Grackles (Great-tailed!) and Wigeon

Sunday, January 21

Sorry y'all! We must report that the "Common" Grackles in Lehi are in
fact Great-tailed Grackles! Kay Stone of Lehi reports that they've been
in the same location around the Roller Mills since Thanksgiving.
Identifying characteristics separating them from the Common Grackle are
the disproportionately long tail, the large size ( twice the size of a
Starling), and the BROWN coloring of the SMALLER females. Juvenile
Common Grackles are also brown, however, they do not differ in size from
adults, which are slightly larger than a Robin. The Lehi birds, which we
saw today at the McDonald's, are much larger than that.

We also located the Eurasian Wigeon in the water channel on the eastern
edge of the East Bay Golf Course (best seen from the parking lot behind
the Franklin Covey building). We couldn't find the Greater White-fronted
Goose, since the flock of Canada Geese it hangs out with were far out on
the golf course and inaccessible to good viewing.
