Carl Lundblad (13 May 2017) - [Grantsville Sewage Ponds] - Trumpeter Swan. I bumbled serendipitously into this bird in a hard to access and hard to view location, viewed behind a fence. Presumably the same individual reported elsewhere in NE Tooele County earlier this week. Photos shot through chain-link, and it was only by chance and great luck that it was visible at all. Not likely chase-able.
-- [Settlement Canyon] - Mallard, California Gull, Mourning Dove, Common Poorwill, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Northern Flicker (Red-shafted), Western Kingbird, Plumbeous Vireo, Black-capped Chickadee, House Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's), Chipping Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, House Finch, American Goldfinch

Colby Neuman (5 May 2017) - [Lakeside Preserve - private access] - Trumpeter Swan. A surprise to say the least. The bird was quite wary and eventually took off to the south and headed towards Stansbury Park...may be worth checking the Kennecott Ponds in case it shows itself there for SL County. First noticed large white waterbird with long neck. The size even for a swan seemed noticeably big. The white on the forehead came to a sharp V vs a broad U shape in Tundra Swan. More importantly the eye and black associated with bare skin and bill were one dark area as opposed to a Tundra Swan where the black area connecting the eye to the bill is narrow. While not conclusive, this bird also lacked the yellow dot on the bill that most Tundra Swans exhibit.

Tom Neuman (5 May 2017) - [Lakeside Preserve - private access] - Lark Bunting. All black bird with large white patch on the wings. Small grey conical beak. Good views through a scope.

Norm Jenson (4 Sep 2014) - (Clover Springs Campground) - A Clark's Nutcracker was a surprise.  There were several Black-throated Gray Warblers and probably 50 or 60 Yellow-rumped Warblers.  We did see two separate flocks of Pinyon Jays on Highway 199 between Rush Valley and the campground. There were other warblers but I was unable to identify them.  Have you ever noticed they never hold still. Here's our list:

Jun 2014

Keeli Marvel (16 Jun 2014) - [Rush Valley] -  went into work late today and made a quick stop on my way in to bird around the Clover Springs Campground up Johnson Pass (a few miles west of Rush Valley). Nothing completely out of the ordinary, but lots of really nice birds to see for such a quick stop. Complete list is below. Happy Birding!
--Red-tailed Hawk, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Western Kingbird, Plumbeous Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Mountain Bluebird, American Robin, Yellow Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Green-tailed Towhee, Spotted Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Lazuli Bunting,
Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch

Apr 2014

Darlene Stump (30 Apr 2014) - First of the year yard bird - Bullock's Oriole in Tremonton -
Love spring birding and breeding plumage!

Dennis Shirley (25 Apr 2014) - Yesterday I spent the afternoon in eastern Tooele County. Areas birded were Rush Lake, Mercer Canyon and bench lands, Fitzgerald WMA, and Vernon. Of the 50 or so species I saw, best were Sagebrush, Lark, and Black-throated Sparrows and Pinyon Jay along the foothills south of Mercer Canyon...

Darlene Stump (22 Apr 2014) - FOY Lazuli Bunting at our feeders today. A beautiful compliment to the colorful American Goldfinches that are here in large numbers. Also heard a Poorwill last night. A new yard bird for us.

Bryan Shirley (5 Apr 2014) - This morning 3 of us had a good morning in Tooele County. We started off in 5 mile pass with several singing Sagebrush Sparrows and Sage Thrashers. At Fitzgerald WMA we added about 30 species quickly - all of the common waterfowl was there, including about 40 RB Mergansers. There were a few migrant arrivals too like Avocets and Tree Swallows. Our next stop was Clover Springs Campground. Overall it was not very birdy, but we did see a couple of Belted Kingfishers, a small group of Bushtits and a Juniper Titmouse. Rush Lake is packed with several thousand ducks, but most were too far to see well...

Mar 2014

Candy Zaffis (27 Mar 2014) - I've been keeping track of when the Say's Phoebe arrive at a specific location on Dugway (since I arrived in Utah). It appears to be a little late this year (March 26) - LOL!
It's just a pretty little bird that gives me hope that Spring is really near. :-)

Feb 2014

Sylvia Gray (28 Feb 2014) - The Western Meadowlarks are singing on Stansbury Island. Bill and I also heard Chukars and a Rock Wren. Birds seen were: a beautiful male Mountain Bluebird, Northern Shrike, Northern Harrier, Raven and Junco. It was a lovely day to be out there.

