Red-tailed Hawks Nesting at SLC Cemetery
I wrote awhile ago about having missing the nesting hawks at the Salt
Lake City Cemetery. For a number of years we watched them nesting each
spring, high in a tree. We'd watch the mama sitting on her nest, then
as weeks slipped by we'd watch both of the parents feeding small
animals to the babies (that was not my favorite part of the
experience), then we'd watch the babies begin to venture out of the
nest on onto branches, and then eventually they'd leave the nest
altogether, and the cycle would repeat the following year. The last
couple of years the nest has gone empty.
Today we saw a hawk nesting there again. There's a new nest a few yards
above the old nest. It's at the very top of a very tall tree. We saw a
single hawk circling above the nest earlier in the day, and then late
in the day we saw the female sitting down in the nest, her head barely
visible.
I am so glad we've got nesting hawks back. I look forward to watching
the cycle this year, and hopefully for years to come.
