Dec 2017

Mel Mitts (30 Dec 2017) - [Ogden Canyon] - Ruffed Grouse.

Shaila Hood (27 Dec 2017) - [Pleasant View city, UT] - Northern Goshawk. Adult; slate topside and "hood", light grayish white underside. Overall large stocky bird with visible bulging secondaries. Presented itself on western side of scrub oak, banked NE into Ben Lomond Mtn.

Bryant Olsen
(26 Dec 2017) - [Pioneer Rd Canal & Marsh] - Blue Jay. First heard their distinctive calls, then saw it fly over the road. Bright blue Jay with white outer tail feathers and white belly, black collar.

Matthew Pendleton (22 Dec 2017) - [Harold Crane WMA] - Chestnut-collared Longspur. Pale looking longsur with a wing bar and smallish bill. Tail pattern seen very well and clearly. Compared to McCown's Longspur the tail looked black with large crescent shaped outer white patches instead of a white tail with a black lower border and dark medial stripe. Heard and seen with Laplands and Horned Larks. Tail pattern noticed best when it jumped and moved, fanning its tail. I missed the best photo opp when I couldn't find it in my camera before they flew off but I managed one poor yet diagnostic photo of it in flight.

Seen at least five times across the duration of the trip always immediately around the parking lot. Does not mix with the robins. Perches quietly without moving much in mature trees with craggy bark and large branches, including trees over hanging information kiosk roof, handicapped parking spot and others with samaras. Eats red berries from the row of trees along the west side of the parking lot. Flew twice into the brush between the information kiosk and restroom path, then returned to the parking lot berry trees. Pretty girl.

Mike Hearell (12 Dec 2017) - [Beaus Pond & Beaus Forest Green Park] - White-breasted Nuthatch. (Interior West). First heard the low, nasal, repetitive call "whi whi whi whi whi whi whi", but wasn't able to locate the source. 10 minutes later observed the bird at the feeder and then it moved high up the cottonwood tree just south of the feeder, often giving a single call note as it searched the bark.

Went out in hopes that the snow from previous eve was still present, but was gone. This made observing/photographing while they were on the ground close to impossible. Only the head was visible on occasion. Alerted to their presence by their "rattle". Seen at the very end of the road on the S side, approximately 65 yards off the road.
-- Also seen: Rough-legged Hawk, American Tree Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow,

Kristin Purdy (3 Dec 2017) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - Least Sandpiper. With the Killdeer. Very small sandpiper, short black bill with the appearance of being downturned due mostly to curve of lower mandible. Possibly first-year birds; cryptic upper parts more brown-toned than gray with black centers of wing covert feathers. White under parts from lower breast through tail. Crouching style of foraging sometimes partly out of sight in cow foot prints. When visible, dull yellow legs.

Kristen Purdy (28 Sep 2017) - [North Skyline Trail] - Northern Goshawk. Looked large after all the Sharpies/Cooper's I've seen in the last week. Brown head with pale supercilium, uniformly checkered/barred underwings and body with no black markings, white undertail coverts, barred medium tone/dark tone tail. Tail tip characteristic shape: not straight, curved or notched, but with outer retrices clearly an increment shorter than the central ones. Likely a migrant. Popped over the ridge from the north and flew past me, heading south.

Kristen Purdy (25 Sep 2017) - [North Fork County Park] - Prothonotary Warbler. Popped up out of thick hawthorne over a stream and just above eye level while I was trying to pish up a chipping Wilson's Warbler. Brilliant yellow unmarked head and throat with no tints or shades. Jet black bill and eye. Breast through shoulder and side obscured by leaf, but lower edge of folded wing (primaries) visible under leaf; slate bluish and unmarked. Didn't see back. Lower belly bright yellow and unmarked, undertail coverts pure, unmarked white with clear demarcation between yellow belly and white under tail at black legs. Sturdy tail; under tail spot pattern white almost to distal end with outer tips of folded retrices dark. Flew out of sight after about 5 seconds of observation and I couldn't re-locate the bird then or in a second, later audience.

Kristen Purdy (10 Sep 2017) - [Cutler Trail to North Skyline Ridge] - American Three-toed Woodpecker. One female drumming alone with steady taps, faster at the end of the sequence. Got my attention. Watched her for a long time excavating on a conifer until another distant ATTW began to drum. She chipped once in response, drummed, and flew in the direction of the distant drummer, stopping to drum a couple times. Duetting by both birds lasted 2-3 minutes. Drumming sequence steady taps, faster at the end. Black-and-white, somewhat messy woodpecker; white blaze down the back, white sides barred dusky. On a north-facing fir-covered slope with lots of deadfall and with apparently bark beetle-killed trees. Very surprising low elevation of 6,383 feet.

Feeding on weed seeds along the edge of the paved trail near, but not joining, a mixed flock of Lazulis, House Sparrows, Brewer's, Lincoln's, and Lesser Goldfinches. Similar size/shape/structure as nearby Lazulis, but a richer, brighter rust color. Fresh, non-breeding plumage. Obvious whitish throat with faint, narrow sub-malar, pale malar sweeping aft and below auriculars and clearly tinged grayish proceeding back to nape. Significant somewhat coarse (obvious, not fine) streaking on breast and sides. Two wing bars, buffy with rust overtones, not strong. Bluish-gray tones at scapular above median covert wing bar, base of wing flight feathers, and base of tail when the bird stretched. Watched this bird for at least 20 minutes from as close as 7 feet, with binoculars. Unwary.

Head medium gray with a fawn tint. Red eye. Breast beginning medium gray with a fawn tint, becoming lighter toward the belly and then pure white under the tail. Breast feathers fluffy. Legs: yellow. Nape: Narrow white stripe arching upward from sides of neck; arch filled in with narrow horizontal rows of iridescent green feathers. Looked scaly. Mantle, wing coverts medium gray. Remiges dusky darker gray contrasting with wing coverts. Tail: thick and sturdy; fawn to pale gray with a wide pale terminal band. Flew into a snag for 20 minutes, then dropped to a pool in the trail and drank without raising its head and neck to let the water drain down its throat. Habitat: mixed montane coniferous/deciduous, elev. 8,350 ft.

Mike Hearell (8 Jun 2017) - [Powder Mountain Ski Resort] - Purple Martin. Very large, uniformly dark swallow with forked tail that was spread as the bird banked around. Watched as bird flew approximately 15' off the ground in direct comparison with VGSW. Male. Seeing this adult male at this time of year would suggest nesting cavity nearby?

Mike Hearell (23 Apr 2017) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - Glossy Ibis. On a couple of occasions this individual would stop feeding and stretch it's legs out behind it. The view of the legs during this time were seen to be completely gray. The appearance of pink on the legs in my photo is something that wasn't observed in the field and must be an artifact. When combined with the strong GLIB features of the face, it was our thoughts that this was a pure bird.
-- [8300 W (S of 700 N), Reese, UT] - Grasshopper Sparrow. Seen distant, calling. Confirmed ID from call. Have been seen at this location previously.

Kristin Purdy (22 Apr 2017) - [Brim Trail] - Williamson's Sapsucker. One male drumming, clearly heard and seen. Also vocalized with asthmatic "Hyee, hyee, hyee"! black head with white stripe over eye wrapping to back of head and white nose strap wrapping to nape. Red throat. Black body with black wings, white shoulder blaze, solid white rump. Did not see belly. Second bird drummed and called from a distant location.

Immature bird - vertical streaking on body, white chin, short and stocky wings that were overall white-ish/buffy with dark outline and dark primaries, bulky buteo head. Bird had an adult-ish tail with two black bands present and the first ID point noted. Bird was soaring overhead along Ben Lomond Mountain foothills, fairly low so I was able to clearly see its details and face. It was slowly drifting north in its loops. No images, but I'm 100% confident in ID.

Mike Hearell (17 Feb 2017) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - Trumpeter Swan. Audible. Towards the end of the day as the swans were taking flight and heading north I heard the single "trumpeted" note mixed in with the TUSW noise. I heard the call a few times in a short time, but I'm not sure if it came from the group of ~700 swans on the ice or the ones taking flight.

Bill Hunt (13 Feb 2017) - [Riverside Trail] - Merlin (Black). Looks very much like the Pacific (black) merlin, in the first edition Sibley page 130, with a completely dark face, without a mustache. I did not see the bird fly, but I did drive around to the Kayak park parking lot to get the best photo. This bird looks very similar to the black merlin photographed along the same Riverdale Trail on Nov 1, 2013: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S15543044

Michael Lester (29 December 2016) - [West Weber] - Lapland Longspur. One with HOLA along 9100S, a little more than half way to 450N. 2nd bird (more black on chest; photos) closer to 450N. Later saw 3 birds together (photos) which may or may not have included the first 2.

Mike Hearell (17 December 2016) - [Ogden CBC NW] - Swamp Sparrow. Probable. This bird doesn't seem to be a text book fit. When comparing all field marks with other sparrow sp the SWSP seems to be all that fits. The GISS in the field was Swamp Sparrow initially, but only with further comparisons and discussion did we settle on this species.

Re-found after three hours of searching the reservoir by the "narrows". Best viewing from Windsurfer Beach. Had great looks, but only obtained less than ideal photos. Bird was delayed in its plumage transition as it still held on to about 40% of its breeding plumage.Small loon with tiny, upturned bill. Still had a good amount of red on the front of its neck. Pale flanks. Will submit sight record to UBRC.

Mike Hearell (13 November 2016) - [Divide-N Trail] - Bohemian Waxwing. First found from audible flight calls as they flew directly overhead. They circled around twice, but I was unable to get a photo before they were out of sight. Searched for a few minutes, but was unable to find them.
On the return hike found a tree with Bohemians in it, but I'm not sure if this was the same group or not as it wasn't in the same area I saw the others. I'm only reporting the number that I counted in the tree.

(7 Mar 2015) - Here are some of the notable birds found around Weber County over the last few days. NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL and BLACK ROSY-FINCH at Powder Mountain. Both of these species have been seen off and on all Winter long. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Pioneer Rd (1500 N) Marsh. This afternoon Taylor Abbott and I visited the North Access of Ogden Bay WMA where the highlights were a FOY GREATER YELLOWLEGS, approx 25 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, an early SAVANNAH SPARROW and LEAST SANDPIPER.

Kris Purdy (7 Mar 2015) - I was at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County yesterday, and saw the same old PACIFIC WREN that’s wintered there. The bird was using the blackberry vines near the south feeder. I saw him twice within about 20 minutes while I was standing on the paved path and the bird was scampering through the vines only a couple feet off the path. Today, I hiked in North Fork Park with a friend and came across a flock of 6-10 EVENING GROSBEAKS. It was like paradise in that park today. Actually, it’s like paradise in that park every day. My hiking buddy and I heard and then saw a flock of about 40 Sandhill Cranes circling over Ogden Valley.

Kris Purdy (28 Feb 2015) - [North Park] - Yesterday, I headed to North Fork Park in Weber County with my dog to get in a short walk even though snow was forecast. Snow was blanketing the place when we arrived so thickly it seemed ironic that Ogden Nordic had to end for this winter grooming the park’s ski tracks on the road. But there was life in that park. A quarter-mile from the entrance a silent group of robins roosted in a hawthorn shrub right next to the road. But they didn’t move as we closed in, and then I realized their silhouette wasn’t quite right for robins, and then their true identity as PINE GROSBEAKS struck me. Even though they’ve used the lower elevations in the park in past winters, Pine Grosbeaks at 5,700 feet of elevation is always a surprise. All the hawthorns in the park have been stripped bare of fruit recently, likely due to the persistent wind events of the last couple weeks. The grosbeaks were snipping buds as they barely moved in the section of the canopy that each bird had claimed. I decided to hold off marking the bush with flagging tape for prospective grosbeak-seekers so I wouldn’t disturb the birds, and slowly moved past them so they wouldn’t flush. I thought I’d tie one on, so to speak, on the return trip. The closest female Pine Grosbeak continued to snip off buds as I tied the flagging tape about 4 feet from her perch. We left them then and quietly swished our way back to the entrance.

Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus) Exact count from the ones we saw at one time. Most likely more in the other groups of larks behind us. At one point we were looking at a flock of solid Longspurs. There were no Horned Larks mixed in. It was amazing to see so many at one time! All birds were very local and active as they fed in the pickleweed. We had to walk about a mile out into the playa to the north to see the birds. We walked out between the last and second to last parking lot along the road.
McCown's Longspur (Rhynchophanes mccownii) Drab brown overall, plain face (white throat and malar stripes), and large pink bill. No streaking on chest. Instead it had a brownish/gray v-shaped band across the chest.
    Species seen:
--  Northern Harrier, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk (Western), Rough-legged Hawk, Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon), Northern Flicker (Red-shafted), American Kestrel, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, Horned Lark, American Pipit, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, McCOWN'S LONGSPUR, Snow Bunting, American Tree Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark

Dec 2014

Kristin Purdy (24Dec 2014) - I made my weekly trip to Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County this afternoon to fill the feeders and was able to compose a top five list of birds that are stinkers all for the same reason: They were neither visible nor audible this past Saturday so we could record them there during the Ogden Christmas Bird Count. Here goes: 5. SONG SPARROW... 4. HERMIT THRUSH... 3. PACIFIC WREN...2. WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH...1. WESTERN SCREECH-OWL...

Weston Smith (9 Dec 2014) - This afternoon I took a trip out to see if the storm brought any Horned Larks down to the playas of western Weber County...Although I wasn't able to locate any Snow Buntings I was rewarded with many Lapland Longspurs... My eBird report lists 12 Laplands and 900 Larks but, I wouldn't be surprised if there were more like 3x that many.

