Bear River Count

Waterbird/Raptor survey
11/25/05

Count from last Friday 11/25/05

Total ducks remain high around 400,000. The long-term average for this
week in November is about 240,000. About 17% of the total ducks counted
were divers.

The species composition was about 23% Green-wing, 19% pintail, 15% mallard,
12% Wigeon, 10% shoveler, 9% canvasback, 6% Gadwall, 3% Goldeneye and a
smattering of other species. Record high count of Avocets for this week in
November. 24% of birds observed were from the tour route and 4% from the
hunt units.

Notable birds include a late snowy egret, hooded merganser. There are
STILL about 1200 Marbled Godwits here. An important stopover site for
Marbled godwits is recognized as any area that hosts around 1700 which is
about 1% of the global population. Goes to show just how important the
Refuge as part of the Great Salt Lake, is when we host 1% or more from June
through November or 5 months out of the year!
