If you don't have lazuli buntings for the year and want to get a
boatload of these gorgeous birds, head for the hills - the foothills
above Red Butte Gardens. They were singing and flying all over the
hillside this morning, along with spotted towhees and some orioles. I
think that this area is the best place in the Salt Lake area to get
lazuli buntings during May and early June.
To access this area: Take Wakara Way east off of Foothill Blvd. to Red
Butte Gardens. There is an admission fee to the gardens, if you are
not a U. of U. student/staff member. There is a series of trails east
of the developed garden area that takes you up along the hillside. If
you like to watch other critters, there are lots of butterflies,
dragonflies, and yes, even Peter (Cottontail).
You might also be able to get buntings (for free) if you hike the
Bonneville Shoreline trail portions either north or south of Red Butte.
However, these areas are frequented by kamakase (sp?) mountain bikers
at times, so leisurely birding from the trail isn't always possible.
