I just returned from Antelope Island Causeway I last saw the Little Gull =
between mile marker 1 and 2 on the South side. The gull is a winter =
adult. It is hard to pick out among the bonapart gulls but is slightly =
smaller with a smaller darkish capped head (though some of the bonaparts =
have a darkish cap too). The little Gull has shorter primary extensions =
that are white tipped. The dead give away (and what first drew my =
attention to the gull) is the dark, blackish underwings which is so =
striking when the bird flies. Also present in the same area is an =
apparent 1st winter Mew Gull. This gull is slightly smaller than the =
Ringed-bills present, has a soft brown wash through the head and =
neck, brown through breast and belly and dark brown wing tips. The Upper =
tail appears to be all brown with dark barring on the upper tail covert. =
Also when the bird is in flight the under wings appear to be a uniform =
light color.
The head was roundish, the eyes seem large and the bill is pinkish with =
a black tip. What I question about the gull is the length of the bill. =
The bill is thinner than the nearby Ringed-bills but seems just as long. =
The other Mew Gulls I've seen in the past had obvious shorter bills. I =
was able to get photos of both birds. Terry Sadler=20
