in order to get a good look. The gull allowed Kristin to get quite close, so she got some good looks and was able to study the bird in detail.

Jul 2005

Eric Huish (22 Jul 2005) - Milt, Aaron and I ran up to the Jordanelle Wetlands and after a couple hours of patience we were able to spot the American Redstart.

May 2005

Lu Giddings (22 May 2005) - An American Redstart was seen early this afternoon (about 1:30 p.m.?) in the Jordanelle wetlands. It was observed in exactly the same place as last year, about 275 yards downstream from the gate and slightly upstream from the weir, in the trees east of the road. The bird sported a band on its right leg, so assumedly this may be one of the birds that nested in this area last year...

Dave Hanscom (13 May 2005) - Northern Waterthrush at Jordanelle...I saw the waterthrush this morning. My wife and I were walking along the path and heard him singing...It's at the location where people were seeing him year before last. If you
walk along the path from the north, you first cross a long boardwalk heading west toward the river. The path then goes generally south along a line of trees and swampy areas. After crossing a couple of bridges, you pass the trees, and there are a couple of large beaver ponds on the right. Just before those ponds, in the last group of trees that are growing out of the swampy area on the right, is where he was this morning at about 9:30.

Aug 2004

Julie Van Moorhem (16 Aug 2004) - Yesterday, Pomera and I went to the BOR [Jordanelle Wetlands] looking for the Gallinule. No luck, but we did see the male American Redstart.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (2 Aug 2004) - Late Sunday afternoon we observed a Red-eyed Vireo at the Jordanelle Wetlands. It was seen at the extreme north end of the boardwalk.

Jul 2004

KC Childs (27 July 2004) - I guess since I haven't seen a posting yet today I would send out that I was able to see the Purple Gallinule this morning at around 7:15 A.M. at the Jordanelle Wetlands. Thanks to those who already had seen this morning, Bryan Shirley, Alton Thygerson and Bruce Robinson who helped me locate this truly amazingly beautiful bird. It was one of the most wonderful birds I have ever been able to see in my life. I never thought I would of had the chance to see one of these. Thanks to Clay and Cliftia for reporting and finding this wonderful bird...

Eric Huish (26 July 2004) -  The Purple Gallinule Clay and Cliftia Johnson reported at the Jordanelle Wetlands was still there as of this morning (Mon July 26, 2004). Milton Moody and I saw it around 9:30 A.M. and got some good looks at it. Milt took some photos but it mostly stayed hidden in grasses. We saw it off-and-on for about a half hour. It then snuck into the weeds and we couldn't relocate it. We found it right where the Johnsons reported seeing it (Along the road just south of where the little stream goes under the road, between the lower and upper parking areas).

Clay and Cliftia Johnson (26 July 2004) - Purple Gallinule, Jordanelle Wetlands - We were driving from Vernal to Salt Lake Saturday (July 24) about 9:30 in the morning, and detoured to see what the wetlands area below Jordanelle Dam was like. We drove up to the Good Sam RV park and back to the highway, with a brief stop at the entrance that has the stone pillars and parking area. The road crosses a slough or small stream about .2 miles north of the stone pillars. We were going south (back toward the stone pillars) when we saw the bird, about 15 feet from the edge of the road, between the road and the fence, just north of the little pond or slough. It was in sight for a half minute or so, then it slunk off in the thick grass.
Our first thought was that it was a common moorhen (which we’ve been wanting to see). However, as we watched the bird, we could see the body was bluish-purple ,the back was a lovely, delicate, olive color, and the front of the face was a big, whitish blob, instead of the red portion of the big yellow-and-red beak continuing up between the eyes. We stopped back Sunday on the way home and walked through the area for a while but did not see the Purple Gallinule again, although Cliftia thought she did hear it again, in the same area. We did see quite a few other birds in this really neat wetlands area. We’ll stop there regularly from now on.

Deedee O'Brien (19 July 2004) - On our GSLAudubon field trip Saturday that focused on the wetlands below the dam, we also saw the American Redstart. Russ Norvell was our leader. He has done the bird banding there for several years. We identified this bird as a juvenile. Both adults have been banded, and this bird had no band.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (18 July 2004) - Also, in response to a question last week about the status of the male American Redstart at the Jordanelle Wetlands, it was still there this afternoon (as were the remains of the blue plastic bag marking the spot). The bird looks somewhat the worse for wear, particularly the tail, which appears much shortened. It also was no longer singing.

Carol and Nicky Davis (12 July 2004) - ...Our second strange encounter was a Grasshopper Sparrow in the Heber Valley fields. He posed for some great photos and we recorded his song, or rather songs, since occasionally he would end his tune in a little warble.

Jun 2004

Glenn B. Barlow - Alton and I went to Jordanelle last Wednesday, June 16th, in the morning, to see the American Redstart...When we visited the DWR folks who were mist netting and banding the birds they told us they had caught the American Redstart earlier in the morning and found that it had a band that was dated 1999. They told us they had caught it every year since then, including this year. My, quite a long-lived bird--probably a lucky one too...

utecoot (19 June 2004) - Wasatch Audubon visited the Jordanelle Reservoir today and sighted the male American Redstart at the place below the dam previously reported. We also spotted a nest with at least two young. There was no sign of a female. The male was keeping busy chasing off Yellow Warblers and such and, apparently, feeding the young.

May 2004

Terry & Bonnie Liddell (31 May 2004) - I took my family to Strawberry Reservoir on Monday and saw .... a Williamson's Sapsucker (black back, red chin, yellow belly, no other red on its head) near Strawberry Ridge....