Oct 2013

Oliver Hansen (5 Oct 2013) - This morning I was sitting in the stadium at Herriman High School at a band competition. A flock of maybe 1500-2000 Snow Geese flew over the stadium at about 11:30 am. Fun to see.

Aug 2013

Eric Huish (25 Aug 2013) - I birded Manning Canyon (Utah Co) and Ophir Canyon (Tooele Co) this morning. Manning Canyon has been closed for years while they cleaned up poisonous mine tailings. But now it is open again and freshly rehabilitated. Best sightings up the canyon were a couple of large flocks of Pinyon Jays, a couple of flocks if Bushtits, some Clark's Nutcrackers and a Gray Flycatcher. Full list below. Up Ophir Canyon I ran across a mixed flock of vireos and warblers up near the Lion Hill Loop Trailhead parking area. I couldn't ID them all but there were at least 3 Cassin's Vireos and a Nashville Warbler in the flock.

Oliver Hansen (21 Aug 2013) - Took a quick trip to Timpie Springs WMA and a little BLM area called Horseshoe springs in Skull Valley. Not very birdy but still a nice evening. Looks like the majority of the shorebirds have moved out. I did see one WILLET at horseshoe springs and one SOLITARY SANDPIPER at Timpie Springs. The PEREGRINES are still hanging out on the tower at Timpie springs. SAVANNA SPARROWS galore at both of these locations. Also several groups of 8-10 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were cruising really low at Horseshoe Springs. Very fun to see.

Jul 2013

Oliver Hansen (4 Jul 2013) - After the owling trip to Big Mountain Pass on Sunday I attempted to do some solo owling the next night in the Stansbury Range. You can drive up South Willow Canyon to about 7200 - feet right at the beginning of the Aspen/Pine zone. I drove around the Loop Campground and would turn off my car every couple hundred feet to listen for flammies (which are undocumented, as far as I know, in this range). ...  I'll have to go back to see if I can get close enough to call it a first sighting. I did for sure hear several COMMON POORWILLS flying around the rocky ridges in the area.

May 2013

Oliver Hansen (23 May 2013) - I hiked up West Canyon (directly west of Grantsville in Tooele Co) yesterday evening. Really gorgeous hike and so many great birds and flowers. I've included my checklists below. I was able to see about 10 new county birds including MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE, DUSKY FLYCATCHER, HERMIT THRUSH, BREWER'S SPARROW, and most suprising - a Burrowing Owl sitting on a fence post on my way out at about 9:00.

Oliver Hansen (1 May 2013) - I birded the area around Grantsville reservoir yesterday afternoon. Most interesting birds were a small "sunning" of DC CORMORANTS (10 or so) hanging out on the shores of the reservoir, a flock of about 20 LARK SPARROWS by the campground, LB CURLEWS all over the area, and just about every type of swallow cruising the water.

Apr 2013

Deedee O'Brien (24 Apr 2013) - While working on a raptor nest survey in the West Desert today Jack Clark and I saw many good birds - Western Kingbird in Faust, 1 LB Curlew; A. Pipits, Bluebird,  a very bright Audubon's Warbler, and a few swallows - N. Rough-winged and Tree, a Juniper Titmouse, Sage Thrasher, lots of Horned Larks and Western Meadowlarks, my 1st Brown-headed Cowbirds of the year on ground next to a cow...

Oliver Hansen (12 Apr 2013) - Went back out to Timpie springs tonight at sunset. A colony of Cliff Swallows has set up camp on the overpass at the Timpie springs exit. Glad they found their way back from Argentina. I walked out on the dike quite a ways and was able to a lot of the same birds as earlier in the week: AVOCETS, WILLETS, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, PELICANS, and an assortment of TEALS and other duck species. There was a PERIGRINE FALCON hanging out on a big structure with some sort of water tower thing on the top...

Eric Huish (13 Apr 2013) - This morning there was a White-winged Dove cooing away at the mouth of Ophir Canyon in Tooele Co. I turned around and found the dove in the top of a tree.

Oliver Hansen (12 Apr 2013) - There are 15+ Turkey Vultures continuing to use the large Cottonwood trees on the corner of West and Main in Grantsville. I have seen them 3 or 4 times this week.

