last night I went down and birded the lower provo river near the oxbow. I saw an american redstart less then 10 feet away. I was probably the same bird that Tuula Rose saw this weekend. Also I saw what I thought was a rose-breasted gosbeak, but it was deep in thick willows. Both birds were 100 to 120 feet down the left fork (see previous directions).
At Utah Lake State Park there was a good mix of shorebirds. There was a chunky peep that had a small and slightly upturned bill. It was almost entirely black. It was foraging next to a rock pile where the provo river enters the lake. I did not see it fly, but it looked very much like a black turnstone with a dark belly. Any ideas? Alex Burciaga

PS I am going back to both places this afternoon.