Lu Giddings (27 Mat 2004) - The bird gods were doubly kind today. An American Redstart was observed in the trees along the dirt road that parallels the river below Jordanelle dam at 1:10 p.m. I watched the beautiful wee bird for nearly 40 minutes. It spent the majority of its time in the trees between the wetlands and the river, about 270 yards below the dirt road's gate and 60 yards above the rock dam (spillway? falls?) on the river.

Apr 2004

Bob Huntington and Bob MacDougall (25 April 2004) - ...found a Northern Waterthrush at the mitigation area below the dam...[BOR at Jordanelle]. If you line up the red and white RV sign on the hillside with the dead tree just east of the boardwalk and look west you'll see the area where we located it. Also, we saw our first Yellow Warbler of the season.

Jan 2004

Ed (29 Jan 2004) - I went up to Deer Creek again today after the Eurasian Wigeon. He finally showed up around 12:15 pm it was a little higher up stream with other wigeons and it was flushed down to the reservoir by a harrier...

KC Childs (29 Jan 2004) - I ran up to Wasatch County this morning....At the Heber Valley Waste Water Treatment Plant there was a Harris's Sparrow. The Heber Valley Waster Water Treatment Plant is located just off of 100 south in Heber or Main Street in Midway. ( the road that connects the cities ) If you turn south on the east side of the Provo River crossing you will see the Heber Treatment Plant back about 100 yards off the road. The Harris's Sparrow was on the right side of the road under a group of trees located next to the road with what looks like sunflower seeds underneath it. The clump of trees is right before the gates to the treatment plant. It would come into feed on the seeds that someone must have scattered there...

Dennis Shirley (28 Jan 2004) - Add one more Eurasian Wigion record for the state this winter. There's a drake mixed in with the American's in the open water at the upper end of Deer Creek Reservoir. It was there at 4:00pm on tuesday, Jan. 27,2004. I believe this makes four that have been noted since the first of the year. Every year is sure different, isn't it!!

Lauri Hanauska-Brown (15 Jan 2004) - We have located a number of our collared Trumpeter Swan cygnets in the area of Jordanelle Dam near Heber City. One swan was actually dead in the Provo River just below the dam. This area is a bit out of our typical survey area so any observations of yellow or green collared swans around Heber would be greatly appreciated.

Oct 2003

Milton Moody (27 Oct 2003) - On the Saturday Field Trip we saw several very nice birds... At Deer Creek Rec. we didn't find the Sabine's Gull, but we did see a Northern Goshawk along the shore eating a fish with feathers, apparently -- some people saw a fish and some saw feathers flying.

Tuula Rose - On Sunday 10.19.03 10 am, on the way to Jordanelle wetlands through Provo canyon, Milton and I stopped at the north end of Deer Creek Reservoir and found a small gull amongst a couple of dozen ring-billed.  It appeared to be a First Year Sabine's Gull with brownish wings and mantle, a dark crescent behind the eye and dark primaries extending well beyond the tail. It was foraging in shallow water in "phalarope fashion", and flew just once for a short distance. Luckily Milt had it in the scope at that moment and he could see the wing pattern.

Aug 2003

LaNita Larsen and Amy Owen - Saturday, August 23rd at Cascade Springs, we encountered a Williamson's Sapsucker in the riparian area at the first turn at the bottom of the trail to the springs.

Julie (18 Aug 2003) - Pomera Fronce, Kent Lewis and I went to the BOR area below the  Jordanelle Dam to look for the Red-eyed Vireo reported by the Beyers.  Alton  Thygerson was there ahead of us.  We finally found it at the south end of the 2nd boardwalk (a little beyond the Beyers site)--there's a large, tall berry bush on the right side of the trail as you come off the boardwalk.  It was with a group of Warbling Vireos.  We had to hunt for a long time before we found it.

Joel Beyer (17 Aug 2003) - This morning Kathy and I saw a Red-eyed Vireo at the Jordanelle Wetlands (the area below Jordanelle Dam in Heber Valley). It was with many, many Warbling Vireos at the northernmost end of the boardwalk/gravel nature trail.

June 2003

Julie - (6-1-03) Made a quick trip to Heber to meet Calleen Cox at the BOR today to see the American Redstart. He was exactly where he'd been reported. He was very busily chasing off a Yellow Warbler while we were there. A Common Yellowthroat was in the marshy area to the east of the trail, singing his "wichity, whichity" song.

May 2003

Carol Gwynn - (26 MAy 2003) A male American Redstart was at the Jordanelle Wetlands area, below Jordanelle Dam at about 10:15 a.m. this morning, Monday, May 26. The bird was in approximately the same location where one was seen last year. Head down the trail with the boardwalks until you see a light-colored stake on your left, with a ribbon tied to it. The bird was seen in the dead trees right across from this marker.

Pomera Fronce - (13 May 2003) I located a Northern Waterthrush on Tuesday around 10:00 a.m. at the Jordanelle Wetlands.  Directions to this area are on the Utah Birds website.  Take the trail which starts near the buildings rather than the dirt road which goes right along the river.  Cross the green timber footbridge and continue along the trail until you cross a second and then a third section of timbers.  Walk about 100 yards past this third section and look for a stake on the left side of the trail which has PW-3 on it.  The waterthrush was in the bog on the right side of the trail right across from this stake.  In the same general area was a pair of Blue-Winged Teal.

Mar 2003

Deedee O'Brien - (Wed, 19 Feb 2003)  Just before noon today Bob Huntington, Roberta Wherritt and I finished our monthly GSL Audubon bird survey for Johnson Mill B&B in Midway, and decided to spend a half hour birding the nearby trail between the Provo River and the sewage treatment plant. At about 12:15 we spotted two 1st winter Harris's Sparrows feeding in the road/trail. They were about 30 feet away and let us watch them for at least 10 minutes...
