Whimbrels, red knots, etc.

This morning, Sunday May 20, we saw 5 (yes, 5) Whimbrels on the mudflats
just north of the Antelope Island causeway entrance station. Also
present were about 200 Black-bellied Plovers and 2 Red Knots.
A Horned Grebe in breeding plumage was along the north side of the
causeway about halfway between mile markers 5 and 6.
Last Thursday morning, May 17, the mudflats north of the causeway
entrance station had about 2000 Black-bellied Plovers, at least 15-20 Red
Knots. A Bobolink was in the fields just east. Hundreds of Red-necked
Phalaropes were along the north side of the causeway. Also, Grasshopper
Sparrows were seen and heard singing within a mile of Garr Ranch, on both
sides of the road.
In regard to the Parsons' message about the Lytle Ranch Black-Hawks, we
saw both of them in the nest tree last Monday morning, May 14.
For those interested, the Vermillion Flycatcher was still present at Red
Cliffs Golf Course in St. George on May 12, a Green Heron was at
Tonaquint Park pond on May 13, and a Scott's Oriole was at Utah Hill on
the 13th.
On Wednesday May 16, a Blue-winged Teal and a Bobolink were seen at the
south end of Scipio Reservoir.
On a celebratory note, Kathy saw her 600th North American species in
Oregon last week with a great look at a pair of Great Gray Owls and their
3 nestlings. Yeah!!! Oh, and Joel saw his 600th two weeks ago with
the Curlew Sandpiper. Double yeah!!!

Good birding!
Joel and Kathy Beyer
