California Quail

We just saw a California Quail (at least I think it was a California, and
not a Gumbel's) in the aspen trees in our back yard in Layton. That is a
first for me! It was about 7 pm.

Unfortunately, he flew away about the time I got the book open to "quails,"
so I couldn't compare the two types against him. But he was smaller and
grayer than what the Gumbel's quail look in our books, so that is why I
think it was a California. When I first looked out, I thought he was
another starling (darkish tones), until I saw the black plume on the
forehead when he lifted his head up. Then I got excited and got the
binoculars on him!