Weston Smith (9 Dec 2014) - [Riversale, UT] - Northern Goshawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Ring-billed Gull, Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon), Northern Flicker, American Kestrel, American Crow, European Starling, House Sparrow

Oct 2014

Bill Fennimore (30 Oct 2014) - [South Ogden Nature Park) - GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW.  Black crown with golden central stripe - two white wing bars - unstreaked breast - dark bill - believe to be juvenile birds transitioning into adults - mixed in with a large group of White-crowned Sparrows.

Spotted Towhee, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Red-winged Blackbird, House Finch,
American Goldfinch, House Sparrow

Kris Purdy (9 Oct 2014) - I dragged myself out of bed Wednesday morning at 3:00 a.m. so I could watch the total lunar eclipse that produced the renowned Blood Moon from about 3:25-4:25 a.m. ... Sometime during this process the peace was interrupted by a shockingly loud creature sounding off in my backyard neighbor’s yard through our shared thick deciduous border. The sound was something of a cascade of robust chirps and chips and not anything I had heard before. Was the vocalist one of feathers? Fur? Fangs?!? I concluded fangs, of course. ... Finally, the single chirps became a crescendo again and then culminated in the iconic “BOO-Boo-boo-boo…” bouncing ball song of the Western Screech-Owl. ... I never heard the bird again that morning, but the burst of owl music was the perfect accompaniment to the night’s events. So, it was not a creature with fangs at all. But feathers and talons was exciting enough for me.

Sep 2014

Mike Hearell (5 Sep 2014) - Billy Fenimore is reporting a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at the intersection of 29th and Monroe Blvd in Ogden. Also Cattle Egrets at 700m N 7500 W.

Aug 2014

Mike Hearell (31 Aug 2014) - American Redstart in Weber County.

Jun 2014

Mike Hearell (17 June 2014) - [WAS field trip to Willard Basin]  - I had to move the date of the trip up a couple of weeks sooner than I would have liked due to scheduling issues on my part. The result being that we missed a couple of our target birds, but we still saw some good birds and ended up with 39 species on the evening. Here is a list of the birds encountered by the 13 participants on the trip...
-- Turkey Vulture, California Gull, Flammulated Owl, Northern Pygmy-owl, Northern Saw Whet Owl, Common Poorwill, Common Nighthawk, White-throated Swift, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Red-naped Sapsucker, Western Wood Pewee, Dusky Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Black-capped Chickadee, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Mountain Bluebird, Townsend's Solitaire, American Robin, Hermit Thrush, American Kestrel, MacGillivray's Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco (Pink-sided and Gray-headed), Rock Wren, House Wren, Lazuli Bunting, Black-headed Grosbeak, Western Tanager, Steller's Jay, Clark's Nutcracker, Cassin's Finch, Pine Siskin

Kris Purdy (1 Jun 2014) - A male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was singing along the Weber River in Ogden, Weber County, near the Weber County Waste Transfer Station at about 10:00 this morning. He persistently sang “Deer-der, deer-der, deer der, der der” for 10-15 minutes before I finally saw him to put the image of the bird with the song. ... I got a full-frontal view of him, particularly the complete black head ending in a point into the bright orange breast, which continued all the way to the underside of the tail as more orange-yellowish. I also caught a side view of one orange wing bar and one white one.

May 2014

Paul Higgins (17 May 2014) - [Perception Park, South Fork, Weber Canyon] - Red-naped Sapsucker.

Mike Hearell (14 May 2014) - [West Weber County Playa] -  On Tuesday of last week I took a trip out to West Weber County Playa during a pretty decent storm to see what I could find. One of the first things I saw was a Long-billed Curlew flying with 8-9 ( what I assumed were ) juveniles. ...
--Tonight, the very first place I stopped to look at, I found no fewer than 6 Whimbrel!!

Kris Purdy (10 May 2014) - My yard in Ogden, Weber County, just hosted what I think may have been a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.

Mike Hearell (6 May 2014) - Currently 9 Semipalmated Plovers, 10 Red-necked Phalarope, Whimbrel, Blue-winged Teal, continuing Snow Goose, and many many others on West Weber Playa.

Apr 2014

Mike Hearell (30 Apr 2013) - Kris Purdy is reporting a Black Phoebe at Ft Buenaventura in Ogden.

Kristin Purdy (25 Ar 2014) - Thank goodness I’ve been home a lot lately in Ogden, Weber County, to see some great yard birding. ... Yesterday, the pair of Mourning Doves that visits my yard regularly found my water bowl on the deck rail that the robins dearly love. ...  Had the first male Broad-tailed Hummingbird of the season at my deck feeder today. ... The number of male and female Cassin’s Finches was waaaay high today; higher than I’ve seen it since the first one of spring arrived about 2 months ago. While I was sitting looking out the front window (northeast view)... I looked up past the eve to the sky in anticipation of a Turkey Vulture appearing, but instead, it was my FOY Swainson’s Hawk from the comfort of my living room. ... As I watched the Swainson’s begin to circle north of my house, another raptor appeared in my view closer, flapping constantly, and spiraling higher until it closed its wings and dove, and did this over and over again. It was a Cooper’s Hawk doing a breeding display called sky-dancing.

Mike Hearell (24 Apr 2014) - Some notable birds seen/heard in Weber this week: American Bittern, Glossy Ibis, Sage Thrasher, Least Sandpipers, Blue-winged Teal, and FOY's Forster's Tern, Virginia's Warbler, Lark Sparrow, and Common Yellowthroat. Also have large numbers of Common Loon, Long-billed Dowitcher, and 10K+ White-faced Ibis.

Wes Johnson ( 23 Apr 2014) - The Lazuli Buntings have arrived in South Weber.

Mike Hearell (11 Apr 2014) -  ... I started out by going for a drive to Pineview Reservoir with little luck. There are still good numbers of Common Loon, Red-breasted and Common Merganser, and large numbers of gulls and Western Grebe but, nothing out of the ordinary.... We then to a drive out further west where we found the best birds of the day, two Bonaparte's Gulls (hard to come by in Weber) and then while I was trying to turn a Buffleheads into a LTDU, Taylor spotted a Greater White-fronted Goose taking off with a small flock of Canada Geeese. We also saw the continuing Burrowing Owl standing outside its burrow.

Kris Purdy (11 Apr 2014) - Let me second Amber’s inclination. I just heard my first-of the season male Broad-tailed Hummingbird high on Ogden’s east bench at the Burch Creek Trailhead. I hurried home, heated a heap o’hummer hooch, and am about to set my feeders out.

Mike Hearell (5 Apr 2014) - In the last week I've seen Black-necked Stilts and good numbers of Franklin Gulls start arriving, the number of Long-billed Dowitcher have tripled and today I saw my first Cattle Egrets of the year. Can't wait to see what next week's warm spell brings in!

Mike Hearell (2 Apr 20140 - Took a drive up to Pineview Reservoir yesterday evening to see if I could find any 'lost' sea ducks. Although I struck out on that front, I did see some other decent birds. Highlights were my first county Horned Grebe, 23 Red-breasted Mergansers, 13 Common Loons and 29 Franklin's Gulls. The Horned Grebe was seen just north of the yacht club on the north arm.

Mar 2014

Mike Hearell (29 Mar 2014) -  Yesterday around noon I birded one of my favorite (and only) Weber County locations for shorebirds. My very first bird of the day was a sparrow that I thought was a mouse... After I was able to get better looks at it, I was more than pleasantly surprised as I discovered it was a HARRIS'S SPARROW! A bird that only a couple of months ago was my nemesis bird I've now seen three times this year. Other good birds were 5 FOY Black-necked Stilts, 12 Savannah Sparrows, large numbers of Avocets, Curlew, waterfowl, and one clearly lost Slate Dark-eyed Junco.

Mike Hearell (15 Mar 2014) - Currently looking at a Drake Eurasian Wigeon on 6700 W in west Weber County!

Mike Hearell (14 Mar 2014) -  I took a quick trip out to the north entrance to Ogden Bay WMA this morning for a quick look of what might be expected on tomorrow's field trip. In just under 45 minutes I had 35 species of birds with the highlights being a large group of Canvasbacks, Am Avocets, the continuing Yellowlegs and one lonesome TRUMPETER SWAN.

Feb 2014

Dave Hanscom (28 Feb 2014) - A friend and I were planning to meet in Eden to go skiing in North Fork Park in the Ogden Valley. Stopped at Powder Mountain to check out the Rosy Finches.  We found five at the feeder (which was full of seed), all Gray-crowned. Skiing at North Fork Park was uneventful, but a Lewis' Woodpecker was seen on the upper access road as we left.

Mike Hearell
(28 Feb 2014) - This evening I ran out to the North Entrance to Ogden Bay WMA to see if I could get a photo of the presumed Lesser Black-backed Gull (2nd cycle) I thought I found yesterday. While trying to take a photo of this bird the previous day, my camera notified me of the lack of a memory card in its slot. Although I wasn't able to locate this bird again, I did find an adult LBBG and a 2nd cycle Western Gull. Both of these are first Weber County records! ... Also had a 2nd county Thayer's Gull. Also had a lot of Herring Gulls, Tundra Swans, Sandhill Cranes, American White Pelicans and Bald Eagles.

Mike Hearell (23 Feb 2014) -  I took a hike through the Ogden Bay Bird Refuge at dawn this morning and saw dozens of Bald Eagles. A few of them on the ice were quite vocal. Taylor Abbott and I birded west Weber County this morning to look through the large numbers of Canada Geese that have been showing up over the last few days. First we found two of the larger subspecies of CACKLING GEESE mixed in with a small flock of Lessers on 700 N between 5900 W and 6700 W. About 30 minutes later we found a much smaller variety of Cackling Goose (minima) just south of the feedlot on 8300 W.

Jan 2014

Kris Purdy (21 Jan 2014) - [Snow Basin] - Let me tell you how stressful it was to be riding the Needles Gondola at Snowbasin Ski Resort, Weber County, today and to see BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS billowing around the trees and shrubs beneath the lift. All I could do was to note landmarks of where they were, hope they’d still be there by the time I got back to the spot on skis,...They were eating berries of mountain ash that grows verdantly on the steep, cool, east-facing lower slopes of Snowbasin. I watched and enjoyed their feeding, flights and music from about 1:30-2:00. So I spent a half-hour of my ski day with the biggest flock of Bohemian Waxwings I’ve ever seen; it was totally worth it; besides, that’s the beauty of having a season pass.

Kris Purdy (1 Jan 2014) - As I left North Fork Park in Liberty, Weber County, yesterday at about noon, I thought I’d check the “usual” location where LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS often winter: In a sparse row of cottonwoods in a field along N2250E. That’s a little loop of a subdivision near the park’s main entrance. Anyway, I came across two Lewis’s Woodpeckers out in that field...Just before I turned off the main road from the park (5950N) onto N2250E, a Steller’s Jay flew across the road from a wooded slope to the ditch on my side... out of the corner of my left eye I saw a shape swooping down the road low in the oncoming lane; it cut across the road from left to right in front of both of us, swooped so low in front of my grille that I lost sight of it for a moment, and then it careened ahead and veered into the ditch. It was a Ruffed Grouse...

Dec 2013

Mike Hearell (28 Dec 2013) - [Harold Crane WMA - Rainbow Unit Trailhead] - I've been impatiently waiting for the large flocks of Horned Larks to arrive and today a few (1700ish) finally showed. Had some Longspurs and Snow Buntings mixed in with them.

Kris Purdy (26 Dec 2013) - About 30 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES were quietly roosting in the aspen trees above the feeder at Powder Ridge Village Condominiums adjacent to Powder Mountain Ski Area in Weber County this afternoon at about 2 pm. There were three Hepburn’s race rosy-finches among the gray-crowned race birds. They also dropped to the snow under the feeder and fed there a few times.

Kris Purdy (12 Dec 1013) - What a surprise when a WINTER WREN popped out of the Red-Osier Dogwood and other stream brush in Powder Mountain Canyon, Weber County, this morning to join the loose mob of birds protesting the NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL’s presence at mile 8.2, SR-158.... In addition to the bird’s I’ve mentioned already, I also heard an American Dipper calling upstream, a Townsend’s Solitaire calling high on the canyon wall, and I saw a flicker and several magpies flying high.

Mike Hearell (10 Dec 2013) - Took a drive up to Powder Mountain today to see if the Rosy-finches are in yet...no. I saw exactly 1 Gray-crowned Rosy-finch.

Nov 2013

Kristin Purdy (26 Nov 2013) - I finally scratched an itch today and logged a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL on SR-158 in lower Powder Mountain Canyon in Weber Canyon on the way to Powder Ridge Village to check on the bird feeders. ...The owl was at mile 8.7, west side of the road, surveying across the road from about 30 feet up. This was at 10:45 a.m. I also decided to continue birding up the road past the condo complex on foot and didn’t go very far when I heard RED CROSSBILLS kip-kipping and apparently landing in nearby fir trees. ... The crossbills were singing. Not just kipping; they were singing short segments of their thin warble while I couldn’t see a one of them. Sticking with it meant also seeing Mountain Chickadees, Pine Siskins, and even an uncharacteristically silent pair of CLARK’S NUTCRACKERS also working the seeds from the fir cones.
--It was so warm on the way down the mountain that I had the window open and heard Mountain Chickadees calling about two-tenths of a mile below the condos. I stopped to see what else might be with them and heard a Red-breasted Nuthatch gip-gip-gipping right away. Then a silent, big, gray finch with white wingbars and a yellow-green head caught my eye. I thought sure I had a female White-winged Crossbill until I saw the whole thing and Whoopee! It was a PINE GROSBEAK. I also saw a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER on the big power pole at mile 5.5 (just over a half-mile north of Valley Market), and today was a two-MERLIN day; one along SR-158 north of the Port Ramp Marina, and one on a power pole in southeast Ogden.
--Ogden City Cemetery: A flock of 6-8 Golden-crowned Kinglets who seem to love the clumps of cedar trees and my pishing; they fed my ego when they finally came out of the clump and seemed to go mad for me.

