BOX ELDER COUNTY

A first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (BRMBR) on Wednesday, 01/06, near the northwest corner of the auto-tour loop (CW). It was seen again on Saturday, 01/09, along with a first-winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL in the same area (MS,MT, many obs.). The birds were amongst thousands of other gulls, including Thayer's, Herring, California and Ring-billed Gulls.

A female Richardson's MERLIN was seen along the road to BRMBR on Saturday, 01/09 (MS, many obs.), about 3 miles west of I-15.


CACHE COUNTY Three HOODED MERGANSERS, including one male, were on the pond at first dam in Logan on Monday, 01/04 (BA).

Five LONG-EARED OWLS were at a roost east of Mendon on Sunday, 01/03. The roost was first discovered during the Logan Christmas Bird Count on 12/19 (BA).


GARFIELD COUNTY A flock of about 50 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen outside of Boulder on Friday, 01/01, along the Escalante River about 1 mile downstream from the bridge, near Calf Creek (MV).


SALT LAKE COUNTY The ROSS' GOOSE, which has been at the International Center west of the Salt Lake International Airport, was still there as of Saturday, 01/09. The bird is in the pond behind the Airport Hilton Hotel, in amongst numerous Mallards and domestic geese (MS, many obs.).

A HARRIS' SPARROW was seen again near the entrance to Dimple Dell Park from 1300 East in Sandy on Saturday, 01/02 (KB).

A GREATER SCAUP was at the Salt Lake City Wastewater Treatment Plant on Wednesday, 01/06 (JVM). The plant is located on 2300 North just east of Redwood Rd.

A MERLIN was seen at 11800 South and 8400 West on Monday, 01/04 (BO). Another MERLIN was seen west of the International Center along the I-80 frontage road on Wednesday, 01/06 (JVM).

At least 5 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were in a large flock of blackbirds and starlings at a feed lot at the corner of 2200 West and Cudahy Lane in North Salt Lake on Wednesday, 01/06 (JVM). They were seen again on Saturday, 01/09 (MS, many obs.).


UTAH COUNTY A FIELD SPARROW was found at the Lindon Boat Harbor on Saturday, 01/09 (MW). It was seen again by many observers on Sunday, 01/10. The bird has been in a mixed flock with juncos, Tree Sparrows and Song Sparrows in the brush and small wood lot to the east and south of the boat harbor parking lot. The boat harbor is located on Utah Lake just west of the Geneva Steel Plant. This is the first legitimate record of Field Sparrow in Utah.

Two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen along S.R. 68 (Redwood Rd.), west of Utah Lake, near the entrance to Mosida Ranch on Saturday, 01/09 (DS).


WASATCH COUNTY BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen with some Cedar Waxwings along the Provo River just below the Deer Creek Dam on Saturday, 01/09 (MW).


WEBER COUNTY A flock of about 25 RED CROSSBILLS was seen in the Ogden Cemetery on Wednesday, 01/06. Two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were also seen at the cemetery (KE,JR,MSo, others). On Saturday, 01/09, 5 Red Crossbills were seen in the cemetery (C&MSo). Ogden Cemetery can be reached by taking 20th East from Washington Blvd.

The LEWIS' WOODPECKERS which have been seen in the trees at the gate on 900 West in Pleasant View were still there on Saturday, 01/09, when two birds were seen (MS, many obs.).

Two BLUE JAYS continue to be regular visitors to a feeder at the first house on the left, through the gate, on 900 West in Pleasant View as of Friday, 01/08 (IP).
