Regarding the mosquitoes at Bear River Bird Refuge I would like to impart
the following information for your edification:
Those flying pests are actually harmless - just annoying and won't hurt you
unless you swallow a whole lot of them.
MIDGES: Family Chironomidae. Midges are very common insects, found almost
everywhere and often in considerable numbers. Larvae of most species are
aquatic, and many live in tubes constructed of debris; some larvae are red.
Adults are generally soft-bodied, with long legs and antennae and a short
proboscis; they do not bite. Midges frequently occur in large swarms, particularly
near ponds and lakes.
A Field Guide ot Insects, Borror & White, Page 268.
P.S. Do not confuse these Midges with those awful "no seeum" things at
Antelope Island which do bite - a lot!
