Chess Club News

  January 2017

Here are a few upcoming events to put on your calendar:

1) Girls Only Chess Day on Tuesday, February 7th--Calling all girls to join us for a fun girls-only chess day! We will meet on Tuesday, February 7th, 3:20-4:00 pm, in the cafeteria. Bring your friends and have a great time with other girls, either playing chess or learning how to play chess. No cost. No experience needed. See you then!

2) Morning chess class begins on Friday, February 10th, in the faculty room from 8:00-8:30 a.m. The class will be held each Friday morning from February 10th to March 17th. Local chess expert, Milt Moody, will lead us through some of history's most famous chess games. The instruction will focus on tactics and strategy as we prepare for the State Chess tournament on March 18th. This instruction would benefit every player in chess club, regardless of level. I hope your child will join us, whether or not he or she is planning on attending the state tournament.

3) 2017 State Elementary Chess Tournament on Saturday, March 18--This year the tournament will be held right here on BYU campus! I hope that many of you will take advantage of this great opportunity. It is an all-day event, but it is also a fantastic experience to play chess with hundreds of other kids. The chess club will provide a pizza lunch for all participants. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Click here for registration and more information.

4) And just FYI, there will be no Chess Club held on February 8th due to the early-out schedule for SEP conferences, nor on April 5th due to Spring Break.

Chess Resources for Our Club:

Chesskid.com--This is a fantastic resource for your kids to use at home with lessons, instructional videos, chess puzzles, and opportunities to play chess games with other kids. Everyone will have the chance once a month to work on chesskid during chess club time, so please make sure your child knows how to log-on.

       1) Go to https://www.chesskid.com
       2) Find Log In in the upper right corner
       3) Your child's user name is RockCanyon followed by your child's first name and last initial. For
             example--RockCanyonCalebC
       4) The password for all new accounts is: roadrunner

Once your child is logged-in, she can go to "Settings" to change her password and avatar picture. If desired, you can set up your own parent account. If you do this, just let me know and I will connect you to your child's account. Let me know if anyone has problems getting started.
Rock Canyon Chess webpage--Coach Milt (who teaches our morning class) has set up a webpage for our chess club at http://utahbirds.org/roadrunners. It is designed to help the members of the Rock Canyon Chess Club develop their chess skills by providing access to the chess games we have studied over the years in preparation for the state chess tournament. There is a library of over 30 famous games that you can play move by move, along with notes to help you study the reasons behind each move. This is a valuable resource--check it out!

Thanks,
Mary Elizabeth Christensen

P.S. Although as a group we will only be participating in the state tournament on March 18, there are several good scholastic tournaments available between now and then that would be great preparation for the state tournament. Click here for the calendar of upcoming scholastic events.
