BOX ELDER COUNTY

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen near the northwest corner of the auto tour loop at BRMBR on Monday, 1/17. On that same day, at BRMBR, two SHORT-EARED OWLS, several NORTHERN SHRIKES, and several HERRING GULLS were also seen (KE, AS).


CACHE COUNTY On Monday, 1/17, approximately 10 pairs of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, and one pair of HOODED MERGANSERS were seen at Canyon Entrance Park at the mouth of Logan Canyon (J&KB).

A MERLIN was seen on Monday, 1/17, just north of Mendon, along SR23 (J&KB).


DAVIS COUNTY At FBWMA, a PEREGRINE FALCON and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW were seen on Tuesday, 1/18 (DG).


MORGAN COUNTY Two HARRIS'S SPARROWS, one adult and one immature, have been seen intermittently over the past month at the Morgan Wastewater Treatment Ponds. The most recent sighting was of the immature bird on the morning of Sunday, 1/16 (AS).


SALT LAKE COUNTY A MERLIN was sighted along Sunnyside Avenue, just west of Foothill Boulevard, on Sunday, 1/16 (J&KB).

In City Creek Canyon, on Saturday, 1/15, a WESTERN SCREECH OWL was seen at picnic area 3 (DG). The bird was north of the table in a hole near the top of a broken off tree, and was sighted again on Sunday, 1/16 (J&KB). Also reported in City Creek Canyon on both 1/15 and 1/16, were GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS (J&KB, DG). Plus a WINTER WREN was seen between picnic areas 5 and 6 in City Creek Canyon on Saturday, 1/15 (KH, YS).

On Thursday, 1/20 and Friday, 1/21, two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were seen on the Jordan River Parkway Trail, just north of 3900 South. Also on the Jordan River Parkway trail, north of 3300 South, a male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE was seen on Friday, 1/21. This bird was reported to be near the location where a pair of Great-tailed Grackles nested last year (JH).


SAN JUAN COUNTY The CANYON TOWHEE which was first seen at the Hatch Trading Post, southeast of Blanding, two weeks ago was seen again on Wednesday, 1/12. The bird was again seen in the brush along the fence on the west side of the parking area with a flock of White-crowned Sparrows (TS). Hatch Trading Post is located about 14 miles east of US 191 on Hovenweep Road which leads to Hovenweep National Monument. Please respect the owner's wishes by only birding outside the perimeter of Hatch Trading Post property.


UTAH COUNTY Two SNOW GEESE and several YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were seen with about 200 Canada Geese in a plowed wheat field east of the Provo Airport on Thursday, 1/20 (BM).

On Tuesday, 1/18, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the southwest corner of the Provo Airport dike (CP), and this bird was seen again in the same location on Thursday, 1/20 (CB).


WASHINGTON COUNTY Another RED-SHOULDERED HAWK has been sighted in southwestern Utah. This bird is an immature, and was first seen on Sunday, 1/16, approximately 4 1/2 miles west of Enterprise in the Shoal Creek Valley (S&PS). This same bird was again sighted in the same area on Wednesday, 1/19 (JK). Up to 18 LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS have been seen about 10 miles west of Enterprise, near Terry Ranch, in the past week (JK, S&PS). In the same area, two NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen on Sunday, 1/16 (S&PS). Also seen west of Enterprise on Wednesday, 1/19, was a juvenile GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW (JK).

The HARRIS'S SPARROW that was first found in Santa Clara on the Christmas Bird Count, was located again on Saturday, 1/15. And at Ivins Reservoir on the same day, there were 41 HOODED MERGANSERS (JK, S&PS).


WEBER COUNTY One BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen with a flock of Bushtits by Rainbow Gardens at the mouth of Ogden Canyon on Monday, 1/17 (KE, AS).