Oliver Hansen (4 Apr 2013) -  I was with some people botanizing (yes it's a word) yesterday on Stansbury Island and also went back today to hike up to the high point on the island. ROCK WRENS and W. MEADOWLARKS galore. Also, flushed a few CHUKAR. There were also 30+ AVOCETS and a handful of B-N STILTS in some of the evaporation ponds right off of the exit to the island on I-80...

Oliver Hansen (4 Apr 2013) - Was at Clover Springs campground (west of Rush Valley) this morning. Mountain Bluebirds, Towhees, Juniper Titmice, and a few other normal species I've been seeing up that canyon. The best surprise was seeing 4 RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS...

Eric Huish (1 Apr 2013) - I drove out to Tooele yesterday for a family get-together.  So of course I birded on my way out and on my way back. Stopped at Ophir Canyon where I found Juniper Titmice, Bushtits, Pinyon Jay, Mountain Bluebirds, Clark's Nutcrackers and heard singing Canyon Wrens...

Mar 2013

Oliver Hansen (15 mar 2013) - The Jensen's joined me on scouting out some locations for the trip I have planned for next week. Here are some highlights and updates:
--Stansbury Park: A male Wood Duck gave us some great looks while preening on a log. Hundreds of cal. gulls were going crazy in the mill ponds. ... We couldn't pick out any rare ones.
--Rush Lake: Probably between 2 and 5 thousand ducks (most were on the wrong side of the lake and a little hard to ID) It seemed that most were Pintails, Redheads, and Wigeons.
--Rush Valley (town): As we rode into town I mentioned "See that tree up there, every time I drive past it I think to myself that it looks like a tree you would see a Great horned owl in, but I never see one." Low and behold, there was a Great Horned Owl in it.
--James Fitzgerald WMA: Lots of lingering winter waterfowl: Common Mergansers, Tundra Swans, Buffleheads, Goldeneyes (common), and all the other usual ducks. No shorebirds yet (except a few killdeer).
--Road to Ophir: A single Pinyon Jay.

Oliver Hansen (2 Mar 2013) - Went snow-shoeing up Vickory Mountain (Tooele County) it was way too warm, but I was being stubborn and post-holed up 1500' the ridge and made it about 2 miles up (it's 4.5 to the top). Birds seen: CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS, JUNIPER TITMOUSE, RAVEN, JUNCO, GOLDEN EAGLE. A NORTHERN PYGMY OWL was sitting in a tree a few hundred yards south down from Clover Springs on my drive down the canyon. I put a small pile of rocks where it was seen if anyone in Tooele County wanted to go looking for it.

Feb 2013

Oliver Hansen (18 Feb 2013) - On the way home from a meeting in Tooele there was a beautiful adult male Golden Eagle posing on a telephone pole near the Deseret Peak complex.

Jan 2013

Oliver Hansen (12 Jan 2013) - Really psyched that looking through thousands of horned larks in the county during the past few weeks finally paid off today. About 4 miles south of I-80 on the Skull Valley Road (road that connects Dugway to I-80) I had a very cooperative group of about 100-150 Horned Larks that were feeding on some grass poking up through the snow on the side of the road. I was able to look at them through my scope from about 20-30 yards away for nearly 30 minutes. I'm pretty sure I looked at every single individual. One was for sure a LAPLAND'S LONGSPUR.

Oliver Hansen (11 Jan 2013) - I have been wanting to go look for owls again in the county since my last try in Ophir Canyon was a bust. I was in Tooele this evening doing some shopping and before heading home, around 9pm or so, and decided to try a spot I've driven past during the day several times. ...I parked the car, turned off the keys, and no more than 15 seconds after stepping out into the snow I heard a Great Horned Owl calling. Crazy!... GH Owl was my 57th bird for the county so far this year.

Weston Smith (7 Jan 2013) - I saw two Common Redpolls near the salt plant north of Grantsville feeding on the seeds at the top of the bushes in the area about noon today the 7th.  ... Also I am still getting Common Redpolls everyday at my house in Croydon (Morgan County).

Oliver Hansen
(1 Jan 2013) - 30+ species in a couple hours of birding this morning. Best birds were 3 Hooded Mergansers @ Stansbury Park Lake - 1 male and 2 females. Tons of Ferruginous Hawks out this morning in Tooele county.

