I haven't been back to Bear River MBR since I last reported the Tundra =
Swans on 12/13. If the water has frozen over, they will have left for =
the Central Valley in California.
Best bet is to call the MBR office in Brigham City: (435) 723-5887 (M-F =
8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) Either the receptionist or one of the biologists =
can tell you if there are any swans still out on the refuge.
I just returned from a trip to California, where I saw over 1000 swans =
near the Sacramento NWR. Also thousands of Snow Geese and hundreds of =
Greater White-Fronted Geese in the main Refuge complex.
I also visited the Stillwater NWR in Nevada on my return trip. There =
were very few birds of any sort in the Refuge itself. They must have =
suffered a drought last summer, because many of the areas were =
completely dry. There were a few swans at the nearby Greenhead Hunt =
Club, visible from the observation towers. I also spotted an American =
Bittern (very late, I think) and saw a Barn Owl catch a vole at close =
range. Alas, no pictures!

Several hundred Tundra Swans were observed to the north and west of =
the auto tour loop at Bear River MBR on Thursday afternoon.

A first winter Glaucous-winged Gull (very dark - a hybrid?) was seen =
flying near one of the outlet culverts from Unit 2 on the southern end =
of the tour loop together with a swarm of Ring-billed Gulls.

There were numerous N. Harriers hunting and a few Rough-legged Hawks =
(both color morphs).
=20
Also Sage Sparrows, American Pipits. and Green-winged Teal.

And a lone White Pelican swimming in one of the canals - probably =
injured.
