"Last fall and winter and even into May, 2003 I was seeing a Mandarin Duck drake at Layton City Pond. He was the only Mandarin Duck there and he was courting a female Wood Duck. She seemed quite receptive." "I lost track of him sometime last spring or summer. I haven't seen him at all in the winter of 2003-2004. I took these 3 photos of the Drake Mandarin in about Dec. 2002 or January 2003 at Layton City Pond. Someone I talked to thought that this was an escapee from either Hogle Zoo or Tracy Aviary. Last winter, on 1/4/2003, there were about 6 Mandarin Ducks at Tracy Aviary. I've attached a photo of one of those that appeared to be in eclipse plumage--at least that is what one of the attendants told me." ~ Ted Steinke |
