Hi All - 

The winter finch prediction for eastern North America is on birdchat - 
try
the link below (although it will drop off the archive eventually). 
However,
I don't think this prediction works very well for western North America 
as
many of the birds mentioned are presumed to be coming from the eastern
Canada. There is no doubt that some of the finches wander widely 
east/west
in Canada and some species (e.g. redpolls) may show large scale 
movements
across the continent. However, many of the species mentioned are also
resident in northern Rockies (e.g. Pine Siskin, Evening Grosbeak, Pine
Grosbeak, Red Crossbill) so will be greatly affected by local 
conditions.
Often finch movements are not correlated across the continent which is
eveident from reading the winter season report in North American Birds 
or
the Christmas Bird Count analysis.
