Happy Holidays,
In case anyone is planning on doing some birding in Washington County over
the holidays, here is an update of some noteworthy birds seen in the last
few days.
Both the pair of HORNED GREBES and the RED-NECKED GREBE continue at Quail
Creek Reservoir. The Horned Grebes usually can be found around the boat
ramp area at the inflow (north) end of the reservoir and the Red-necked
Grebe is almost always hanging out below the dam at the south end of the
reservoir. A scope is necessary for this bird, since it is about as far
away as possible from any of the typical viewing points.
The immature GREEN HERON continues to hang around the ponds at the Sun River
Golf Course south of Bloomington. These are usually very hard to find in the
winter. This bird is often seen skulking in the reeds along the largest
pond.
The four wintering GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE are currently at the South
Gate Golf Course clubhouse pond. They occasionally move between here and the
middle pond at Sunbrook Golf Course. Word is that a Bobcat recently
dispatched the G. White-fronted Goose that was wintering at the Green
Springs Golf Course Pond. However, an interesting hybrid duck (RINGNECK X
SCAUP) continues on the Green Springs pond. This is a funny duck that
resembles a Greater Scaup.
A single SNOW GOOSE has been in the wet meadow at the south end of the
Washington Fields since 12/9.
An immature and an adult female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER have been at Sand Hollow
Reservoir since 12/11. They are usually diving at the south end of the
reservoir.
The EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES continue to be seen around Washington City,
primarily in the evenings. Best spots seem to be on the north end of Main
Street, and at the south end of 400 East (near the pond).
And Bill, (as far as I know) there are NEVER any Magpies in Washington
County!
I hope everyone has a great holiday season, and Good luck on the Christmas
Bird Counts. Remember to post results and summaries of the local CBC's.
Rick Fridell