Mike Hearell
(22 Nov 2013) - There are currently 2 Cackling Geese and 1 Common Goldeneye x Hooded Merganser Hybrid at pond on 2700 N & HWY 89 in Pleasant View (by Pepsi Plant).

Mike Hearell (21 Nov 2013) - Just located an adult winter plumage MEW GULL mixed in with approx 150 RBGU in west Weber County.

Mike Hearell (14 Nov 2013) - Found a GREATER SCAUP by the dam at Pineview Reservoir yesterday. She was hanging out by herself approx 200 yards east of the dam when I last saw her.

Mike Hearell (6 Nov 2013) - [Ogden Bay WMA] - TROPICAL KINGBIRD. Came across this guy at Ogden Bay WMA this evening while picking through tons of sparrows and Marsh Wrens.

Mike Hearell (2 Nov 2013) - Red-necked Grebe at Pineview Reservoir. West end approx 400 yards east of the orange buoy rope

Oct 2013

Mike Hearell (27 Oct 2013) - I found one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER this morning at Pineview Reservoir. It was swimming about 30 yards off the beach along Cemetery Point. This is only the second reported WWSC in Weber County.

Mike Hearell (20 Oct 2013) -  I took my camera with me while 'hiking' at North Fork Park this morning in hopes of being able to get photos of the Pygmy Nuthatch from yesterday. I was unable to locate the nuthatch in question and strangely most the birds from yesterday had been replaced by other species. the good thing about this was the fact I found 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. This is a new county bird for me!

Mike Hearell (19 Oct 2013) - While 'hiking' today in my orange vest I came across a flock of mixed birds being very noisy and chasing one another. Off the top of my head I had no clue what bird I had heard but started looking for the one making the call. To my surprise, a PYGMY NUTHATCH! This bird wasn't even on my hopeful list for Weber County. It was located approx 1/2 mile up the trail from North Fork Park to Ben Lomond Peak.

Sep 2013

Paul Higgins (22 Sep 2013) - I hiked around the top of the North Fork of the Ogden River (Cold Water Canyon) this morning, quite a few birds. Highlights for me were Lewis' Woodpeckers, Pine Grosbeaks and Dusky Grouse.

Pat Bausman (15 Sep 2013) - We had a Spotted Towhee in our yard this evening, also - adult male. We usually get one or two in the dead of winter; this is very early.

Mike Hearell (9 Sep 2013) - Black-crowned Night Heron while standing in a dry creek bed in a wooded area. Weber, Utah.

Kris Purdy (8 Sep 2013) - I’ve been pleased to host a hatch-year male Calliiope Hummingbird at my feeders in Ogden over the past few days. This bird’s appearance continues what’s been a fantastic fall season for hummingbirds, peaking in about the third week of August with four species in the yard, multiple Rufous trying to defend each of six feeders, and up to two Calliopes at a time at one particular feeder. My yard population seemed to leave en masse overnight on August 20 with straggling Rufous at first and now, mostly Black-chinned plus the recent Calliope appearing.

Aug 2013

Mike Hearell (19 Aug 2013) - CANYON WREN. Taylor A. and I found this guy in Taylor's (no relation) Canyon this evening. This is a Utah first for me and the first eBird report in Weber since 2006.

Kris Purdy (12 Aug 2013) - The BLUE GROSBEAK that Mike Hearell and Taylor Abbott found along the rail trail in West Weber County on Friday is the gift that keeps on giving. I visited the bird on Saturday, and then again yesterday with Jack Rensel. We found the grosbeak in the same tree where Mike and Taylor found it, although this bird has the habit of disappearing for long periods and patience is a must. Jack and I continued to bird along the rail trail south of the Blue Grosbeak’s spot and came across an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER east of the trail using the barbed-wire fence and the Russian Olives. I’ve seen the species only one other time in Weber County. Jack Binch’s recent post about another one not far away in Box Elder County on the west side of Willard Bay was perhaps a harbinger for yesterday’s sighting.

Jul 2013

Jack Binch (12 Jul 2013) - I went up to the North Arm of Pineview to see if I could find the Rose-breasted Grosbeak reported a couple of times by the Mark Stackhouse groups. Nope, but some fun birds to see. A couple of Yellow-breasted Chats, several Gray Catbirds, Yellow Warblers, Warbling Vireos, a Black-headed Grosbeak, American Goldfinches, Cedar Waxwings, a Broad-tailed Hummingbird, loads of Robins, and a very vocal Osprey.

Jeff Cooper (8 Jul 2013) -  I was out late Saturday night (without Internet access) and busy all day Sunday. Seven birders on a field trip with Mark Stackhouse Saturday located a Rose-breasted Grosbeak feeding on squaw berry bushes at the North Arm Natural Area of Pineview Reservoir in Weber County. This bird was observed in the morning.

Mike Hearell (6 Jul 2013) - In my almost 23 years of hiking, hunting and now birding Weber County I've only seen 3 Chukars. Two at once in 2003 and one last month. Today while hiking (crawling) to the overlook above Jump Off Canyon  I came across 7! One was towards the bottom of the ridge and the other 6 flushed while I was hanging from a rock by my fingernails!...

Jun 2013

Mike Hearell (30 Jun 2013)  -  Decided to go back up to Willard Basin, Weber County and do some high elevation birding yesterday. Highlights of the trip were an American Three-toed Woodpecker (a first in Weber on eBird and utahbirds.org), Williamson's Sapsucker, Common Poorwills, Red Crossbils, Mountain Goats and temps in the upper 70's!

Mike Hearell (20 Jun 2013) -  Taylor A. and I took a trip to Washington County this weekend. We had a few misses but some great birds nonetheless. Sunday started out with a pair of Vermillion flycatchers in Washington County and ended with three Flammulated Owls while birding Willard Basin in Weber County. On the way back down we also got a response from a FLAMMULATED OWL and an audible ID on a COMMON POORWILL.
--Birds seen in Willard Basin: ...Red-naped Sapsucker... Olive-sided Flycatcher...Steller's Jay, Clark's Nutcracker (stopped counting at 20),...Golden-crowned Kinglet,...Virginia's Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler,...Western Tanager, Lazuli Bunting, Pine Grosbeak, (heard), Cassin's Finch, Pine Siskin

Kris Purdy(16 Jun 2013) - Located a LEAST FLYCATCHER in Riverdale. The bird is approx 60 yards due north of the police station  in the tall cottonwoods along the Weber River. It is very, very vocal.

Bryant Olsen (11 Jun 2013) - Yesterday I headed up over Monte Cristo and to Rich County, first stop was North Fork of the Ogden River near Eden, very birdy spot, got GRAY CATBIRDS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, a WILLOW FLYCATCHER, and 1 male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, down in the willows, not up on the slope which was claimed by a Broad-tailed Hummingbird. In the fields east of Eden, I found 1 male BOBOLINK perched on an irrigation wheel. I didn't spend a lot of time there so there could have been more.

Oliver Hansen (4 Jun 2013) - Bob & Bob & I headed north on Sunday to look for a few FOY birds... First stop was the WMA at the North Arm of Pineview, where the Calliope Hummer was most cooperative. He likes to pose in the sun on top of a willow near the south end of the trail. A most spectacular bird. The area was full of singing Fox Sparrows, Gray Catbirds, Yellow Warblers, ...Next was Monte Cristo Campground, which is now almost free of snow. There were several singing Hammond's Flycatchers here and there, and a beautiful male Williamson's Sapsucker gave us a long look. ... Bonus bird was the Three-toed Woodpecker across the highway behind the old ranger cabin. Final stop was another mile north on the highway at the Curtis Creek Road turnoff on the left side. Despite a gaggle of roaring ATVs, the Purple Martins were chattering and zooming around, giving us great looks.

May 2013

Mark Thal (22 May 2013) - The Yellow-breasted Chat has been a nemesis bird of mine. I finally was able to get to the North Arm Nature Area of Pineview Reservoir last night and saw one and heard another.

Beth McKinnon (5 May 2013) - We live up by Causey Reservoir in Weber County. Yesterday and today, we saw a female SUMMER TANAGER in the willow on the other side of the creek. We also saw a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at the feeders which is 45 days earlier than usual.

Apr 2013

Mike Hearell (30 Apr 2013) - Found my first Weber Solitary Sandpiper late this evening!

Paul Higgins (27 Apr 2013) - Snowy Plovers--Willard Bay.

Brenda Kidman (27 Apr 2013) - [South Weber] - Bullock's Orioles. They are a day "late" but the boys are back in town.

Mike Hearell (22 Apr 2013) - The last 3 days there have been Long-billed Dowitchers by the many hundreds at the north entrance (7500 W) to Ogden Bay WMA. There have also been good numbers of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Marbled Godwits and all 3 Species of Egret. The Blue-winged Teal pair have been staying as well.

Mike Hearell (5 Apr 2013) - [West Haven] - Currently looking at 167 Long-billed Curlew in one field! Never seen more than 5-6 at once before. 3133 S 4700 W.

Mar 2013

Mike Hearell (25 Mar 2013) - In the afternoon I birded West Weber county where I found a lone, vocal Trumpeter Swan, 3 Franklin's Gulls and 2 FOY Long-billed Curlews.

Mike Hearell (16 Mar 2013) - A couple of Lewis's Woodpeckers today in Ogden Valley.

Kris Purdy
(12 Mar 2013) - I enjoyed a Northern Pygmy-owl this morning in Ogden Canyon, Weber County, while stuck in traffic. It turned out to be one of the best birding experiences I’ve had in a long time, and certainly the best with a pygmy-owl.

John Crawley (10 Mar 2013) - I saw about 2,000 Tundra Swans today at the Ogden 12th Street exit...then headed west, finding them between 50th and 85th West.

Mike Hearell (2 Mar 2013) - Ross's Goose, Snow Goose and Greater White-fronted Goose at 4700 W 300 N.

Feb 2013

Joel Beyer (8 Feb 2013) - We headed to Powder Mountain Ski Resort. At least 60 Rosy-Finches were at the feeder, all Gray-crowned or Hepburn's, plus one Black Rosy-Finch.

Jan 2013

Bryant Olsen (31 Jan 2013) - I found several SNOW BUNTINGS dodging the trucks with the HORNED LARKS in the spot across from the model airport on 900 N. Also mixed in with the H. Larks was 1 'HEBURNS' GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH. Nearby say saw 3 BARN OWLS and several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. All in all, not a bad day of birding considering all the snow we got today, and I only had to pull one person out a snowbank with my truck, a mother with a baby in the car seat in the back. ... As I was helping her a Roughy looked on, and a BARN OWL flew by ...

Bryant Olsen (23 Jan 2013) - I went back out to west weber today to try and re-find the odd bunting I photographed Sunday, no such luck. But I did see a LOT of SNOW BUNTINGS. Its hard to say how many are actually there as they move around so much, but probably a few dozen at least. Here are more precise directions to where they are: Go west on 12th street in Ogden, it will go over the Weber River, twice, and then curve past some frozen ponds. ... On the north side is a rusty gate which says something like "Highland Farms, No trespassing". The Snow Buntings were mixed in with the numerous H. Larks north of that gate, although at times some could be seen in the road with the larks. I also saw 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR there today.

Mike Hearell (14 Jan 2013) - Lewis's Woodpecker. Found this guy along North Fork Rd today on my way to North Fork Park. It was in a dead tree approximately 200 yards north of the 'Barn' with the very oversized L on it.

Mike Hearell (7 Jan 2013) - [West Weber] - For those of you making the trek to West Weber to look through the 100's of Horned Larks. There were quite a few at the far west end of California Ave last night. With the ponds frozen the Gulls are absent but the larks are in heavy on Sundays (no trucks). This is where I found the leucistic Horned Lark, as well as: Prairie Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, WC Sparrow, GB Heron, Am Tree Sparrow.

Susan Snider (6 Jan 2013) - Spotted RED CROSSBILLS in the shorter conifers in the southwest section of the Ogden City Cemetery this afternoon -- about 17-22 of them. Hard to say exactly how many, as they moved into and out of the trees quicker than I could count.

Mike Hearell (5 Jan 2013) - Birded Weber County today with Taylor Abbott. I had a good feeling we were in for a good day when we had a GREAT HORNED OWL in a tree within 15 minutes of leaving my house in North Ogden.

Dec 2012

Paul Higgins (31 Dec 2012) - I saw three Lapland Longspur's among the many Horned Larks on West 12th Street (900 South) Weber County, this afternoon. Too flighty, I couldn't get any images.

Pat Jividen (27 Dec 2012) - Ned Bixler and I saw Snow Buntings at about 5600 w. 1000 n. in Weber County.

Bryan Shirley (27 Dec 2012) - Can't find the plovers this morning. ...I did add Tree Sparrows to my Weber County list though, so well worth the 3 hour drive going 30 mph on I-15 this morning...

Mike Hearell (26 Dec 2012) - [Harold Crane WMA] - Mountain Plovers in Weber County.

