I went to Zion this weekend to look for the Painted Redstart. I got there
Friday around 4:00 pm and look for it until 8:00 pm with no luck. It was
very birdy and the weather was perfect, but no redstart.
I returned to the site at 8:30 am on Saturday and was thinking the game was
up at around 10:00 am. However, I was mistaken. The redstart hopped into
the Douglas Fir on the ridge about 10:00 and sang and displayed for about 15
minutes. It then flew off to the north. I stuck around for another half
hour, but did relocate the bird.
After this wonderful encounter, I headed to St. George to look for the
Vermillin Flycatchers and Anna's Hummingbird at Red Cliffs Golf Course. I
struck out. The flycatchers were apparently feeling shy and the hummingbird
was nowhere to be seen.
I then headed to Pine Park for an evening of camping and searching for
Zone-tailed Hawk, which I also missed. There was a Pygmy Owl calling at the
camp site and there were lots of birds around. But, no hawk.
Pine Park is remote, but very beautiful. We had the campground to
ourselves.
The redstart is a strking little bird and I suspect he may stick around
awhile longer.