Dec 2012

Oliver Hansen (28 Dec 2012) - 17 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches in South Willow Canyon today along with a huge flock of turkeys. The paved section of the road in the canyon is plowed during the winter.

Oliver Hansen (4 Dec 2012) - Finally took an afternoon to explore the miles and miles of telephone pole and fence-lined roads north of Grantsville. Biggest highlights of the afternoon were three  Ferruginous Hawks and a Loggerhead Shrike. Two new birds for my County list.

Oct 2012

Candy Zaffis (18 Oct 2012) - Tonight, a female Evening Grosbeak and male Common Grackle were at the yard birdfeeders on Dugway.

Candy Zaffis (11 Oct 2012) - [Dugway, UT] - Today, 10 Oct 12, at noon, I was watching a Spotted Towhee foraging in some bushes/shrubs behind my work buildings, when out popped a BROWN THRASHER.  It looked at me with those yellow eyes then flew off to some denser shrubs farther back from the road.

Keeli Marvel
(9 Oct 2012)- I spotted an Ovenbird while heading out to do some field work today at
Dugway. It was walking around on the ground under a tree just off a main road.

Sep 2012

Ryan P. O'Donnell (10 Sep 2012) - This weekend I traveled to the Dugway area to help a friend with some mammal studies there. While in the town of Dugway, I found an adult male VERMILION FLYCATCHER near his house. According to eBird, this is the first county record for Tooele County, and the fourth record of this species in Utah outside of Washington County...

Oliver Hansen (10 Sep 2012) - Getting lots of Common Night Hawks here in Tooele Co. I'm sad that fall is coming. The dozens of Swainson's hawks on just about every telephone pole around here will be heading out soon in sometime in the next month.

Jul 2012

Norm Jenson (28 Jul 2012) - [Ophir Canyon] - It was a four hummingbird day yesterday [Black-chinned, Broad-tailed, Rufous, and Calliope]  thanks to the nice lady at 93 Ophir Canyon Road who has 6 or 7 feeders and hundreds of hummers...

Jun 2012

Candy Zaffis (16 Jun 2012) - We've been seeing an almost pure white Eurasian Collared Dove for the last couple weeks in our yard...We have also been seeing a white House Sparrow, but haven't got a photo of it yet. I see no pigment at all, so it may be an albino.

Mar 2012

Candy (6 Mar 2012) - The first flycatcher of the year continues to be the Say's Phoebe for me at Dugway.

Feb 2012

Eric Huish (20 Feb 22012) - Last night, while driving home from Tooele, I made a stop at Fairfield around 8:00 pm... I crossed the hwy and drove into the Fairfield Cemetery.... From there I could hear them much better and I realized they where Long-eared Owls. At least 3 different owls making a single hoot call...

Jun 2011

Candy Zaffis (4 Jun 2011) - [Dugway] a male Red-breasted Grosbeak flew into my neighbors window yesterday.   They went outside and protected it until it recovered and flew away safely. This Grosbeak had been seen at the feeders the day before.

May 2011

Candy (31 May 2011) - A co-worker saw a male Northern Cardinal yesterday morning at her feeder in Tooele. 30 May around 8am. She loves Cardinals and is SURE that is what she saw and now has a camera ready in case it returns. Location: Oquirrh Ave and N 7th St. There is also Oquirrh Hills Golf Course and Elton Park in that vicinity.

Candy (16 May 2011) - The White-faced Ibis were showing the soldiers on Dugway how to get into formation correctly....  LOL.

Apr 2011

Candy (9 Apr 2011) - This morning I had a male and female Common Grackle visit the yard.  I was able to get a picture of the male on the feeder thru a dirty window - not the best photo but it is identifiable.

Mar 2011

Dave Hanscom (30 Mar 2011 - Took a trip up to Faust Valley to see if I could find the Short-eared Owls reported by Kris Purdy about a month ago.  No luck on that, but I did find three Long-billed Curlews hanging around the fields.  No surprise on the owls with all the pipeline work going on.  They're still burying pipe, so there's lots of commotion.

Candy (17 Mar 2011) - There was a lone Tree Swallow flying around in Dugway this morning.