Mike Hearell (25 Dec 2012) - [Harold S. Crane WMA] - Hiked about a half mile away from my iPad to glance through herds of Horned Larks at the south entrance to Harold S Crane WMA. It used to be called the Rainbow Unit.  ...  MERRY CHRISTMAS TOO ME!  A Christmas Day SNOW BUNTING!

ashannasm@gmail.com (26 Dec 2012) - I saw a Western Grebe on December 25, 2012 at Buess's Pond in Ogden.

Kris Purdy (24 Dec 2012) - Just had a flock of about 60 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the corner of Arapaho Drive and Arapaho Circle in Ogden, Weber County...
--It’s nary a fit day out for woman or beast, so the birdies are coming to me. I’m watching a male COMMON REDPOLL at one of my feeders in Ogden, Weber County, through the snow which the wind is driving horizontally. The House Finches are dominant at the feeder and keep driving the little guy off, but he keeps coming back or crosses the yard to another bunch of feeders. Merry Christmas to me!

Kris Purdy (23 Dec 2012) - I saw a NORTHERN GOSHAWK at North Fork Park in Weber County today; it was flying along a ridge line and wasn’t close enough to age. But I wondered if it was the young bird I’ve seen there twice in the last month.

Kris Purdy (22 Dec 2012) - A Merlin on a power pole at Beus Park in Ogden

Weston Smith (15 Dec 2012) - My Father and I found a SWAMP SPARROW on our portion of the Ogden Christmas Bird Count today. The bird was seen near the main entrance to Ogden Bay WMA, it was seen at about 8am with several White-crowned and Song Sparrows.

Susan Snyder (9 Dec 2012) -We saw a Northern Pygmy Owl sitting in a tree along the edge of State Highway 39 on the way to Monte Cristo. It was a couple of miles past Red Rock Ranch on the south side of the road.

Kris Purdy (7 Dec 2012) - Add Ogden to the list of locations where BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are showing up in the yard. I’ve had five this afternoon in a flock of Cedars that are eating in the ornamental pear trees. I also had a lone female Cassin’s Finch at the feeder this morning

Kris Purdy (6 Dec 2012) -
A friend and I relived the experience of seeing a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL along Old Snowbasin Road in Weber County today while we were walking the road; we saw one along that same road a couple weeks ago. We had passed the spot once and were heading downhill when I saw the tiny blob in an aspen right next to the road.

Mike Hearell (5 Dec 20122) - Saw two Cackling Geese today. 1520 E 1250 N, Layton.

Nov 2012

Kris Purdy (28 Nov 2012) - A Ruffed Grouse in North Fork Park. The park was relatively quiet today other than Steller’s Jays and Black-capped Chickadees. I also saw a smattering of House and Goldfinches, and heard a Brown Creeper and a Common Raven.

Kris Purdy (26 Nov 2012) - What a great day birding in Weber County’s North Fork Park in Liberty, Ogden Valley. Here’s the Reader’s Digest condensed version: BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, PINE GROSBEAKS, LEWIS’S WOODPECKER, COMMON REDPOLL, Steller’s Jays, Townsend’s Solitaires and two moose.

Kris Purdy (23 Nov 2012) - Jack Rensel and I enjoyed the COMMON REDPOLLS, Gray-crowned Rosy-finches, Northern Shrike, Steller’s Jays, Ermine and more at Powder Ridge Village Condominiums in Weber County this morning with Mike Hearell and Taylor Abbott. When Jack reviewed his images post-trip, he noticed that one of the Gray-crowned Rosy-finches was banded.

Kris Purdy (1 Nov 3012) - Hiking friends and I came across a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL along Old Snowbasin Road in Weber County this morning at about 11:00. The owl was perched atop a maple or scrub-oak at the top of an embankment about 40 feet above where we were standing on the paved road. Our chatty little group admired him and tried to take cell phone pictures, and the bird ignored us all the while. We actually left it perched there and resumed our hike.

Oct 2012

Bryant Olsen (17 Oct 2912) - Today I found a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER larder pole along the North Fork of the Ogden River in Liberty. ... where I found the Woodpecker apparently caching acorns

Sep 2012

Paul Higgins (16 Sep 2012) - [South Weber, UT] - Lincoln's Sparrow.

Jul 2012

Paul Bausman (17 Jul 2012) - Had our first Rufous Hummingbird at home in South Ogden (just west of US89) on July 14: adult male, all-rufous back, brilliant red/orange gorget. Have seen no female..

Kris Purdy (13 Jul 12012) - I haven’t seen a Lewis’s Woodpecker in northwest Ogden Valley, Weber County, in the area of the North Fork in almost two years, so I was mighty happy to see a rosy adult and a dusky juvenile this afternoon in a row of cottonwoods out in a field that has historically been both a breeding and a wintering location for them.
--Once you’ve had your fill of the woodpeckers, you can make a nice birding outing of it by continuing to North Fork Park. Continue around the 90° turn and drive through the neighborhood to the stop sign. Turn left toward North Fork Park. Take the main road into the park; I recommend you find your way to Cold Water Canyon (just follow the signs). I’d just park where you can and walk the road. It’s really just a lush mountain wooded stream rather than a canyon, utterly and delightfully alive with singing Swainson’s Thrushes, Fox Sparrows, Cordilleran Flycatchers, Warbling Vireos, Dusky Flycatchers, MacGillivray’s and Yellow Warblers, American Robins, Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches. And this was between 3 and 5 pm today...

Bryant Olsen (4 Jul 2012 - Yesterdays GSLA field trip was something of a success, and we covered a lot of ground and saw some good birds, with 102 species seen in total. Highlighs included, 5 GREATER SAGE-GROUSE at Woodruff Narrows reservoir, plus an adult BALD EAGLE. BLACK TERNS at Bear River Meadow, 2 PURPLE MARTIN at Curtis Creek, WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS at their nest in Monte Cristo Camp Ground plus a couple RED CROSSBILLS nearby, 2 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS near the turn off to Causey Reservior (sadly, not seen by myself but others in the party), 6 BOBLINKS near Eden, and 1 male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD near Pineview Reservoir.  Checklist:..

Brenda Kidman (4 Jul 2012) - [South Weber] - We had a Lazuli Bunting in the backyard tonight. I don't think we have ever had one so late.  Tonight we had five males fighting over the nectar feeder/jelly station and a female was eating the orange. After the boys left she went over and enjoyed the feast at her leisure. She's no dummy! The yard is FULL of babies except our California Quail seem to have lost the single chick they had.

Kris Purdy (1 Jul 2012)- Eric Peterson and I watched the PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at Fort Buenaventura in Ogden, Weber County, this morning at around 8:00 am. The bird is much less active than he was two weeks ago, but he still belted out enough “See-ya, See-ya, See-ya” phrases and bold chip notes that we were able to find him by following his voice. ...

Jun 2012

Kris Purdy (18 Jun 2012) - This morning, I hiked the lower reaches of Beus Canyon in Ogden, Weber County...After more than a mile of climbing and perhaps 1,000-1,500 vertical feet, I heard a Cordilleran Flycatcher calling it’s sweet “pee-weet!” repetitiously from the canopy of Mountain Maple and scrub-oak overhead...

Kris Purdy (16 Jun 2012) - Another LEAST FLYCATCHER dragged me off one of the very lovely river parkways in Ogden, Weber County, today with its distinctive, cut-through-the-musical-clutter-of-other-birds’-songs song. While this bird is hard to see, it sings from public land and it’s possible to identify it as a Least Flycatcher from its song, and at least as an Empid visually.  ...The bird is in the deep, mature cottonwoods northeast of the 21St Street Pond.

Kris Purdy (12  Jun 2012) - I saw five Purple Martins at a site along Monte Cristo Highway (SR-39) where I’ve never seen them before, at mile 42.3 just past (up the road) from one of the many places the power line crosses the highway. The birds are nesting in a large gray snag below the road that’s something of a condominium tree. It appeared to house two pairs of Purple Martins, one pair of Tree Swallows, one pair of Red-naped Sapsuckers, and possibly a pair of Violet-green Swallows.

Kris Purdy (10 Jun 2012) - [Fort Buenaventura Park] - A male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER appears to be defending a territory at Fort Buenaventura Park in Ogden, Weber County. He was there singing, chasing Yellow Warblers and Black-capped Chickadees out of the area, and generally staking his claim this afternoon...

Paul Higgins (3 Jun 2012) - Red-naped Sapsucker--South Fork, Ogden River yesterday morning, didn't stay long, too many campers. Thanks Kris.

David Wheeler (2 Jun 2012) - There was a beautiful Common Loon near the dam at Pineview Reservoir yesterday, full breeding plumage. I can't decide if it is really early or really late, or just really lost. Male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at the North Arm of Pineview Reservoir nature trail. Male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER at Monte Cristo Campground (Thank you, Kris!). Did not see the Three-toed Woodpecker reported there.

May 2012

Paul Higgins (25 May 2012) - Lazuli Bunting and Warbling Vireo, South Fork, Ogden River, Weber County.

Kris Purdy (19 May 2012 - I’ve birded Powder Ridge Road at Powder Mountain Ski Area in Weber County a couple times in the past few days and have seen a nice compilation of mountain birds... highlights: --RED CROSSBILLS every day ... Several WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKERS along Powder Ridge Road not far after turning off SR-158 and beginning the ascent to the condos... --The wing-rips of DUSKY GROUSE and the male’s pre-copulatory single-note “BLOONK!” call, heard three times at dusk a couple nights ago... --Two NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS singing just before dusk somewhere in the canyon and one sounding off in the ski area at sunny 9 am this morning...

Jason St Sauver (14 May 2012) - Had a lovely morning walk at the north arm nature trails along Pineview Reservoir. It's hard to get good looks at the birds in the dense brush - but - that's why they love it...especially the Gray Catbirds! Had several singing and good looks at a couple along the trail - as well as one very vociferous and bright Yellow-breasted Chat! Area was filled with Yellow Warblers, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Orioles and Goldfinches... too.

Kris Purdy (13 May 2012) - If luck and time are with you, you might see a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER along SR-39 at mile 27.2, which is about eight miles east of Huntsville, Weber County...

Kris Purdy (6 May 2012) - Jack Rensel saw a single Vaux’s Swift today over the Ogden River at Rainbow Gardens, located at the mouth of Ogden Canyon in Weber County.

Brenda Kidman (5 May 2012) - What a lovely day to sit and watch BYB'S...I sat outside tonight and saw...Calliope Male, Black Chinned Male and FIVE male Bullock's Orioles.

Kris Purdy (4 May 2012)  ...Along the Weber River west of Fort Buena, an Osprey perched in a cottonwood. This is a sign to me that the bird is nesting nearby.
--Within the fort itself, I saw the most beautiful American Robin I’ve ever seen, due completely to the bird’s partial albinism. This bird was about ¾ albinistic and looked like it had sustained a barrage of snowballs that stuck all over. He was a quite brilliant element as he foraged on the dry, shady forest floor...

Apr 2012

Andy Kleinhesselink (29 Apr 2012) - I did a trip to the North Arm Natural Area of Pineview Reservoir today. Right as I was getting in my car to leave at about 1:20 pm I spotted a small hawk flying north very rapidly. When I got my binoculars on it it was an unmistakable light morph Broad-winged Hawk. Classic light brown above, white underwings with black border to the wings and striking black and white barred tail. It was moving to the north up the valley so I assume it was a migrant and is long gone by now. Other birds of interest included a female Red-breasted Merganser on the reservoir and a pair of Yellow Warblers.

Kris Purdy (22 Apr 2012) - I can’t believe I’m posting under the subject line of WebCo Shorebirds, but I actually had a pretty good shorebirding experience in my county today...
--In addition to American Avocets, the other shorebird were: [highlights]:  Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson’s Phalarope
--I also saw a pair of Long-billed Curlews off 9300W. near Great Salt Lake Minerals Company. There were many other species of birds at the wetlands, such as dabbling ducks, ibis, blackbirds and swallows overhead.
...Also in the cemetery was a Bullock’s Oriole and several Western Kingbirds, with other Western Kingbirds appearing on power and fence lines in many places...

Kris Purdy (18 Apr 2012)- I was stunned just a moment ago to see a Lazuli Bunting at my feeder in Ogden, Weber County. It’s not just that it’s about a week early for this species, but this one’s a female. My experience in the past is that the males arrive about a week ahead of the females, which is usually the last week in April, during one of those spring storms that brings violent and varied weather throughout the day and causes a seething mass of turquoise on the ground under the feeder. The females tend to arrive by the first week of May.

Utahbirds (12 Apr 2012) - Someone reported a Common Loon at Pineview Reservoir. One adult male seen by the dam.

Mar 2012

Jeff Cooper (14 Mar 2012) - Eric Peterson and I got up early Tuesday morning and drove from American Fork to Powder Mountain Ski Resort to see the Rosy Finches... ...Right where the asphalt turns to dirt to get up to the Powder Ridge Village feeder, we located a flock of about 30 or more RED CROSSBILLS. Included in this mix was what we believe is a 1ST YEAR MALE VARIANT (with bright white wing bars--photo in link below) RED CROSSBILL. We wondered if it might be a White-winged Crossbill. The bars are a high-contrasting white... Either way, a variant or WW is rare so we were delighted to find and photograph it...

Kris Purdy (6 Mar 2012) - Well, finally. It’s only taken two years, but I’ve finally seen another Black Rosy-finch at Powder Ridge Village above Powder Mountain Ski Area in Weber County. And another. And possibly a third. ...

