Hi all,
On Sunday, Jill and I went looking for Reinhard's
Bohemians and Stephen and Reinhard's Long-eared Owls, but of course we found
neither. However, near Cutler Marsh we did have a couple of good
finds. We hound a Northern Goshawk in the same tree we saw one around the
same time last year and on the south side of Rt. 30/200 North just east of the
boat launch area, we saw our first ever Northern Shrike. It's our first
ever, even though we were present at a bird club outing in Ithaca, New York,
when one was seen. Jill and I, nor anyone else except the leader saw the
bird.
We're certain that the shrike was a Northern, as his tail
was VERY long, even though there is some confusion with the range maps in some
of the field guides. Sibley says that Loggerheads are present in the Logan
area year round, while Kaufman and others say that they are only here in the
summer. When I saw him, I knew it was a bird I'd never seen
before.
I also had a Brewer's Blackbird on Rt. 91 on the way home
from Lewiston on Tuesday.
Good birding,
Richard
