Ants, not birds

I know there are many birders who are knowledgeable in other areas besides
birding.  I have a photo of a group of ants in our carport and they are in
very strange formations--like they're trying to crochet a tablecloth for
their next picnic.  If you have any ideas on what the heck they're doing,
please let me know.  The picture is here:
