Donna Thorum and I went to Rockport and Heber today. On Rockport Reservoir,
there were at least 50 Common Loons. They were scattered all around towards
the dam and at the first couple of pull-outs past the dam. There was also
an Osprey nest on a platform right next to the road, just a little ways past
the dam. The two ospreys were just sitting there on the platform next to
the nest, taking in the scenery. Heber Valley must by Utah's osprey capital
right now. They were all over the place - flying, on the platform by Deer
Creek, and in the trees around the (closed) fish hatchery. The water is
high at Deer Creek right now, and you can see most of the possible ducks for
our area by scoping the reservoir from Charleston Bridge. There was a line
of loons visible, RB Mergansers, as well as the usual mix of ducks.
