Northern Goshawk

Saturday evening a friend phoned me. She had a hawk
with a leather tether attached to his foot hooked on
her fence (in Roy by the high school). Her husband,
using a rake, unhooked him but the hawk wouldn't fly.
I told to call the Nature Center. She did. The
Nature Center phoned the owner of the reported missing
hawk.
I quickly drove the two blocks to my friend's
house. The hawk had flown to a Russian Olive tree
next door. I had no idea what he was. I had to look
in the book. He was a Northern Goshawk. Beautiful
bird. He flew before the owner arrived. When the
owner arrived, he said the bird was pretty tame and
would come to him. He walked the neighborhood
calling his bird, but the hawk never showed. We
looked all over, but were unable to locate the bird
again.
Keep your eyes open for him. The owner doesn't
think the hawk will survive in the wild, especially
with the leather tether still attached. (The bird had
been stolen.) If you see him you can call the Nature
Center or me at 801 668-7662. pat medell
