I think what I'm really asking is this:
Should we buy a normal digital camera made for taking family camping trips and
wait to purchase a high-end digital camera with all the lenses, etc., when we're
rich and famous (or rich...)? Or is there a happy medium that I don't know
about because I really don't understand cameras well enough?