Eric Peterson
(4 Mar 2012) - I made the long trek from American Fork to Powder Mountain Ski Area to see the Rosy Finches...I was greeted by a flock of about 60 Grey Crowned Rosy-Finches. There were both races of them in the mix. No Blacks today in the mix. I was also visited by a Clark's Nutcracker, two Steller's Jays, Mountain Chickadees, Pine Siskins and two Hairy Woodpeckers...

Jan 2012

Kris Purdy (31 Jan 2012) - I went to visit an old friend today—an American Dipper—at an angler’s access at The Oaks restaurant parking lot along the Ogden River in Ogden Canyon, Weber County. My friend was not “in”, but instead I found a slate-colored FOX SPARROW hopping along the stones in the river bed...The Oaks is located on SR-39 between mm 12 and 13; the sparrow’s location (and the dipper’s spot) is at the angler’s access at the west end of the parking lot.

Dec 2011

Kris Purdy (18 Dec 2011) - Brian and Jeannette Nosker found a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER in Uinta, Weber County, during yesterday’s Ogden Christmas Bird Count. I went to visit the bird today. She’s an adult and appears to have been working on her chosen tree for quite awhile; perhaps even wintering there for multiple years. Her choice pine is ringed with many parallel rows of holes. Most are not fresh implying she’s got a long-term history with that tree, but the fresh ones are productive enough that a Ruby-crowned Kinglet was feeding from them yesterday also.

Kris Purdy (14 Dec 2011) - Thanks to Pomera for the encouragement to scout our CBC areas for count week species. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in Riverdale today, Weber County, in the backyard at 1127 Ritter Road...

Kris Purdy (10 Dec 2011) - Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County, is hosting three Mandarin Ducks: Two drakes and a hen. The hen appears to be paired with one of the drakes, and he seems to have a gimpy right leg. I have dutifully staked out a Western Screech-owl for the Ogden CBC in his usual spot at Glasmann Park in Ogden, and this morning, I saw a Prairie Falcon in my sector near the Adams Parkway toll booth at I-84 exit 85. It’s about the only place likely to see a Prairie Falcon in my sector. Couldn’t tie him down until next Saturday, however.

Oct 2011

Kris Purdy (24 Oct 2011) - My dog and I came across a RUFFED GROUSE at around 6,200 feet on the year-old U.S. Forest Service Sardine Peak Trail northeast of Snowbasin Ski Resort in Weber County, today.

Sep 2011

Michelle McDaniel (10 Sep 2011) - Sandhill Cranes in Eden, Utah. Also just spotted a Great Blue Heron and a Belted Kingfisher east of there in a pond on the north side of the road l, 6700 East.

Aug 2011

Paul Higgins (19 Aug 2011) - Common Tern, Willard Bay (West Side).

Jul 2011

Kris Purdy (6 Jul 2011) - I’ve seen a male Calliope Hummingbird twice in the last week near Meadows Campground off SR-39. ... Not only is the spot nice for a Calliope, I’ve also seen Willow Flycatchers, Gray Catbirds, Yellow-breasted Chats, Common Nighthawks, Bullock’s Orioles, Fox Sparrows, Black-chinned Hummingbirds, Black-headed Grosbeaks, MacGillivray’s Warblers, and just about all the other passerines you could see at The North Arm...

Jun 2011

Kris Purdy (12 Jun 2011) - You’d think I was reporting today’s sightings from Bear River MBR in the fall, but no, I saw a GREAT EGRET and a pair of Bald Eagles in west Weber County this afternoon near the north end of 8300W, which is likely West Warren or unincorporated Weber County. The egret and several Snowy Egrets were using a slough on the east side of the road. The Bald Eagles were perched in widely separated cottonwoods west of the pastures and feedlots on the west side of the road...

Paul Higgins (2 Jun 2011) - Western Tanagers, Ogden Bay.

May 2011

Kris Purdy (29 May 2011) - [Ogden] - Ding, ding! It’s a male Calliope Hummingbird. I’m so surprised to have a Calliope in the yard this late in May, but am glad to help him get over his spring snowstorm shock.

Paul Higgins (28 May 2011) -  located five Bobolink males near Huntsville, last night. It's really nice to have them back.

Paul Higgins (16 May 2011) - PALM WARBLER - It's right on the north side of Ogden Bay...  It was along the fence and Russian Olives just past the house (east side).

Paul Higgins (15 May 2011) - Ruffed Grouse, South Fork Ogden River, Weber County, Utah.

Brenda Kidman (12 May 2011) - Caliope Hummingbird (male), South Weber.

Kirsten Purdy (12 May 2011) - White-throated Swifts at the head of Ogden Canyon, Weber County. Earlier I visited The North Arm Natural Area of Pineview Reservoir to check on the “regular” male Calliope Hummingbirds that set up territories at the same places every year. ... He was along the Pineview West trail near the log retaining wall, down slope side, and about 20 yards north of the wall.

Apr 2011

Kristin Purdy (22 April 20110 -  The flocks of White-faced Ibis along the eastern border of Ogden Bay WMA are huge; I came across a big flock in a flooded farmer’s field in Taylor, northwest of West Haven, and a good candidate for a GLOSSY IBIS before I had scoped a dozen birds.

Paul Higgins (11 April 2011) - Vesper Sparrows, pair (male and female) North Arm, Pineview Reservoir, Weber County.

Mar 2011

Kris Purdy (26 Mar 2011) - Here’s what one of my indoor cats is good for: Staring intensely through the window from his window shelf at whatever is scarfing up seed under the bird feeder at my home in Ogden, Weber County. I have to check what’s there when I see that intensity. It’s usually juncos or Rizzo the Rat. This afternoon, however, a LINCOLN’S SPARROW was with two juncos. Whoopee! That’s a new yard bird, and not one I thought I’d ever see under my feeder. Good kitty.

Feb 2011

Ted McGrath (22 Feb, 2011) - Yesterday at about 11:00 AM, a small flock of Red Crossbills came into our back yard to feed on the sunflower seeds in our feeders.  They came and went for a couple of hours after that.  The most we ever saw at once was six, and we saw mature males, mature females, and at least one immature male...

Ryan O'Donnell (12 Feb 2011) -
I took an expedition to Weber County today to hit some birding spots.  My main goal was the feeders at Powder Mountain, where I found about 30 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES.  Two of them were the coastal "Hepburn's" race, one appeared to be a Hepburn's x interior intergrade (?) and the rest were the interior subspecies. ... On the drive down the mountain, I stumbled upon a flock of about 400 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a great find for a non-irruption year...

Kris Purdy (4 Feb 2011) - Diana and Jon LeVasseur saw and photographed a BLUE JAY on 2900E. in Liberty, Weber County, at about 1:30 pm today. ... The bird was off the west side of the road just south of house number 4727 (on a wooden garage at the base of the driveway on the west side of the road). It was keeping company with a Steller’s Jay. 2900E. runs north-south at the base of the North Ogden Divide Road in Ogden Valley. Six or seven Lewis’s Woodpeckers are spending the winter along this part of the road as well.

Kris Purdy (2 Feb 2011) - Thanks to Cindy and Steve Sommerfeld and Paul Higgins for reporting the NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL at the base of the North Ogden Divide in Ogden Valley, Weber County, on Sunday. I saw the bird early this afternoon and it seemed to be in the same place (on a branch over the road) doing the same thing (hunting the snow-free south-facing slope) as what the earlier crew reported. The bird was in the area of a deer crossing warning sign for the eastbound lane only.   Between my first two unsuccessful passes along the base of the divide and my last two successful passes, I turned north from the divide road (4100N.) onto 2900E. and found 6 LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS using the power poles or dead cottonwoods, or in the groves of oak along the road. I haven’t known Lewis’s to winter at this location in the past. ... I also noticed Steller’s Jays at the feeders well-hidden at the house on the northwest corner of 4100N. and 2900E.

Jan 2011

Cindy Sommerfeld (30 Jan 2011) - This morning we met Paul Higgins at the Mouth of Ogden Canyon. Ogden canyon was closed. (At that time we didn't know it was good luck) This forced us go go over the North Pass. Coming off the pass, just a few hundred yards from the houses, a Pygmy-Owl was sitting on a branch that hung over the road. ... We then ventured to the north west end of the Ogden valley. Where we found several Lewis's Woodpeckers.  We also went up to Powder Mountain and saw many Rosy-Finches.

Kristen Purdy
(20 Jan 2011) - I was cutting through Bues Park in Ogden, Weber County, this afternoon to link a Bonneville Shoreline Trail hike with the return walk home through neighborhoods when agitated and staccato “dee-dee-dee” calls erupted from the wooded edge of the pond. It was the cacophony of a mad mob of Chickadees that bore investigating. Several Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a couple Dark-eyed Juncos joined the fray. I looked into the dense deciduous trees ... where a Wood Duck box was mounted on the opposite side. From the mob’s behavior, I concluded the flyer was a Western Screech-owl that had been caught more exposed than it wished, and it was seeking a bit of solitude inside the box. ... A HERMIT THRUSH had joined the activity, perching within a brushy deadfall and calling an abbreviated “Chope. Chope. Chope.” While I’ve seen up to six Hermit Thrushes at a time in other winters at Bues, this species is still classified as rare in the winter in Utah and I haven’t seen one there yet this year.

Kristen Purdy (18 Jan 2011) - A flock of about 50 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES was using the feeder at Powder Ridge Condominiums above Powder Mountain Ski Resort in Weber County this morning at about 11:00. No Black Rosy-finches were in this flock, but it’s not a stretch to expect them, as several fed at this location last year...
   - I also visited North Fork Park in Liberty, Weber County, and saw three female PINE GROSBEAKS on the Cold Water Trail. The three were high in a fir eating something that looked like buds; the location was near the only set of restrooms on the trail. Several LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS were on power poles on 5950N, which ends at the park.

Kirsten Purdy (12 Jan 2011) - Members of Wasatch Audubon saw a GREAT EGRET several times along the Weber River today at Fort Buenaventura County Park, Ogden, Weber County, this morning. While the egret was the most rare bird we saw, other highlights included a WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, a Great Horned Owl and high numbers of Mourning Doves for the winter season.

Jeff Bilsky (8 Jan 2011) - There is a Ross's Goose in a flock of Canada's at the corner of Flint and Layton Parkway in what I assume is Layton.

Kristin Purdy (6 Jan 2010) - I spent some quality time this afternoon with two female PINE GROSBEAKS and a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL in North Fork Park, Liberty, Weber County. ... The shocker to me is that the elevation at that particular location was only 5700 feet. Although the species has been reported several times in Weber County at Powder Mountain Ski Resort (most recently by Jason St. Sauver on Nov 27), Powder Mountain is 3,000 feet higher than today's location. I've never seen the species before in Weber County. ... My continued whistling brought a Townsend's Solitaire to the Mountain Ash 10 feet in front of me that the grosbeaks had apparently feasted on, dropping berry detritus on the snow.

Nov 2010

Kristin Purdy (27 Nov 2010) - I’m pleased to report that the drake Mandarin Duck population at Beus Park In Ogden, Weber County, has increased by 100%. Today, there were two. ... One of the resident Western Screech-owls was roosting in his or her usual spot; reply for details. There was also a Brown Creeper using the big trees along the east side of the pond from the east feeder down to the southeast corner.

Kristin Purdy (15 Nov 2010) - Yesterday, I saw a Merlin at a particular location for the fourth time—on the double set of power poles next to the pagoda-style Kobe Restaurant sign (formerly Dai Enko Tei) in South Ogden, Weber County, at the intersection of US-89 and Harrison Blvd. I saw the bird there for the first time on October 17, and now I’ve seen it there three times since this past Wednesday. I’ll assume it’s the same Merlin, a Taiga female or young male.

Kristin Purdy ( 2 Nov 2010) - I saw and heard a few more EVENING GROSBEAKS this afternoon, this time in Weber County on a trail east of Snowbasin Ski Resort.

Oct 2010

Weston Smith (27 oct 2010) - The Wasatch Audubon saw a White-throated Sparrow on their Wednesday field trip to Pineview Reservoir's North Arm Viewing Area. Bird was seen about 11am on east side of trail bridge over the dry river feeding on Night Shade berries ... and last viewed moving north with a Song Sparrow along the east side of river bed. This area is in Weber County near the intersection of ut158 and 2200N in Eden, UT. ... On a power pole at the road into Middle Fork was a Lewis Woodpecker.

Sep 2010

Kristin Purdy (22 Sep 2010) - Kim's reports of the Lewis's Woodpeckers in her yard in Summit County inspired me to visit Liberty in Ogden Valley, Weber County, to check on the resident population. I saw more Lewis's Woodpeckers today (about 15) than I've seen on any single day of my life...

Aug 2010

Kristen Purdy (1 Aug 2010) - I saw a female or juvenile EVENING GROSBEAK calling from the top of a dead aspen along the Wheeler Creek Trail below Snowbasin Ski Resort in Weber County this morning at about 9:00.

Jul 2010

Kris Purdy (10 July 2010) - On a return trip to Causey Reservoir in Weber County netted another Cordilleran Flycatcher nest on a little ledge in a vertical rock face just 10-11 feet above the water. The nest was not very apparent because it was a moss and lichen structure within a clump of the wildflower Alumroot, a species of Heuchera, which is commonly called Coral Bells when you buy it at a plant nursery. However, I saw the site because both parents were flycatching in little loops from branches overhanging the cliff and the water, and then delivering the insects to the nest. ... Also of interest at Causey today were four different Common Merganser broods, ranging from three to thirteen ducklings. The older ducklings of one of the three-bird broods seemed to be doing quite well catching both fish and crawfish.

