Folks,
Partial success! Yesterday, Saturday, July 7th, took the 3 older =
grandchildren with the intent of doing Utah Lake and finding the YB =
Cuckoo, as well as Goshen Canyon and the BG and IB. We thought we would =
do the easiest first--the YB Cuckoo. Wrong! We met up with Barbara =
Watkins from the S.L. Birders (or whatever they are called), and looked =
and looked for the YB, without success. Yes, Colby, we took the path =
to the left, then went to the T, then left again, to no avail. After =
several hours we left and caravanned to Goshen Canyon. Great success! =
At first we saw Lazuli Buntings at the beginning of the canyon. Shortly =
thereafter, with a little patience and waiting, the Blue Grosbeak (male) =
popped up and was very accomodating for sometime. We also saw a Western =
Kingbird at that location.
We drove up the canyon to the "shack," and looked for the Indigo =
Bunting. As Colby suggested in his previous e-mail, we walked up the =
canyon to look at other things. We spotted a Rock Wren on the east side =
of the canyon, that flew to the large rocks on the west. We scared up a =
Great Blue Heron. We saw a Spotted Towhee and followed a flock of =
Bushtits awhile. We also saw a female Black-Headed Grosbeak. Barn =
Swallows were endemic above us (probably some others too). We then =
returned to the "shack" and much to our pleasure the Indigo Bunting =
"popped" up from some bushes behind the shack and flew to a juniper, =
where it sang to its heart's content, to defend its territory. We =
observed him for a long time, basking in the excitement of a lifer. =
What success!
BTW, I sent an e-mail to someone about the location of Goshen Canyon, =
but I didn't know the name of the street in Goshen to turn south on. It =
is Center Street. We entered the canyon about 6:15 p.m/ and saw the BG =
about 6:45. We saw the Indigo Bunting between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Birds seen included the following (in taxonomic order):
Great Blue Heron (3)
Turkey Vulture (2) (in Sandy)
Mallards (endemic at Utah Lake)
American Kestrel
Killdeer
Black-necked Stilt (No. Salt Lake)
Mourning Dove
Barn Owl (baby-couldn't locate any parents)
Non-descript small flycatcher
Western Kingbird
Black-billed Magpie
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Barn Swallow (should have looked for others)
Black-capped Chicadee
Bustit (flock)(L)
Rock Wren
American Robin
European Starling (Dare I say?)
Yellow Warbler
Western Tanager (female)
Spotted Towhee (male)
Black-headed Grosbeak (female)
Blue Grosbeak (male)(L)
Lazuli Bunting (male) (several)
Indigo Bunting (male)(L)
Red-winged Blackbird
Western Meadowlark
Brown-headed Cowbird (many, both male and female)
Bullock's Oriole
House Sparrow (Dare I say?)
Many thanks to Barbara. The grandchildren arrived back home dead-tired, =
after a stop back at Utah Lake for another short, unsuccessful search =
for the cuckoo.
Glenn
