Response to Kristin's Appeal - backyard bird sighting - Bullock's Orioles

Don't know if this counts as a sighting, Kristin, but a Bullock's Oriole couple have been visiting our backyard (immediately north of Northridge HS in Layton).

I first saw the male a couple weeks ago, then noticed that orange halves I had put out were being chiseled out and hoped he had been visiting. We also have magpies and starlings, so one never knows. One day I spotted the female eating at the orange, so I pulled out an oriole feeder (bought last year when I caught a glimpse of a male in the trees - but it went ignored that season) and filled it with hummingbird water, grape jelly, and half an orange. No activity. I was bummed, thinking it would be a repeat of last summer.

But then today, I saw the female taking tufts of cat hair I had put out in a small bag, so maybe she is building a nest somewhere in the vicinity (she goes off to the west, but I couldn't discern how far or where). I then put out some grapes that are almost past their prime, thinking that if the orioles like grape jelly, surely they will love the real thing. Later, I watched as both male and female came to feed -- he on the orange and she on the grapes.

Yup, I was excited!

Birders,

Please consider reporting your sightings more frequently on
birdtalk/birdnet. I'm amazed that during what's possibly the best time
of year to bird, so few reports come across the listservs. You don't
have to be a blabbermouth like me to report what you're seeing--a simple
list that includes what, where, when and how to get back there, if
appropriate, would fill the needs of most people.

I learn a lot from what others report and I'm particularly interested in
the range, distribution, and habitat of Utah birds. So please help me
learn! Thanks.

Kris