Kris Purdy ( 2 July 2010 ) - Add Causey Reservoir in east Weber County to the short list of Northern Utah locations where Common Mergansers nest. Today, I saw a hen merganser with 10 ducklings. The young were small enough so that one was riding on Mom’s back. I’m pretty sure that my friend, Scott Baxter, photographed a hen with ducklings at Causey a couple years ago.

Jun 2010

Kristin Purdy (5 Jun 2010( -  Wasatch Audubon always contributes to National Trails Day, that's today, by leading a birdwalk at whatever trail Weber Pathways is commemorating on this day. It happened to be the section of the Weber River Parkway west and south of Fort Buenaventura in Ogden, Weber County...
We saw lots of activity from the Kingfisher Wetlands Loop south to the 30thStreet underpass, and then around the wetlands loop past Ooh-Ah Point.  Birds seen or heard:  [just the highlights] Wood Duck, Sora, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-breasted Chat...

Kris Purdy (1 June 2010) -This evening, I saw two male Gray Partridge along SR-39, mile 27.1, past the string of USFS campgrounds along the South Fork of the Ogden River east of Ogden Valley, Weber County. You can reach this area from I-15 exit 344 (which is at approximately mile 4.5 of SR-39) and driving east.

May 2010

Kris Purdy (18 May 2010) - [Huntsville] - BOBOLINKS have arrived in Ogden Valley northeast of Huntsville in Weber County, and can be observed from one of the usual places, Middlefork Lane. To get there, travel east on SR-39 from I-15 exit 344, 12th Street. Pass through Ogden Canyon, along the south shore of Pineview Reservoir, and east of Huntsville.

Dave Wheeler (16 May 2010) - I drove off to the North Arm Wildlife Area of Pineview to seek the Calliope hummingbird, and by the time I arrived the gods had tired of their torments. I saw a couple tiny males in their "fizyoooooo"-producing display flights, and was healed.

Kristin Purdy (9 May 2010) - .... The North Arm Natural Area of Pineview Reservoir, Weber County, this morning. One male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was on territory on top willow and hawthorne branches. I believe this is the Jack Binch Calliiope, one Jack found a few years ago, which continues to return to the same spot...
I checked a few other places around the valley, including a dawn walk down Old Snowbasin Road from the flagged entrance to the ski resort; there were a drumming Ruffed Grouse, Red-naped Sapsuckers, Steller’s Jays, Mountain Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, a MacGillivray’s Warbler, Cassin’s Finches, and a distant pair of moose on a ridge.
Earlier this week, I checked on the Lewis’s Woodpeckers in Liberty in the northwest end of the valley on the way to North Fork Park.

Brenda Kidman (5 May 2010) - [South Weber] We got the WESTERN KINGBIRDS back on Sunday. We have several pairs that nest in and around the yard.  We have also had COMMON GRACKLES. It seems to be a little early for them but they are not one I keep track of as well as some of our favorites.  We have lots of BULLOCKS and there are still WHITE CROWNED and LAZULI'S but the Indigo has gone. Evidently the better weather gave it more options.

Apr 2010

Kristin Purdy (30 April 2010) - Keith Evans in South Ogden, Weber County, had a male INDIGO BUNTING at his feeder.

Kristin Purdy (12 April 2010) - I'm pleased to report about a half-dozen Cassin's Finches are eating aspen catkins in my yard in Ogden, Weber County, this morning.

Paul Higgins (9 April 2010) - Fox Sparrow, Pineview Reservoir, Weber County.

Mar 2010

Kristin Purdy (9 March 2010) - Thought I'd share the status of spring migration in Weber County in the last week. A Turkey Vulture today;  a Say's Phoebe in Ogden Valley. Two female Cassin's Finches in Anderson Cove Campground in Ogden Valley, one of which was singing with gusto. A female Mountain Bluebird at 8800 feet. Northern Saw-whet Owls singing in the mountains.

Kristin Purdy (9 March 2010) - The male Mandarin Duck was at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County, again yesterday.

Bryant Olsen (7 March 2010) - [Ogden Bay] Today I headed up to Ogden Bay and saw some good birds. At least 10 SANDHILL CRANES, some dancing, a flock of 29 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, CINNAMON TEAL, a flock of YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS flew over singing, 65 SNOW GEESE flew over, lots of BALD EAGLES, TUNDRA SWANS, and various ducks. I was not able to relocate the reported 16 minima Cackling Geese at the "Oxbow", but I did see one TAVERNER'S CACKLING GOOSE mixed in with the hundreds of CANADA GEESE near by.

Feb 2010

Kristin Purdy (16 Feb 2010) - A male Mandarin Duck  at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County. The person who described the duck to me is Marily Glen, a member of my book club.

Paul Higgins (15 Feb 2010) - Clark's Nutcracker--Powder Mountain, Weber County,  February 14, 2010.

Paul Higgins (14 Feb 2010) - Rosy-Finches, Powder Mountain, Weber County, Utah. February 14, 2010

Nov 2009

Kris Purdy (19 Nov 2009) - A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was using the feeder on the east side of Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County, today at nearly 5 p.m. The bird was a tan-striped morph. It retreated into the brush behind the feeder when I approached to fill the feeder. I didn't see the sparrow again, despite backing off and waiting 10 minutes or so...

Oct 2009

Les Talbot (27 Oct 2009) - On Sunday (10/15) at about 3:00 pm a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak was at my feeders. I fed for about five minutes and then flew off. I have not seen it since. Yesterday a Sharp-tailed Hawk landed, at the feeders for awhile and I was doing yard work on that side of the house and didn't have any bird activity...

Jul 2009

Kris Purdy (9 Mar 2009) - What's a Common Loon doing at Pineview Reservoir in Weber County in July?, you're thinking. Wasatch Audubon saw a Common Loon at Pineview today from
the north end of the Winter's Grove Nature Trail that runs through Jefferson Hunt Campground. The bird was a subadult and by assumption, a non-breeder rather than an impossibly early juvenile migrant...

Kris Purdy (9 Mar 2009) - A male INDIGO BUNTING was singing on the slope east of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) in Ogden, Weber County, this afternoon around 12:30 p.m. I was passing on the trail below the bird's location when I aimed my  binocs at a ruckus that sounded like young Lazuli Buntings chipping alarm  notes. The first bird I settled on was this male Indigo, then I watched him  sing from multiple perches along the slope above me. He flew away a couple  times, but returned to the same dead top of a scrub oak and used others for  singing perches in the area as well.

Jun 2009

Ted and Carolyn McGrath (2 Jun 2009) - This evening at 7:00 PM we saw a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak in our back yard! It perched in a tree for an extended period, then flew down to our sunflower feeder and ate for a few minutes. It then flew into the woods as a violent thunderstorm was approaching. Even in the evening light, its bib was vivid rosy red against a white breast.

May 2009

Kris Purdy 30 Apr 2009) - A male SUMMER TANAGER was singing at the entrance gate to Fort Buenaventura Park in Ogden, Weber County, this morning. The bird is a first spring male
and boy-oh-boy, does he look FUNNY with a red hood and all other plumage yellowish-green.

Apr 2009

Bill Fenimore (19 Apr 2009) - Happy to report that the Red Crossbills have found Farmington and my backyard. Yesterday, there were four female and one male red crossbill on
the blackoil sunflower feeder. We also had a fairly large group of cassins finch yesterday and today.

Mar 2009

Tim Avery (7 Mar 2009) - Jeff Bilsky, Carl Ingwell and I spent the morning birding around northern Utah. ...Heading south and east we went up to Huntsville and the City Park where there were between 20-25 White-winged Crossbill, a number of Siskin, Chickadees, Nuthatches and Eurasian Collared-Doves. We also checked out the cemetery which was dad (no pun intended). Leaving Huntsville a flock of birds at the VFW (I think) caught our attention. Among House Finches and Pine Siskin were at least 2 more WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.  We headed back towards Ogden and I stopped to photograph the waterfall near the mouth of Ogden Canyon. 2 Flocks of GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES flew off the hillside and down the canyon. A total of maybe 30-40 birds were seen.

Feb 2009

Kris Purdy (19 Feb 2009) - Add Ogden Valley in Weber County to the list of locations WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS are using this winter. I saw them in two locations in the valley today. The first was on 6800E., which is a south turn off SR-39 at about mile 17.1 across the road from Anderson Cove Campground. The other spot was in Huntsville Cemetery at the west end of 100S. in Huntsville on Cemetery Point.  The flock in the spruce trees at the corner of SR-39 and 6800E. numbered at  least 30 birds, although I only saw five until they flew. What a surprise. I  don't think any Red Crossbills were present by the sound of the flight calls. The group at the cemetery numbered only four White-wings

May 2008

.Brenda Kidman (4 May 2008) - Well, it has been quite the unusual year for us in South Weber as well.  ...We got a new male Calliope Hummingbird yesterday. He has different neck feathers than the others that have been hanging around for a while do. They are more the spiky look.

Apr 2008

Brenda Kidman (22 Apr 2008) - Tonight I was sitting outside and had the pleasure of seeing a Male Calliope Hummingbird. My husband came out with his camera and we were treated to a serenade and it turns out we had two! It's only been a year but I always forget how stinkin' cute they are. It was so great.

Jan 2008

Lee and Paula Shirley (9 Jan 2008) - Harris's Sparrow - Lee and Paula Shirley observed the sparrow at the Ogden Nature Center at the last Audubon feeder (#5) at 1:30 p.m. Jan.8th.

Kris Purdy (3 Jan 2008) - Jack Rensel saw the Red-shouldered Hawk at the Ogden Nature Center again today, so there's a good 'un for those of you who keep annual lists. The bird did his usual Houdini Hawk routine--was nowhere to be found on the 152-acre property until Jack was leaving via the main driveway; there the bird was on a post near the entrance.

Dec 2007

Steve Carr (11 Dec 2007) - The Red-shouldered Hawk that Kris has been monitoring was seen at the picnic grove, in the far NW corner of the Ogden Nature Center. One of the workers at the ONC said that it is usually seen on the very east edge of the property in the a.m., then moves to the picnic grove and spends the afternoons there. Sure enough, although I examined the east edge from 10:30 to noon and didn't see it, I did locate it at the picnic grove at 1:30 p.m. Also seen was one Red-tailed Hawk and 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks - plus a zillion Robins.

Kristin Purdy (10 Dec 2007) - The Red-shouldered Hawk was at the Ogden Nature Center again today in Weber County. This time, the bird was in the open field just north of the parking lot. When I pulled in it was perched on one of the power poles that supports two bat houses out in the field. I can't believe I saw the bird so quickly today and watched it while my engine was still running. On Thursday, I searched for the bird for three hours on foot and never found it. The hawk took several perches around the perimeter of that particular field; two of which it chose because Red-tails were using them. This Red-shouldered must not be interested in peaceful coexistence; because it seemed to purposefully drive away the Red-tails. Eventually, the Red-shouldered crossed the field and I saw it in trees far to the east of Teal Pond. Later, it was back in the field north of the parking lot.

Kristin Purdy (5 Dec 2007) - Jack Rensel found and photographed a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk at the Ogden Nature Center in Ogden, Weber County, last week and yesterday. Several of us saw Jack's digiscoped images last night and we flocked to the Center today. John Bellmon, Dennis Downey, Doug Roberts and I found the hawk in a row of trees 200-250 yards north of the Avocet Pond Observation tower. We scoped the bird across the open field and eventually were able to cut that distance in half by walking north and staying along the edge of the trees. It was a good study opportunity, good enough to say this bird is a juvenile of the elegans (California) subspecies.

Nov 2007

Kris Purdy (6 Nov 2007) - Just had a flock of seven Bohemian Waxwings land in the aspens in my backyard in Ogden, Weber County. They distracted me from my yard work with their trill distinctive from Cedars; what a way to take a break from yard work! Anyway, I crept over to my truck and grabbed my binocs to enjoy their rusty undertail coverts and red, white and yellow wing markings; then they took off and headed north. They need to come back. Who wants to go back to yard work?!?

Oct 2007

Kris Purdy (27 Nov 2007) - Several Black-capped Chickadees mobbed a Northern Shrike in Jefferson Hunt Campground in Ogden Valley, Weber County, this morning. The shrike appeared to be a first-year bird due to the buffy-tinged, scaly breast.

Bill Fenimore (7 Oct 2007) - We saw a beautiful male Summer Tanager on our bird walk Saturday along the Weber River Parkway in Riverdale. Walk north from 4300 South parking area until you reach the 1 mile post (although, it is approximately 1/4 mile from where you start on the trail), count 12 hash marks on the path way (approximately 40 yards) from the 1 mile post. The bird was in the Russian Olives on the west side of the trail. After disappearing, it responded to a tape and spent another 4-5 minutes nearby in the open. The Weber River Parkway is reached off Riverdale Road, going north on 700 west, turn right at the 2nd right onto 4300 south. There is a parking area off 4300 south. Walk north along the park way.

Feb 2007

Kristin Purdy (4 Feb 2007) - Hooper is Eurasian Collared-Dove territory and I saw many on the way in and out to the bay. As I recall, our Ogden CBC team that surveys that sector logged something like 162 collared-doves in Hooper. I also saw a couple in Clinton as I headed south to Antelope Island.

