Hello,
This afternoon there was an adult male Black Scoter at Gunlock Reservoir.
The scoter was with 7 ruddy ducks on the south end (near dam)of the
reservoir. It was in the first cove on the west side. The scoter is dark
black with a bright orange knob at the base of the bill. There also was an
adult male Greater Scaup at the other end of the reservoir in a large mixed
flock near the inflow. Also observed a Northern Pygmy along the Santa Clara
River below Gunlock Reservoir. The owl was perched in the top of a large
cottonwood, ~2.2 miles south of the dam, near the boundary of the Shivwits
Reservation.
Also this weekend was the first large movement of spring birds I have seen.
There are many gulls, DC cormorants, Am. Avocets, N. Pintails, Cinnamon
Teal, a couple Turkey Vultures, and several species of swallow (nrws, trsw,
clsw) moving through Washington County.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any additional information,
Rick
