winter raptor count. It flew to a shrub less than 10 feet from the vehicle. All
four observers got a look for nearly a minute. Bird had a pale eye with a
heavily streaked breast. Chest coloration was buffy/light brown.

a nest, high up on the cliff face (150') and under a significant overhang. A
Peregrine Falcon was flying close to the nest, making several passes, but not
making contact. The Goose was loudly repelling the intruder.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak: Male and female were foraging for sunflower
seeds. Male appeared to be immature or juvenile, female age unknown. Birds made
calls that are consistent with Rose-breasted Grosbeak calls.

416 miles over a 13-hour period last Saturday in an effort to see some Rocky
Mountain Bighorn Sheep north of Green River and to enjoy some birding in Emery
and Carbon Counties. ...A highlight for me was seeing several individuals of my
favorite hawk species, Buteo Regalis or Ferruginous Hawk, along Hwy 6 in
both Emery and Carbon County

thru Wednesday, I headed out to the San Rafael Swell in eastern Utah, and saw 2
INDIGO BUNTINGS near Black Dragon Canyon. Saw a Kingbird, either a Western
or Cassin's. Also lots of other cool desert birds around,my favorite of which
were the BLUE GROSBEAKS and YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS. Also lots of
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS that were going insane, singing day and night. Still
lots of neo-tropical migrants moving through the desert oasis.

Oliver Hansen (2 Sep 2010) - I backpacked from Fuller Bottom to the
San Rafael Bridge last Friday through Sunday this past weekend. Beautiful
weather! Birds were few and far between. Humans were even more scarce (we ran
into 2 people in 3 days). Did see quite a few gnat-catchers, warblers, swallows,
swifts, and wrens. Also a few crows (ravens maybe...they were kind of high up)
mobbing a golden eagle which didn't seem to be too bothered. There was a swallow
colony on one of the cliff faces that was pretty neat to see. It was a great
weekend. Hope to get back down to Emery County in the future.

Rick Fridell (4 Nov 2009) - Today (11/4/09) I received an email from some
Bishop, CA birders who recently spent a week or so camping in the San Rafael
Swell. On October 20, 2009, they photographed a Thick-billed Kingbird in
Upper Calf Canyon, accessed from the Buckhorn Wash Road above the San Rafael
Bridge, approximately 20 miles north of I-70, and west of Green River, Emery
County, Utah. They sent some photos and I hope to work with them to get this
significant sighting published in North American Birds and submitted to the
Utah Bird Records Committee.

Justin DeCaro (18 May 2009) - Kelle Reynolds (Forest Biologist)
and myself, Justin DeCaro (Wildlife Technician) from the US Forest Service on
the Manti-LaSal National Forest were out doing migratory bird surveys this
morning. We heard what we belived to be the song of the Chesnut-sided warbler.
A very distinctive...Plea Plea Plea Please to Meet You! We were unable to get a
visual on the bird. Kelle is originally from Chicago, and did her Master's work
in the upper woodlands of Michigan. She was very familiar with this bird, and
immediately recognized that she had heard the call somewhere before. We were
conducting our survey near Joes Valley Reservior in Emery County, Utah closeby
the Reeder Trail.

found the little park in town (the one with the missile) all aflutter with
Great-tailed grackles and Eurasian collared-doves (of which there were AT
LEAST four but probably considerably more--it was hard to tell with them being
so active, flying in and out of the surrounding neighborhoods and hiding in
trees).

Merrill Webb (7 Feb 2004) - Best bird in that general area was a Eurasian
Collared Dove in almost the middle of downtown Huntington. Makes about seven
Utah counties that bird has been observed in now, I think.

Merrill Webb - Thursday May 29, I observed a
Chestnut-sided Warbler for about a half hour from 8:15 am to 8:45 am. There
was one adult male bird in a narrowleaf poplar grove along the Muddy River about
2 miles west of the Moore Junction in Emery County. Moore Junction is 5 miles
north of Emery on Highway 10. If you want to see the chesnut-sided
warbler, you MUST GET PERMISSION FIRST!!! To get permission to get on the ranch,
