New Birds for 10/15/02

Today was spent in Wayne and Garfield counties at Capital Reef N. P. and along the east side of the Boulder Mountains - State Highway 12 from Torrey to Boulder. Of note, an ACORN WOOPECKER was seen along the highway between mile post 93 and 94 just north of the town of Boulder. It was seen in a large dead ponderosa pine snag to the west of the road. The snag was the only tree in a small grassy meadow and will be easy to recognize. The tree was riddled was rows of woodpecker "cache" holes, and as Carolyn and I stopped to look it over the woodpecker was tapping food into a hole. By the looks of the tree they have been around for a while and hopefully will stay there.
Other birds seen along the route included all three species of nuthatches in good numbers, pinyon jays by the hundreds, Clark's nutcrackers, brown creepers, and a goshawk.
Good Luck!