Eric Huish (14 Mar 2011) - I drove out to Tooele yesterday. In the morning, on my way out, I stopped at Ophir Canyon and Rush Lake. On my way back, near sunset, I stopped at James Walter Fitzgerald WMA. Highlights in Ophir Canyon were 6 species of Corvid (best were Pinyon Jays and Clark's Nutcracker), a Hairy Woodpecker, a Cassin's Finch and a singing Canyon Wren. Rush Lake was full of waterfowl but much of it was two distant to identify from my vantage point. There were a couple of Bald Eagles there. Highlights at J.W. Fitzgerald WMA were a Red-breasted Merganser, a dozen Canvasback, my first Sage Thrasher of the year and a Great Horned Owl in the trees by the house on the corner of UT-36 and Pony Express Rd.

Feb 2011

Eric Huish (22 Feb, 2011) - I birded a few stops on my way to visit family in Tooele on Sunday. Best birds were a flock of almost 50 Evening Grosbeaks in Middle Canyon, East of Tooele. I hiked past the road-closed-for-winter gate and first saw the grosbeak flock about .4 mile past the gate then again closer to the gate. Didn't see many other birds in the canyon.

May 2010

oel and Kathy Beyer (24 May 2010) - A Northern Waterthrush was seen along the stream at Clover Springs today. An additional 35 species were seen here (4 flycatchers, 6 warblers, solitaire, tanagers, tanagers, tanagers, etc.)
Earlier this morning, on our Grantsville BBS, we had 3 Northern Mockingbirds (the most in 10 years of doing the survey).

R Francom (18 May 2010) - Watched (3) Caspian Terns on Grantsville Reservoir 5/17/10 just before dusk, aggressively chasing gulls out of the area.

Feb 2010

Ned Bixler (26 Feb 2010) - [Rush Valley] Road 199 to Dugway. Red-tailed Hawk; American Kestrel; Prairie Falcon; Western Scrub-Jay; Common Raven; American Robin; European Starling; House Finch.

Eric Huish (14 Feb 2010) -  [Ophir Canyon] - Chukar, heard only.  Great Horned Owl, Mostly heard only. Northern Saw-whet Owl - heard at least one at cemetery and got very close to at least one about 1 mile up canyon from cemetery. Juniper Titmouse. Canyon Wren, heard only. ...

Oct 2009

Candy Zaffis (4 Oct 2009) - After the storms this morning, a young 1st year male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stopped by the feeders... He stayed for several hours this afternoon, and posed for many good photos.

On 12 Sep 09, I had an Abert's Towhee in my back?yard.??The Towhee was alone and was very interested in my red Canna flowers.? It totally ignored the seed feeders and suet.? When a flock of Collared Doves flew into the yard, it flew away.? I got a good look for about a minute, then grabbed the camera and got one bad photo thru a dirty, screened window.? I haven't seen an Abert's before in this area, and it has not re-visited.

Sep 2009

Candy Zaffis (3 Sep 2009) - That is funny. I also have a White-winged Dove. It has been here about a week. It is sitting on the back fence right now with some collared doves.

May 2009

Colby Neuman (31 May 2009) - ... a second year male AMERICAN REDSTART was singing at Rabbit Springs (Box Elder County - near Lucin) yesterday.

Apr 2009

Candy Zaffisc (26 Apr 2009) - I last time I saw a White-winged Dove in my yard on Dugway on 20 May 2007. And I just saw one a few minutes ago. Very cool!! I got a good 3-4 minute view in binocs of the beautiful blue eye-ring and white on the leading edge of its wings.

May 2008

Colby Neuman (26 May 2008) - Jeff Bilsky and I headed out to some of the migrant traps of the west desert from Saturday through Monday. ...Highlights from the weekend included  - 5/24/08 - ... Private Ranch (north of Wendover) South Trees... 1 Gray Catbird - 1 Northern Waterthrush... 5/25/08 - Private Ranch South Trees - 1 American Redstart - 2nd year male...

Candy (15 May 2008) - I had a male Common Grackle visit the yard feeders this afternoon. I had one who visited 2 years ago in May and stayed for a couple weeks. I wonder if it is the same bloke.

May 2007

Candy (20 May 2007) - A single White-winged Dove joined a group of 5 Mourning Doves and 3 Eurasian Collared Doves this evening.  This is the 2nd time I've seen one on Dugway, and this time it stayed around long enough for some decent pictures. Just never know who is going to show up for dinner...

