Message: I'm not a birder, but I saw something extraordinary Jan. 19 at
the top of Upper Quarry Road in the foothills behind the Red Butte Gardens
arboretum just south of the University of Utah. It was a cardinal. Not
sure what type. Utterly scarlet with yellow-ish beak. Didn't fly away when
I got very near it. I had no idea these birds were found in Utah, and am
rather concerned for it given that this is January (albeit a bizarrely
warm one -- that day it was 51 degrees). The bird was in some scrub oak in
the shade.
