Ant. Island and Farmington Bay

Antelope Island was not what we expected on Sunday. We went to find the
Long-eared Owl but it was nowhere to be seen. We did find the Virginia
Rails. We didn't see the Horned Larks or the Snow Buntings, the Barn Owls,
or any Pronghorn or Bison. We did, however, see a Northern Shrike from a
distance and a Prairie Falcon. The Least Sandpipers were at their usual
location along the causeway (six of them). We were kind of disappointed
with the island so we headed to Kaysville Ponds. At the ponds we saw lots
of Ring-neck Ducks, Green-winged Teal, Gadwall and other assorted
waterfowl.

On to Farmington Bay to see the Eagles: We were not disappointed when we
got there--they were everywhere--scores of them fighting over fish, flying
over the cars, landing in the snow--it was great! The best thing we saw all
day was a Barn Owl trying to steal a vole from a Northern Harrier.
We were treated to many many other birds there--Eared Grebe, Common
Goldeneye, Pintail, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, Common Merganser, Shoveler,
Yellowlegs, Great Blue Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, and Kestrel. We were at
Farmington Bay for two hours and could have spent the day there. Go to the
Bay for the best birdwatching of the month!
