September 27 Field Trip

Saturday was a perfect day for the field trip. We started at Quail Lake,
hoping to beat the boats, but they must have been up early. We were able to
find a fair number of birds at the north end of the reservoir, We saw a group
of Western and Clark's Grebes, including one Western Grebe that was good at
diving to avoid water skiers. A Great Blue Heron flew in close and let us take
a good look, although he must have sensed Marilyn's camera and took off just as
she came back from the car with it. We stopped by the sewer ponds on our way
to Sand Hollow Reservoir, where we added Ruddy Ducks and Northern Shovelers to
our lists. At Sand Hollow we saw a lot of American Coots, but managed to spot
a few Eared Grebes on the far shore. We also found a cute litte pink gopher
snake. In the Washington Fields we found some spotted owls in the second spot
we tried. They perched nicely for us, and let us see more than a bit of a head
peeking out of a hole. We stopped at Seegmiller Pond to have lunch, and got a
quick look at a few Green Herons. It was a great day, and we were happy to
help our new friends Leroy and Jan add a few birds to their life lists. If
they pass this way again, we hope they will join us!
