Directions to get to where the American bitterns are hanging out are below;
but take note that waterfowl season starts Oct. 1 and that area is open to
hunting.  The following birds were seen within the survey route:

Canada geese   484

Northern shoveler   79
Northern pintail   53
Cinnamon teal   33
Green-winged teal   85
Blue-winged teal   27
Ring-necked duck   2
Redhead   13
Coots    766
Great blue heron   38

Black-crowned night heron   7
Green heron   1
American bittern   5
White-faced ibis   1

To get to the American bitterns, first stop at the kiosk and pick up a map.
The bitterns are in Leota bottom.  Go to the 3rd gate of Leota bottom.  The
bitterns are between L-5 and L-7 so you need to walk past L-6 and L-8,
cross the canal and walk down the dike between L-5 and L-7 into the low
spot.  The bitterns were on the right side in the vegetation where it was
slightly flooded.
