At dawn yesterday there were 5 Short-eared Owls
cruising a short stretch of the tour road on the Bear River Migratory
Bird Refuge. If you take the tour route clockwise the birds were in the first 2
miles or so of the route, between the bridge and the first parking
area. They stayed along the south side of the road cruising the
cattails. They offer some good looks enabling one an opportunity
to easily differentiate between male and female.
I witnessed a female Northern Harrier steal a meal
from an adult male Short-eared Owl who had a rodent pinned to the ground with
his feet. Pretty cool.
In all I seen 7 different SEO from 6:30 a.m. to
7:30 a.m.
Other birds of note: Savannah Sparrow and Lesser
Goldfinch
