Utah Birds Records Committee – Report for 2025  (Preview - Final version to come)

Committee members Jeff Cooper, Max Malmquist, Keeli Marvel, Bryant Olsen, Kristin Purdy, Dennis Shirley, Mike Schijf, Mark Stackhouse and Kevin Wheeler. Non-voting members Jack Skalicky (Secretary), Milt Moody (Webmaster), Vernon White (Assistant Webmaster), Eric Huish (Archivist), Colby Neuman (eBird Liaison) and David Wheeler (new member for 2025). This 2025 report was compiled by Milt Moody and proofread and revised by  Jack Skalicky, Milt Moody, Vernon White and Esther Sumner.  Jack Skalicky has also added the special write-ups on several species of particular interest. The report summarizes 77 records, representing 48 different species, submitted in 2025. The Committee accepted 60 out of 77 (78.0%) of these records.

       Checklist and Review List Changes

One new species was sighted this year. An Olive Warbler (Sight Record #2025-44) was seen with photos on 22 Aug 2025 at Lava Point Campground, Zions National Park, in Washington County by Ken Watkins and McKay Olson, and was unanimously accepted by the committee in the 1st round. It was added to the Checklist of the Birds of Utah and to the UBRC Review List. This puts our Official Checklist with 465 species, seven "Provisional Species" are on the Auxiliary List, and the total of species accepted by the Committee and listed on our Taxonomic List is at 472.
One species was removed from the Review List this year. The Vaux's Swift had more than 20 accepted sightings in the last 10 years, and the Committee voted to remove it from the Review List. By Committee vote, twelve new species were added to the Review List with regional exceptions. The Red Knot was added with an exception for the Great Salt Lake, the Painted Redstart was added with an exception for Zion National Park and several species were added with an exception for Washington County: Inca Dove, Lesser Nighthawk, Anna's Hummingbird, Common Black-Hawk, Ladder-backed Woodpecker,
Vermilion Flycatcher, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Verdin, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher and Rufous-crowned Sparrow.

The Utah Bird Records Committee would like to thank those who submitted the documentation for their sightings of these rare birds.

SPECIES ACCOUNTS:

All species evaluated by the Committee are listed by common and scientific name using the nomenclature and taxonomic order of the American Ornithological Society Checklist of North American Birds, 7th Edition, 66th supplement. This is followed (in parentheses) by the number of Utah records accepted for this species in the last ten years and the total all-time number of official sightings for Utah.

Following
the final vote of each record that was not accepted, is a  review summary (in parentheses).  Any additional comments about individual records will be in italics after that record and comments about the species records as a whole will be in a final italicized paragraph at the end of the species section.

All photos submitted with the records can be seen through the "Photo" links  in this list and also in each individual record.  However, selected photos of particular interest or quality will be displayed on the right side of this page.