Nov 2006

Cheryl Peterson (27  Nov 2006) - John Bellmon, Bonnie Williams and I saw the Worm-eating Warbler at about 9:45 am. Hopefully everyone that was there when we left got to see it also. Thanks, Kris, for the great directions and for showing us the Western Screech Owl.

Kris Purdy (25 Nov 2006) - Thanks to Milt for posting the [Beus Pond] Worm-eating Warbler and to Glenn for calling everyone listed on his speed dial to report the bird :^D. Here are some specifics for tomorrow's warbler-seekers. The bird is using the slope east of the pond high above the paved path and down to the flat area outside the southeast curve of the path. The area is thick with scrub oak; the understory is thick bracken fern and poison ivy... From the Beus Park parking lot, walk south on the paved path that runs along the east side of the pond. When you reach the southeast corner, you'll notice many spruce trees outside the curve. A foot path leads southeast between two spruces from this point. I tied a strand of pink tape on one of them. Once you pass through the spruces, you're in Worm-eating Warbler territory. ...On to other stuff. In addition to the Western Screech-owl Paul Higgins reported this morning, I also saw two Winter Wrens. One was in the "usual" place, in brush at the base of the east slope. After seeing the warbler for the first time this morning at 10:00 for an intermittent 20 seconds, I pished for him and the Winter Wren came out of the brush below me. I saw what I believe was a second one in the blackberry vines at the south end of the pond between the tree with the Wasatch Audubon feeder and the nearest bench at the water's edge. ...In case this post isn't weird enough yet, the Anna's Hummingbird that has been visiting my feeders since November 10 appears to be visiting my suet feeders now in addition to the nectar feeders.

Kris Purdy (10 Nov 2006) - The hummingbird that visited my feeder this morning at about 7:40 was a male Anna's Hummingbird. He returned after I defrosted the top of the feeder. I've had several good looks at him through the scope. He appears to be a hatch-year male. His gorget and forecrown are fully feathered in rose-red and he has a patch of rose-red behind each eye. The back of his head and neck are green. It has only taken 3 years of maintaining my feeders in the winter attract an Anna's Hummingbird. Now I know why Don Quixote kept tilting at those windmills.

Kris Purdy (3 Nov 2006) - I saw the Winter Wren again this morning at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County, twice between 8:30 and 9:30. Once again, the bird was on the east side of the park and east of the path.

Oct 2006

Kris Purdy (30 Oct 2006) - I was minding my own business at Beus Park in Ogden, Weber County this morning when a Winter Wren insisted I go over and have a look. The wren was in the undergrowth on the east side of the park and east of the path as well.

Mort Somer (21 Oct 2006) - Unbelievably, we had a second immature male Anna's Hummingbird come to our feeder this afternoon. I haven't seen the first one since yesterday morning but a very different looking juvenile male showed up around 6:00pm today. The developing chin and head markings were clearly different from those of the first Anna's.  Suggestion: get your hummer feeders back out.

Mort Somer (16 Oct 2006) -  I still have a hummer feeder out here in North Ogden and it was visited several times today by an immature male Anna's Hummingbird, only the second one I have ever seen in Utah and the first to come to our yard.

Kris Purdy (11 Oct 2006) - Members of Wasatch Audubon saw two Winter Wrens along the Steward/Birdsong Trail in Ogden, Weber County today during the Wednesday morning birdwalk. The birds responded to pishing. Follow the Birdsong Trail signs through the lower willow and cottonwood area until the woods close in and a juniper tree hangs over the trail. That's where we saw the wrens.

Aug 2006

Kristin Purdy (26 Aug 2006) - I birded Fort Buenaventura Park in Ogden, Weber County this morning and was amply rewarded. One of the best birds was a Northern Waterthrush which I pished up along the west bank of the Weber River. I didn't even know the bird was there before I started pishing. It popped up to give me a good once-over from willow saplings along the river about 15 feet away from my pishing spot... Several other species that came in for my pishing a Wilson's Warbler (most common warbler species of the day) were a Cassin's Vireo, a Nashville Warbler, and an I'm-pretty-darn-sure Hammond's Flycatcher. I didn't see any of them before I started to pish, either.

May 2006

Jack Binch (14 May 2006) - I went out birding yesterday... to see the Calliope at the North Arm that Kris reported. I followed the direct trail and just at the point where you will get you feet wet for the first time was a Northern Waterthrush...I found the southern Calliope and also found I had a full memory card after just a couple of shots...

Kristin Purdy (9 May 2006) - Buck Russell's report of a Calliope Hummingbird in Logan yesterday inspired me to visit The North Arm Natural Area in Ogden Valley, Weber County, this afternoon to see if any Calliopes are there yet. I'm pleased to report that Mother Nature's rhythms are amazingly predictable. Two males have set up territories in the same places as in the last 2 years; in fact, one of them is using the same tree.

Mar 2006

Kris Purdy (5 Mar 2006) - Sorry to sound like a broken record, but about 100 Bohemian Waxwings hung out for most of today in Anderson Cove Campground in Ogden Valley, Weber County. At times they were near the shore at the mouth of the creek that divides the campground into two sides. Late in the day they were feeding in fruit trees on the west side of the campground where the campsites are located.

Kris Purdy (2 Mar 2006) - Anybody sick of Bohemian Waxwings yet? I'm not. I saw 40-50 of them today in Jefferson Hunt Campground in Ogden Valley, Weber County. ...Jefferson Hunt Campground is located In Ogden Valley along SR-39 at about mile marker 18. The place is still pretty snowy with depths of granular snow up to a foot. But snowshoes or skis will get you in there and I doubt the white stuff will last much longer...

Feb 2006

Kristin Purdy (19 Feb 2006) - Two Lincoln's Sparrows were about the last birds I expected to see during a day of winter birding in west Weber County. But there they were in extreme west Plain City on the road to Harold Crane WMA. Specifically that's 6700W. about 150 feet north of the intersection with 1900N. A Northern Shrike was out in the field north of 700N. in West Warren west of the cemetery, and lots of active American Tree Sparrows used the olive hedgerows and fields along that road and at the parking area of Harold Crane WMA.

Kristin Purdy (12 Feb 2006) - Mort and Carolyn Somer saw a flock of about 150 Bohemian Waxwings near the entrance to the Swanson Environmental Center in Liberty, Ogden Valley, on Friday. The location is well into the northwest end of the valley off SR-162.

Kristin Purdy (12 Feb 2006) - I submit the second report with unabashed pleasure because the sighting is a new yard species for me in Ogden.  Twenty-three Bohemian Waxwings just swarmed into trees along the back border of my yard. Their presence had nothing to do with me and everything to do with my neighbor's juniper bushes, which the waxwings plundered liberally.

Dec 2005

Kris Purdy (28 Dec 2005) - I saw two Bohemian Waxwings in a flock of about 150 Cedars in Ogden Valley in Weber County this morning. The location was in a Cottonwood along the south shore of Pineview Reservoir, just east of Anderson Cove Campground and near the intersection of Trapper's Loop (SR-167) and SR-39.

Kris Purdy (28 Dec 2005) - About 2 weeks ago, Jeanette and Brian Nosker saw and photographed a flock of about 40 Gray-crowned Rosy Finches at the Hidden Lake Lodge at Powder Mountain Ski Area in Weber County. The area where they saw the finches requires lift-ticket access.

Kris Purdy (18 Dec 2005) - Bohemian Waxwings were also reported on the Ogden Christmas Count yesterday by the team of Keith Evans, Shirley Lee, and Sharen Perry. They saw two Bohemians in a flock of Cedars near the intersection of Harrison and 11th Streets in Ogden.

Kristin Purdy (16 Dec 2005) - I saw an adult Ferruginous Hawk in Weber County this morning on 9300W and north of the intersection with 900S. 9300W is approximately 10 miles west of I-15, and is the road that leads to the Great Salt Lake Minerals plant tucked against the eastern slope of Little Mountain....Other raptors in the area included Northern Harriers, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, an almost coal-black Rough-legged Hawk, American Kestrels, Prairie Falcons, a Merlin, and a Great Horned Owl. Several of these, including the owl, were along 8300W north of the intersection with 900S....

Oct 2005

Kristin Purdy (31 Oct 2005) - Jack Rensel of Wasatch Audubon mentioned to me he had a Blue Jay in his yard in Ogden in Weber County on Saturday. Although he hasn't seen it since, a friend of his had a Blue Jay in his yard today, about two blocks south of Jack's house.

Jul 2005

Kristin Purdy (14 July 2005) - The Ovenbird continues to advertise for a girlfriend on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in Ogden above the 29th Street Trailhead. I visited my "bud" Tuesday evening between 6 and 7 pm and found him singing along the usual stretch of trail. I chased him a bit and enjoyed watching him walk along horizontal scrub oak branches in the canopy.

Jun 2005

Bruce Robinson (25 June 2005) - If you did not get a chance to see the Ovenbird earlier this week, it's not too late, at least as of 9:00 this morning. It was still in the same area that Kris put out the pink tapes...Thanks, Kris, for the EXCELLENT directions!

Kristin Purdy (23 June 2005) - A Red-eyed Vireo was singing and showing himself just a little at Fort Buenaventura in Ogden this morning around 10:00.

Kristin Purdy (18 June 2005) - Mort and Carolyn Somer and I observed an Ovenbird on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail above the 29th Street Trailhead in Ogden, Weber County, this morning around 11:00. We got excellent views of the bird and it was singing loudly as well. We watched, listened, and chased it around scrub oak for 20-30 minutes. Mort successfully photographed the bird.

Joel and Kathy (10 June 2005) - This evening we visited the North Arm Preserve at Pineview Reservoir, and the male Calliope Hummingbird was still atop the tree that was flagged by Kristin...

Apr 2005

Kris Purdy (29 April 2005) - I saw two pairs of Blue-winged Teal today at The North Arm Nature Area of Pineview Reservoir in Weber County. The teal were along the east side of the area; I was above them looking down from the Old Highway.

Kris Purdy (4 April 2005) - ...I saw a large flock of Cedar Waxwings at Golf City on south Harrison Blvd across from the South Ogden water towers in Weber County. Surely, I thought, there must be at least one Bohemian Waxwing in that flock. And so there was...just one Bohemian. Maybe that was the last one of the winter season.

Mar 2005

Kristin Purdy (22 Mar 2005) - ...Today I saw a flock of 152 Bohemian Waxwings in northeast Weber County on Evergreen Park Drive... The location (as the waxwing flies) is approximately 5 miles northeast of Ogden Valley...the spot is off SR-39 at mile 27.9, 3.2 miles west of Red Rock Ranch and Outfitters...

Feb 2005

Kristin Purdy (26 Feb 2005) - I birded Jefferson Hunt and Anderson Cove Campgrounds in Ogden Valley, Weber County, over the past couple days. Highlights of the trips included Evening Grosbeaks, Virginia Rails...in Jefferson Hunt and Red Crossbills today at Anderson Cove.

Kristin Purdy (10 Feb 2005) - This morning between 8:30 and 9:30 I saw many Bohemian Waxwings in Ogden, Weber County. The specific location was a block north of Weber State University and near the 36th and Birch Street intersection.

Jan 2005

Kristin Purdy (24 Jan 2005) - There's nothing like seeing a Northern Saw-whet Owl in sunny Ogden Valley in Weber County to lift one's spirits! Glenn Barlow and I watched a sunning, sleeping Northern Saw-whet in a small juniper tree this afternoon around 3 pm. The tree is situated about 70 feet off SR-158 and an agitated Townsend's Solitaire "pointed out" the predator to me.

Kristin Purdy (3 Jan 2005) - I saw two juvenile Harris's Sparrows in separate locations today along the Weber/Box Elder County line. The first one was in Weber County along a canal that intersects the Weber County Pathways Rail Trail and about 1/2 mile south of the trail head...

Nov 2004

Kris Purdy (4 Nov 2004) - The Red-necked Grebe remains at The Narrows area of Pineview Reservoir. Lee and Paula Shirley, Lynn Carroll and I saw the grebe from a pullout at about mile 14.5 of SR-39. The number of Pacific Loons has now doubled--we saw two today, and I believe both are first-year birds.

Pomera Fronce (2 Nov 2004) - Kris Purdy just called me from Pineview Reservoir. While she was looking at a Pacific Loon, a juvenile Red-necked Grebe swam into view. She cited mile marker 14 on Highway 39 as her lookout point. She will post more information this afternoon.

Sep 2004

Kristin Purdy (11 Sept 2004) - A Lewis's Woodpecker perched on a power pole at the corner of Shadow Valley Drive and Fillmore Ave in Ogden/Weber County this afternoon. This pole served as the winter pantry of a Lewis's Woodpecker until mid-May, and then the bird was gone for the summer. A Lewis's also spent the winter of 2002-2003 in the same vicinity. I choose to believe it's the same one.

Jun 2004

Kristin Purdy (22 June 2004) - The Red-eyed Vireo is still singing loudly on the Weber River Trail (a.k.a. Riverdale Parkway) in Riverdale. I heard and saw it this morning around 9:00 at the north end of the first bridge. Earlier, it was not accessible but singing across the river between the first and second bridge. On June 11, I heard it at the second bridge. Looks like this vireo is calling Riverdale 'home' for the summer.

Mort Somer (10 June 2004) - As I write this a White-winged Dove is dozing in a cottonwood in our backyard in N. Ogden.

Kristin Purdy (5 June 2004) -  [others]...and I saw a male Lark Bunting around the entrance to the private 'Rafter "S" Ranch' off UT 39 this morning around 9:00 and again this afternoon around 3:00. The Lark Bunting is classified as a rare summer resident on the 2004 Utah Field Checklist and was a new bird for all of us.