Jan 2007

Nate and Stephen Nye (1 Jan 2007) - My Dad and I went out to Tooele this afternoon to look for the Northern Shrike... We eventually found the Northern Shrike in the area reported by James McKay yesterday. We searched all up and down Mormon Trail Rd. in the area it had been seen, but with no luck. We were about to head home when we decided to head up a dirt road to the east off of Mormon Trail Road for one last shot. Sure enough, it flew up and landed on top of a juniper not far off the track... The turnoff for this dirt road T's off at about 0.2 miles south of mile marker 9 (which is almost exactly 6.5 miles north of Meadow Ln.)...

Dec 2006

Tim Avery (30 Dec 2006) - This morning while helping out on the Tooele CBC I had some interesting sightings. ...a Northern Shrike... and the other prize of the morning, a Snow Bunting...The bunting was with a flock of about 80 Horned Larks and was initially seen flying....

Oct 2006

Candy Zaffis (27 Oct 2006) - A beautiful male Varied Thrush was hopping around in the front yard [Dugway] this afternoon. I wonder if it's the same guy as last year. Last year's Varied showed up on Oct 9th and visited on/off until the middle of January. If it's the same Thrush, he's a few weeks late this year.  The usual yard birds are here: House finches, pine siskens, brown creepers, killdeer, flickers, downy's, a daily flock of about 15 Eurasian Collared-Doves, a couple hermit thrushes (3 were exploring the Jeep this morning -- odd), ravens, starlings and house sparrows galore (unfortunately), mourning doves and one Band-tailed Pigeon.

Candy Zaffis (24 Oct 2006) - When I got home from work at 6pm, I had a single White-throated Sparrow visit my back yard feeder [Dugway] . It was the tan-stripped morph. It stayed on the ground for about 5 minutes affording a good view, and a couple photos, before it flew away when a couple deer walked by.

Sep 2006

Candy (at Dugway) (22 Sep 2006) - I had to share another lifer today... my first Winter Wren arrived in the front yard. It was poking around the tires of my Jeep, while I watched it for 10 minutes. This bird is also NOT listed on the Dugway Bird checklist.

Joel and Kathy Beyer (4 Sep 2006) - Late this afternoon we found a female Indigo Bunting at Clover Springs Campground (Tooele Co.), in the bushes at the springs.

Aug 2006

Tuula Rose (28 Aug 20006) - Eric Huish just called me ( Monday, Aug 28, 1:00 PM) to report that earlier this morning around 10:00 AM he stopped at Clover Springs Campground in Tooele County on the way to Dugway. He saw a first winter Chestnut-sided Warbler and a Northern Waterthrush in the campground, right by the springs and later down farther by the parking lot...

Candy Zaffis (18 Aug 2006) -  I also had a new yard bird this morning [Dugway] -- one White-winged Dove. It was casually eating with the mourning doves and Eurasian Collared-Doves. Hopefully it'll be back for a photo-op.

Jun 2006

Joel Beyer (11 Jun 2006) - Kathy and I found a Least Tern this afternoon at J.W.Fitzgerald WMA (a.k.a. Faust Reservoir) on Hwy 36 in Tooele Co. It's small size was really accentuated by the Caspian Tern that was flying nearby. Also seen in Tooele Co...We saw a Eurasian Collared Dove in Grantsville, on West Street, 1/2 block south of the cemetery. Several Greater Scaup were on Clover Reservoir (near the junction of Hwys 138 & 199 at Rush Valley).

May 2006

Candy Zaffis (5 May 2006) - Since the Grackle isn't listed on the Dugway birdlist, I thought I should mention that I had a Common Grackle visit at least twice today. It came along with a huge flock of cowbirds. Have only seen the one so far.

Mar 2006

Glenn B. Barlow (25 Mar 2006) - On Thursday, March 23rd, Merrill Webb and I attempted a Bid Day in Tooele County, with a goal of seeing at least 60 species....At Walter Fitzgerald we were greeted by many water fowl, including Bufflehead, but no Ruddy Duck. Below the dike we found a lone American Tree Sparrow...At the Vernon Reservoir we were surprised to find a wintering Bonaparte’s Gull! What a pleasant surprise.

