I'm just learning different points to access the Parkway
for my bird walks. Thursday afternoon, I went to an area new to me at 2320 South
1000 West. When I got out of my car, there was a rather good breeze
blowing--disappointing--the wind was calm when I left my house in Murray. Oh
well. I headed south along the trail. I could see lots of ducks on the water.
Probably mallards. What a surprise when I took a look through my binoculars. Not
mallards--goldeneye!
Twice I tried counting them. Best guess is 100 to 150
goldeneye--both Common and Barrows. There were also a few Northern Shovelers.
And…one female Hooded Merganser. What a day!
In spite of the wind, I saw/heard 10 more of our usual
winter species.
