Fellow Birders -
It has been suggested that an owl prowl under the full
moon on Friday, July 2nd, might be kind of fun. I agree! Loosely,
this is what I am thinking. We'll head up towards East Canyon around 7:00
p.m. and look for a Northern Pygmy Owl while we still have a little bit of
daylight. Then when it gets dark, we'll try for a Northern Saw-whet and
Flammulated Owl. Although I don't really know for sure, I suspect it might
be around midnight when we return home. There could be a little bit of
moderate walking involved, but I think we'll mostly see what we can do from
roadside pullouts.
I have it on good authority that all three of these owls have
been seen through the years in this area; however, there have been no reported
sightings this year. I suspect this is more due to the fact that people
have not been out looking in this area rather than the owls not being
there. The habitat is certainly right. I have not scouted the area
at night to try to find the owls, but have only been during the day to study the
habitat and locate some areas where we can safely look. So, it's a crap
shoot.
If you would like to go, please call me at 272-2755.
Depending on the weather and how many are interested, we'll make a decision in a
few days.
