On Saturday, 7/7, at 9:30 a.m., my wife alerted me to a bright red bird =
in the backyard. Indeed, it was a first summer Summer Tanager. The =
bird was basically red all over with a few small patches of =
yellowish-green on belly and breast, and a few feathers that produced a =
hint of a crest, just as Sibley has pictured it. The bill was a =
yellowish-gray. It was first perched on a telephone line, then dropped =
to the ground to feed on a fallen apricot, then flew up into the apricot =
tree, then flew away. About an hour later, it returned briefly, feeding =
on a semi-ripe apricot in the tree, then flew away and hasn't been seen =
since.
The next door neighbor, who knows of my avian interest, mentioned that =
she had seen an all-red bird off and on for the past day or so.
I suspect there is no good reason for birders to jump up and come over =
to see the bird when it probably won't show up again. If need be, you =
can call me at 277-7711.
