There seems to be some interest in a birding contest for 2001. =
Currently, my plan is to propose several specific contests for the prime =
birding seasons emphasizing some parts of birding I have not yet focused =
on, such as recognizing bird songs. However, I do not plan to have a =
huge contest covering the whole year. So far, we have had a contest =
every other year, and although this is the first year of the new =
millennium, next year is the 'Olympic' year which holds some alure.

In the absence of an organized contest, here are some goals everyone =
could work for:
- - See all the gulls in the state (maybe do it each quarter or even each =
month)
- - See 100 species each quarter
- - Bird a far-away place you've not birded before (in-state, national or =
international)
- - Find rare birds and report them on the hotline
- - Volunteer for bird counts and other worthwhile birding-related events
- - Lead organized birding field trips
- - Study enough about a particular birding subject to present a meeting =
lecture
- - Hone your skills at recognizing Utah sparrows (one of my goals)
- - Work more on that book you want to write
- - Attract others to birding
- - Increase your Utah Life list by 5 more species
- - see 250-275-300 bird species in Utah this year (choose the one that's =
greater than any of your prior years)
- - Add to the UtahBirds.org web site - contribute information
- - Write and publish articles (in local newsletters and national =
publications)
- - Start listing or be more complete in your record keeping
- - Bird regularly - go often and take someone with you

In other words, strive for excellence. After all, 2001 IS the beginning =
of the new millennium and can be a new beginning for each of us.