May 2004

Joel and Kathy Beyer (29 May 2004) - We visited the Riverdale Parkway this evening at 6:00 p.m., and it took about a half hour before we heard the [Red-eyed Vireo] singing, in the trees at the second bridge. ...Also on the Riverdale Parkway, about 20 yards north of the first bridge, was a Least Flycatcher. It was flycatching from the tops of the bushes near the stream, and other than some 30 seconds of "che-beks", the bird did not vocalize for the half hour we watched it.

David Wheeler (28 May 2004) - The Red-eyed Vireo reported yesterday by Ms. Purdy (thanks, Kristin!) was still at the Riverdale Parkway as of about 8 pm last night, singing its heart out. It also responds extremely well to a tape of its song (one rep was all that was necessary to bring it swooping down from the heights). It was at the long, wooden bridge/walkway south of the one where the Rusty blackbird was found last winter.

Kristin Purdy (27 May 2004) - ... the Red-eyed Vireo I saw and heard on Riverdale Parkway in Weber County from 10:00-12:00 this morning. The section of the parkway is just south of where the Rusty Blackbird was seen by many birders this winter. ...Hearing him was easy. Seeing him was another matter. ...The bird sang and I saw it all four times I passed by this spot during the 2 hours. Your best bet to find the vireo is to be familiar with his song. The bird was not shy about singing loud, but it remained high up in the trees and didn't move much while foraging or singing...

Kristin Purdy (2 May 2004) - I birded the North Arm Nature Area of Pineview Reservoir in Weber County today and saw another male Calliope Hummingbird. I know, I know! I feel guilty--two is more than my share. Unlike the one that came to my feeder last night, I believe the one at the North Arm may stick around...The North Arm offers good Calliope Hummingbird habitat in the form of streamside brush...

Mar 2004

Kristin Purdy (20 March 2004) - I saw three Trumpeter Swans at Pineview Reservoir in Huntsville, Utah (Weber County), this afternoon. All three are cygnets marked with yellow collars with black lettering, and left pink underwings. The collar numbers are Y01, Y03, and Y09. The three Trumpeters were generally keeping company with three Tundra Swans. Those six were the only swans I saw on the reservoir, which is mostly iced over.

Feb 2004

Kristin Purdy (18 Feb 2004) - Coincidental to Bruce's report below, yesterday a colleague of mine who lives in West Weber (west of Ogden and 6 miles north of Hooper) told me a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker visited her over the weekend. She described a male with black malar stripes, red nape crescent, and flashing yellow underwings.

Bruce Robinson (17 Feb 2004) - My son Wayne just called to tell me that he has 3 Yellow-Shafted Flicker's in his yard. (Yep, birding is both genetic and contagious!!!)... Wayne lives in Hooper, Weber Co.

Joel and Kathy Beyer - Other birding highlights for the week....Mon. 2/16: Varied Thrush, at Beus Park in Ogden...

Joel and Kathy Beyer (15 Feb 2004) - We saw...the female Rusty Blackbird...this morning. The Blackbird was still at the third bridge on the Riverdale Parkway. It was fascinating watching this bird use it's bill to pick leaves out of the mud and water and flip them back and forth looking for a meal.

Bryan Shirley (14 Feb 2004) - Today on our UT county birders trip we were successful in locating both the [Rusty] Blackbird & the Varied Thrush. The Thrush was about 100 yards up the road from Beus Pond in Logan. It was with a bunch of robins in the trees along the road, but they all flew across the road and down into the oak below the road.

Bill Fenimore (12 Feb 2004) - Bryan and Dennis Shirley, Milt Moody, Glenn Barlow, Merrill Webb and Bill Fenimore observed a female Rusty Blackbird along the Riverdale Parkway this morning. It was a first Utah sighting for all. Milt Moody was able to photograph the bird. Mort and Carolyn Somer spotted the bird first on Monday. Keith Evans, Jack Rensel and Mort Somer relocated it yesterday in the same area. They were unable to get a 100% ID but thought that it was either a Rusty Blackbird or a Great-tailed Grackle. Today's views enabled the observers to clinch the ID, as a Rusty Blackbird. To reach this area, take I-15 to Exit 342 Riverdale Road. Take Riverdale Road east to 700 West. Turn left (north) onto 700 West and go to 4400 South (approximately 2 blocks) and turn right. Follow this road until it dead ends (approximately 1/4 mile). The Riverdale Parkway runs alongside of the Weber River (on your right). Walk downstream (North) until the end of the walkway. You will cross two wooden foot bridges. When approaching the third and last wooden foot bridge watch for the bird on the East side of the walkway in the Russian Olives and near the water just east of the footbridge. It was with a flock of Robins.

Bill Fenimore (12 Feb 2004) - Bryan and Dennis Shirley, Milt Moody, Glenn Barlow, Merrill Webb and Bill Fenimore were able to relocate the male Varied Thrush that Bill Fenimore first observed Jan 17th at Beus Pond. It has been seen several times since and Mort Somer has photographed it. It is a beautifully plumaged, striking male. It was on the side of the hill just above the parking area, alongside of the entrance road to Beus Pond. To get to Beus Pond take Harrison Blvd., in Ogden to 42nd Street and go East on 42nd Street. The road winds itself around the Weber State University Campus. The entrance to Beus Pond is on the East side of the road (approximately 3/4 mile after turning East onto 42 Street).

Jan 2004

Jack (4 Jan 2004) - I made a short birding trip today. I had to have a hummingbird on my January list. As just reported the female Anna's is still going strong. She was buzzing around like it was summer.

Cliff Weisse (2 Jan 2004) - I drove over to Pleasant View today and the Anna's Hummingbird seems to have survived the storms just fine. I wasn't there much more than five minutes when I saw it hovering over an Aspen on the south side of the trail. It was very active and pretty soon it buzzed a House Finch driving it away. Later it chased off a Junco on it's way to the feeders. Neat bird. Sure seems out of place with all this snow.

Cliff Weisse (2 Jan 2004) - This afternoon I visited the Ogden Nature Center. As I approached the second feeder on the nature trail I saw an adult White-throated Sparrow. It flew off down the trail towards the first feeder. At the second feeder a few minutes later I saw a White-throated Sparrow approach from the opposite direction the first bird took. I think the second one was a different bird. It seemed like it had more intense yellow on it's head and bolder black outlining the white throat but I never saw both birds together so I'm not sure.

Dec 2003

Milton Moody (12 Dec 2003) - The Blue Jay and Anna's Hummingbird showed up at about 9 am in their usual area along with a dark Merlin. Alton Thygerson, Merrill Webb, Dennis Shirley and I were joined by Lee Shirley for this early-morning treat.

Jack (5 Dec 2003) - [Anna's Hummingbird] Well, it is still there. It is an Anna's of course, (thanks Mark). Mort Somer and I got some good looks at it from all angles. The house with the Blue Jay coming to it has a hummingbird feeder on the southwest corner, and the bird visits about every forty-five minutes or so. I took a bunch of pictures, but the light was not good so I am not sure if any turned out.

Nov 2003

Jack (30 Nov 2003) - How many of you have taken in your hummingbird feeders? While looking for the  Blue Jay today, Edson Leite and I saw a female Broad-tailed Hummingbird  flying around. We also got to see the jay, but a little advice for some. Do not stand talking on the trail thinking the jay will come around. Edson and I talked for an hour and a half before deciding to walk down the trail to see if we could find it. We only got 50 yards away and Edson heard it calling back at the feeder. We hurried back and got some good looks before it left.

Julie Van Moorhem (28 Nov 2003) - Cindy and Steve Sommerfeld, Dana Green and I ventured to Ogden today to see the Blue Jay that has been there the past few days. I was the only one who got to see it around 10 am. We got there at 9 and didn't leave until after Noon. The bird never came into the feeder while we were there. I spotted it on the south side of the street over one layer of houses from the street (3325 N.); about the time Steve got to where I was it flew. Close to noon we heard it calling, and it sounded like it was on the north (front) side of the house; however, it never came over to the side we were on--people next door were out in the front putting up lights so that may have scared it off.

Glenn Barlow (25 Nov 2003) - Well folks, the Blue Jay was present this morning also. Alton and I went a little earlier. As we settled into the curb, just west of 413 West 3325 North, and started looking around, Alton spied it on the left hand side of the street in front of us about 50 feet (by some children's play equipment). It was scared away by some magpies, but we spied it later on a telephone pole directly to the south of the play equipment and it a tree above us.

Glenn Barlow (24 Nov 2003) - On Sunday evening I received a telephone call from Bill Fenimore about a Blue Jay coming to a feeder in No. Ogden. The fellow call Bill at his Layton Wild Bird Center to report the sighting....This morning (Monday) I went to the place he described, arriving at 10:15 a.m.  At about 11 a.m. the bird showed up in the aspen trees below (and south) of his home. The man's name is Steven Federmann and he lives at 395 East 3350 North, in Lakeview Heights (North Ogden). The bird stayed briefly in the aspen trees below the deck, then flew south (to my left). ... On the left you will see a house with the address of 413 West 3325 North. Park on the right side of the street, just past that house, but east of the driveway on the right. On your right you will see a string of houses above you. There is a house with a group of aspens running east to west at the bottom of the property.  That is Steven Federmann's house....

Eric Huish (8 Nov 2003) - KC and I saw at least two Pacific Loons from the second turnout past the dam along Ut 39 overlooking Pineview Reservoir. There were also Common Loons in the area for comparison.

Paul Merola (7 Nov 2003) - Both myself and a fellow employee just saw a Blue Jay (cyanocitta cristata) at 150 N. Washington Bl, Ogden. ... He flew off but we are attempting to lure him back with some peanuts. First time I have ever seen one here in Utah.

Oct 2003

Kris Purdy (30 Oct 2003) - ... I saw the Lewis's Woodpecker again on a telephone pole in the 1500 block of Shadow Valley Drive in Ogden. The bird was working hard to excavate a pre-existing crack in the top of the pole. Small yellow woodchips peppered the snow at the base. I take this as a sign that the woodpecker is preparing a winter caching location for nuts and fruits and it's going to stick around. This is the fifth time I've seen it in the last 2 weeks or so.

Sep 2003

(14 Sept 2003) - Aaron Smith reported a female Hooded Warbler that responded to pishing on the South end of the loop trail at the North Arm of Pineview Reservoir. The location where he saw the warbler is where a tree has fallen onto a bench.

Aug 2003

Kris Purdy (9 Aug 2003) - I saw a Townsend's Warbler today on Skyline Trail that runs from the North Ogden Divide to Pineview Marina on Pineview Reservoir. I was 1-1/2 to 2 miles south of the Skyline trailhead and between 6500' and 7000' of elevation...

Mar 2003

Glenn Barlow, Kris Purdy - (Tue, 18 Feb 2003)  At Bues Pond we looked for the Screech Owl that Kris previously reported, but could not see it. But, I must make mention of the lovely 6-8 pairs of Wood Ducks, with the males in bright breeding plumage.

Kristin Purdy - (9 Feb 2003)  I saw the Western Screech Owl at Beus Pond off 4300S in Ogden today between 5:30 and 6:00 pm....

Bryan Shirley - (6 Feb 2003)  Today my dad & I birded in northern Ut and saw a few good birds. We started off in Ogden at the Ogden Nature Center where there is a White-throated Sparrow. ...

Joel & Kathy Beyer - (2 Feb 2003) ...  Both a Peregrine Falcon and a Prairie Falcon along 12th Street in Ogden, about 3 and 4 miles west of  I-15,  respectively.  A Lewis's Woodpecker in Pleasant View, on a telephone pole just before the entrance to Pole Patch Estates.  Eleven Least Sandpipers near mile marker 1 on the Antelope Island Causeway, south side.  Merlin, in Syracuse, near 3000 West and 2700 South (on top of a house).  Harris's Sparrow, on Gentile Street in Layton, seen about halfway between Bluff Street and WAM Flying Field (near the radio towers and Layton Marsh Preserve).  ...

Jan 2003

Leslie Loeffel - (Thu, 16 Jan 2003) ... Last Saturday my husband (Dave Deutch) and I saw a flock of rosy-finches in a tree just below the Hidden Lake Lodge at the top of Powder Mountain ski area. However, it was a brief look, and we weren't sure which type they were. Today (Jan.16) he went back and saw a definite Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch on the ground in the parking lot at Hidden Lake Lodge. ...Last Saturday we also saw a pair of Blue Grouse while cross country skiing about 1 1/2 miles from the Hidden Lake Lodge parking lot. There were tracks in the downhill ski area too, so it might be worth a look around.

December 2001

A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was seen in Pleasant View on Saturday, 12/29 (MS,LW) and on Tuesday, 01/01 (MS,DW). The bird was in a dead tree just west of the entrance to the Pole Patch development on 900 West, about 1 mile north of Main St.

May 2001

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was seen at a small pond at 2600 South 5100 West, west of Ogden, on Sunday, 05/06 (J&KB).

April 2001

A possible LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported from the west side of Ogden on Thursday, 04/05 (RW). The bird was seen only briefly, in a pond on the north side of 20th street, just west of Wall Ave.

February 2001

The VARIED THRUSH that was first sighted on 1/11 at the Ogden Nature Center, was sighted again on 1/17 (AC).

January 2001

A VARIED THRUSH was seen at the Ogden Nature Center on Thursday, 01/11 (L&PS). It was seen between the 2nd and 3rd feeders along the Plane City Canal. The Ogden Nature Center is just east of I-15 on 12th Street in Ogden.
