Causeway birds: whimbrel, ruddy turnstone - yes, curlew sandpiper - no

Dennis and Bryan Shirley and I just returned from the Antelope Island
Causeway. We arrived at about 9:30 a.m. and looked for the curlew
sandpiper until nearly 2 p.m. without success. We began by thoroughly
checking at the spot the Beyers reported seeing the bird, and then
expanded our search. Many other birders were also present, but despite
the numerous eyes looking for the bird it was without success. However,
the bird gods did not ignore us completely. A whimbrel was seen near the
weather station close to MM1 on the north side of the causeway. And a
ruddy turnstone - the same bird last seen a week ago? - was observed in
roughly the same place, also on the north side of the causeway. Bryan
walked the road from about MM 1 to MM2 without seeing the turnstone, but
it was spotted shortly thereafter, which makes me wonder if perhaps he
didn't spook it without seeing it at the time. Regarding the curlew
sandpiper, we plan on returning early in the morning. If any of you
venture out there this afternoon or this evening, if you would please
let us know how you do, even if you do not have success, your reports
would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Lu Giddings
