Regarding the Jensen Mystery Bird:
My first thought was either female or non-breeding Scarlet or Summer 
Tanager.  A little hard to tell the beak size with the pixelation, but 
if it is longish like a grackle bill, then that would favor the Summer 
Tanager.  I had a bright red Summer Tanager in my yard in Holladay, 
Utah, in August 2003, so they occasionally get this far north.
