This morning (10/27), Kristen and I received a call from Larry Tripp who was
birding at the Red Hills Golf Course, St. George (Washington Co. UT). Larry
located a very bright Philadelphia Vireo in the mesquites and willows near
the Club House parking lot at approximately 9:45. Kristen and I made it to
the Golf Course around 10:15 and after a short search we relocated the vireo
in the thicket at the inflow into the pond. With Larry, we were able to
follow the vireo for the next half hour or so. It foraged in the
cottonwoods along the fairways/green/tees south of the pond, staying very
high in the trees. For awhile it was with a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, but
mostly it was alone.
Watch for an active vireo with bright yellow undersides (brightest on the
center of upper breast/throat), olive green upperparts, grayish head, white
eyebrow stripe, and black line through the eye.
Larry also found a White-throated Sparrow this morning in the mesquite
thicket below the parking lot.
Best Regards,
Rick Fridell
