Bear River Refuge Waterbird/Raptor Count

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge
Box Elder County
Waterbird/Raptor Count
3/11/04

First flocks of tree swallows and Yellow-headed blackbirds seen.
Cormorants are already on old nests in one of the interior units.
California Gulls have arrived en masse. The majority of Rough-legged Hawks
have apparently headed north and the Bald Eagle count is way up from last
week. Total dabblers was 27,600 and total divers was 1,900. This is down
from the long-term average for this week in March of 78,600 total ducks.
About 20% of the total birds observed were within the tour loop area. The
majority of the tour loop wetland unit is still frozen. No avocets or
stilts yet, though the avocets should be here within the next 10 days.
