birding folks

Since I became involved in birding several years ago (in Texas), one of
the things that delighted me about the folks I ran into was that they
talked about birds and birding. I seldom was asked if I was married or had
kids or where I worked--let alone about my religion. It just didn't come up
and I found it refreshing from the usual social interactions.

I remember in particular birding one day at a water treatment plant with a
couple of obvious day laborers. They followed jobs around the country in a
battered car. Consequently, they had birded from Florida to Alaska and they
enjoyed it as much as the apparently well-off (judging by their vehicle)
retired couple who joined us later.

Birding can be bridge to people not like yourself.

But in the end, birding is birding.
