Hoodies and Friends

Two male hooded mergansers were still at the Kaysville ponds on Monday, Feb.
5. There was a nice variety of winter waterfowl there today - hoodies,
canvasback, common goldeneye, ring-necked ducks, gadwall, wigeon, mallard,
shoveler, and pied-billed grebe. To access the ponds, take the Kaysville
exit (330) and wind back (south) towards the ponds. I had to go through a
couple of neighborhoods to find the right place. You end up on 50 West and
550 South, where a church is under construction. The ducks were in the pond
opposite the church. This is the easternmost of the ponds, and these birds
were not visible from the freeway side. The ponds can also be accessed by
taking U.S. 89 at Farmington, turning west on Shepherd Lane, and following
Shepherd until it joins the frontage road, which turns into 50 West. These
ponds are heavily visited by "fisherkids" during the warm months, but they
are pretty peaceful this time of year. Couldn't find the Lesser
Black-backed Gull at Farmington today. It must have moved back over to the
dump. Carol P.S. Forgive the teacher for possibly misspelling Shepherd
Lane. I think they might spell it differently up there.
