Small loon with a slender upturned bill,pale lores,and extensive white on neck
an above waterline. Red eye,yellowish in the bill. (see photos) |

Behavior: | loafing on the water,resting preening, sometimes alert. I never saw it dive. |
Habitat: | Large pond in a freshwater marsh complex near the south shore of the great salt lake. |

When I first saw the bird in question, I thought,is that a loon?,Yes,its not a grebe,neck to short for Western/Clark's Grebe,too big for any others. So the next question was,Common? no, bill to small,Pacific,no,face to pale. But what clinched the ID for me was seeing the tiny upturned bill,very characteristic of Red-throated Loon,and unmistakable in the field |
