Dear Red Cliffs Audubon Members and Friends:
December is again our busy month with Christmas Bird Counts, and a great
month just to get out and mingle with fellow birders and see what winter
birds are in the neighborhood. Following is our scheduled events for
December:
Saturday, December 4: Field Trip: Sand Hollow, Quail Creek, and Hurricane
Fields - Meet at the BLM interagency office at 8:00 am. Bring Scopes, if
you have them, for scanning the reservoirs, and of course your field guides
and a lunch. It should be a good time for scouting out birds before the
Christmas Bird Counts, and for finding waterfowl (Including perhaps some
Scoters that have been moving through).
Wednesday, December 8: General Meeting: Winter Bird Identification. Meet
at the Tonaquint Nature Center at 7:00 pm. Recommended especially for
those participating in the CBCs.
AREA CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS:
These are a great excuse for you to get out of the house and enjoy the
winter a bit! They provide a good opportunity to meet other birders, and
both expert and beginner birders are welcome.
December 15: Kanab - Contact Lisa Church (435) 644-4605
December 15: Pipe Spring National Monument - Contact Andrea Bornemeier
(928) 643-7105
December 15: Snake Valley (Great Basin National Park) - Contact Melissa
Renfro (775) 234-7331
December 16: Escalante - Contact Dennis Pope (435) 644-4300
December 17: Cedar City - Contact Steve Hedges (435) 586-2401(work) or
(435) 586-2401
December 18: Zion National Park - Contact Kristy Sholley (435) 772-3256
December 27: Silver Reef - Contact Marilyn Davis (435) 673-0996
December 28: St. George - Contact Keith Davis (435) 673-0996
There are plenty of counts to choose from - take your pick of as many as
you want to do, and contact the organizer so they can assign you a section
of the survey area. Christmas Bird Counts are a lot of fun, as well as an
excellent way that local birders contribute to a Scientific Study that has
lasted more than 100 years. Hope to see you out at them.
Good Birding.
Kevin