Oct 2005

Candy Zaffis (9 Oct 2005) - I was watching ... the front yard [Dugway Proving Grounds] ...this morning at 10:30am, when this larger bird landed ...It was a Varied Thrush -- the first one I've ever seen. What a beautiful adult male specimen. He stayed for about 15 minutes allowing me to get a wonderful look at him. This has been a week for Thrushes, because I've had a little Hermit Thrush in the yard catching moths for at least a week. ...Utah is turning out to be an interesting place to live - for a birder.

Sep 2005

Steve Carr (23 Sep 2005) - There is a good sized, shallow pond about 3/4 mile south of the intersection of highways 36 and 199. There are 2 adult Sabine's Gulls in non-breeding plumage flying back and forth over the pond, and settling down on the water from time to time. You can't miss them because they are the only gulls in the area. Also seen were 3 Solitary Sandpipers at the south edge, 2 Dowitchers, 3 Wilson's Snipes, numerous Western and Baird's Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, Osprey and a herd of Antelope...

Jack Binch (23 Sep 2005) - I was sitting in my car watching the field ...and noticed a Turkey Vulture flying toward me low across the field on the north. It crossed the road and then hovered like a kestrel. Wait a minute that is not a vulture. It now had my attention and I followed it with the binoculars. It dove on a hawk sitting on a fence post and out came the bright yellow legs. YES, a Zone-tailed Hawk. My first one ever and #300 for the year. It was 11:00 am and by the green field a mile or so west of the intersection of 36 & 199. When you find the dead skunk by the side of the road you are there.

Nov 2003

KC Childs (29 Nov 2003) - Eric Huish and I ran out to do some birding in Tooele County today. At Stansbury Park there was a Ross's and Snow Goose hanging out near the Tennis courts and Golf Club House. They were on the grass near the lake. They were with a good sized flock of Canada Geese. There was also a Great Horned Owl in Faust.

Sep 2003

Carol Gwynn (9 Sept 2003) - ...the Reddish Egret again. Glen and Donna Thorum and Carol Gwynn made the trek out to J.W. Fitzgerald WMA in Tooele County this afternoon to see this bird. It was still there, and the Great Egret was also back.

Eric Huish (8 Sept 2003) - There was a Northern Waterthrush at Clover Springs under the first fallen tree down from the spring. There was lots of bird activity around the spring and many sparrows and warblers in the field of rabbit brush bellow the camping area.  The Reddish Egret is still at JWFWMA.

Jack Binch (5 Sept 2003) - I have regretted not going to Gunlock Res. for the past month. Thanks to Milton and Merrill, I don't have to any more. The Reddish Egret was still at J. W. Firzgerald WMA this morning at 8:00.

Eric Huish (4 Sept 2003) - KC, Alton and I ran out to Tooele County this morning. The Reddish Egret is still at James Walter Fitzgerald WMA with a Great Egret. We could not relocate the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Milton Moody (3 Sept 2003) - Merrill Webb and I were going to Harker Canyon in Tooele County today and decided to stop by at James Walter Fitzgerald WMA to see what was there. We saw a juvenile Reddish Egret (amazingly enough), very similar to the one at Gunlock Reservoir. (Is that one still there? We're pretty sure it's a different individual). There were also Red-necked Phalaropes and Baird's and Western Sandpiper, and a bunch of pelicans.
We then went to Harker Canyon (south of Vernon in the Sheeprock Mountains), and, (amazingly enough) we saw a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. We got some good looks at it but couldn't get any photos despite a pretty good effort

Apr 2003

August 2002

Jack Binch - (Sat, 3 Aug 2002)  I found a hot spot near Stockton today. Got there at about 10:00 and there were birds everywhere in an old field. Many western kingbirds, many Lark Sparrows, chipping sparrows, several sparrows that I could not identify. A blue-gray gnatchatcher, a small flycatcher (gray?), sage thrasher, lazuli buntings, and finally a Black-throated gray Warbler (many)

March 2002

KC Childs - (Thu, 28 Mar 2002) I know that this owl is supposedly common, but it is only my second sighting of one, so I am going to post it. The Great Horned Owl was at the Mormon Church in Vernon. It was in what looked to be a Ponderosa Pine on the Southeast side of the parking lot. He was sitting in the large nest. It is the only pine with a nest in it. Also saw plenty of Red Breasted Mergansers, and Eared Grebes at James Walter Fitzgerald WMA.
