SS, Ferruginous and Red-tailed Hawks

The SS ate half the dove then flew off with the rest. I was able to get a photo from the house without bothering it. It's actually a subadult (golden eyes). The other dove is still on the patio and I'm hoping the SS will come back for it tomorrow so I can get a closer shot from the house. They have crazy eyes, don't you think.

Yesterday we went looking for the darn N. Shrike at Chimney Rock. A bunch of people with shotguns were roaming through the sage - and what looked like a ten year old boy shooting a rifle at the rocks just before Chimney Rock (didn't your Daddy tell you that would cause the bullet to ricochet and hit you in the eye?) So, no Shrike. We followed that road over to Cedar Fort and saw 3 large herds of Antelope. Don't go on that road past Chimney Rock until the road freezes or dries out. The mud was up to our axles and we thought we would be camping out with just Saltines and Diet Cola for sustenance. Saw one of those gorgeous gray, male N. Harriers over there, though.

By Mona we got a good shot of a beautiful Ferruginous, light morph with light markings and another shot of a Ferruginous light morph with dark leggings (that was kinda' far away). I don't think I've ever seen one with the dark leggings before.

We also found a cooperative, unblemished Red-tailed Hawk.

P.S. My first bird of the year was a female Flicker. She loves her suet.
