As the new editor of Utah Birds, I welcome submissions to future issues of the journal. The structure of the journal has been re-organized, and a new format will be introduced with the next issue, due out in the spring of 2003. Submissions can be in the form of one of the following categories.
   As before, the scope of the journal is primarily the birds of Utah, but relevant submissions from adjacent regions of other states are welcome. The journal will be published twice a year. Submission deadlines are: January 1 for the spring issue, and July 1 for the fall issue.
    Instructions for authors can be found in back issues of the journal, or can be obtained by contacting the editor or manuscript editor. The manuscript editor is:

EDITORIAL: discussions of upcoming events, important regional and national news, guest editorials on ongoing efforts in conservation and science. Contact the editor prior to submission.

ARTICLES: manuscripts of various lengths on the birds of Utah and immediately adjacent areas of surrounding states, reporting original summaries of research, unusual or significant new findings and other relevant aspects of bird biology. Articles can vary in length from long papers presenting original research to short (1-2 page) notes on new sightings or breeding records, or other interesting aspects of bird biology. Submit to the manuscript editor.

REPORTS: summaries of on-going inventory and monitoring work, including results of Christmas bird counts, USFWS breeding bird routes, MAPS and other mist-netting stations, waterfowl and shorebird surveys, endangered and special
status species surveys and monitoring, and regional inventory and monitoring efforts. Reports can summarize field data, or discuss new inventory and monitoring initiatives. Submit to the manuscript editor.

SCIENCE ROUNDUP: reviews of recent advances in ornithology relevant to Utah birds and birders. Contact the editor prior to submission.

BOOK AND MEDIA REVIEWS: contact the editor prior to doing a review.

UTAH BIRDING SPOTS: short articles, with maps if necessary, summarizing birding areas of interest to the birder community, with information on species, best times of year, weather, and location. Submit to the manuscript editor.
